What is a Digital Portfolio?
Digital Portfolio - student work is created and kept on some form of
electronic media such as writing samples created in Word, Publisher,
etc. then stored on a floppy disc, CD, hard drive, server, or webpage.
They are evidence of what a student has done and can do.
Technology Standards
By using digital portfolios in the classroom teachers and students are
meeting the ISTE standards for technology. (Teacher's standards - I
A; II A, B, E; III A, B, C; IV C; V C; VI B, E. Student's standards - 3-
4; 3-5; 4-7; 5-4; 5-5; 5-7)
How to get started
To create a portfolio entry, pick a topic that lends itself to writing.
Along with a written report, pictures, graphs, or drawings can be
inserted into digital portfolios. Reflection on what the project meant to
the student or what the student learned is a must.
Try new things!
Be creative!
Your students will love you for it.
Importance of Digital Portfolios
Portfolios of any kind allow for personal growth. Students begin taking
responsibility for their own education and teachers become facilitators.
Digital portfolios can follow students from one grade to the next with
ease. A floppy disc or CD may contain several portfolios which are
then passed along to the next year's teachers. Students may then
expand on the work already completed and therefore create a record
of their education.
Why create Digital Portfolios?
The digital portfolio allows students to adjust the portfolio to meet
specific demands. While most or all work may be created and placed
in a working portfolio, only the best pieces or precise types are placed
in the displayed portfolio. Since the portfolio is digital, it can be
changed as needed with very little work. A student simply changes
the links or contents within the displayed portfolio instead of having to
create a totally new one.
