Different File Formats (12)
• .BMP (Bitmap)
• .GIF (Graphic Interchange Format
• .JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group)
• .PSD (Photoshop)
• .PSE (Photo Project Format)
• .PDF (Printable Document Format)
• .PXR (Pixar)
• .PNG (Portable Network Graphics)
• .RAW (Photoshop Raw)
• .SCT (Scitex CT)
• .TGA (Targa)
• .TIFF (Tagged Image File Format)
Terminology you need to know:
• File Extension: is the suffix at the end of a
filename that indicates what type of file it is.
   Example: pryor.jpeg
• Lossy: file compression that results in lost data
and quality from the original version.
• Lossless: compression that reduces a file's size
  with no loss of quality.
• Raster Images: An image made up of a grid of
pixels, The larger the image, the more disk space
the image file will take up.
Bitmap = .BMP
• A Rater Image
• Format for saving image files
• Lossless Format (no compression)
• Stores color for each pixel which results in large
  file sizes.
• Crisp, High quality image
• A standard Windows image format.
Graphic Interchange Format = .GIF
• Format for saving image files and can be
  animated!
• Lossy (compressed file format)
• can be quickly transmitted over a network or the
Internet, which is why you often see them on
  Web pages.
• great for small icons and animated images
• Lack the color range needed for high quality
  images
• Used for Indexed Color Mode
Joint Photographic Experts Group =
.JPEG
• One of the most common image file formats.
• Lossy
• Used for RGB and Grayscale color modes
• Degree of lossness is selectable- for higher
quality and larger files or lower quality and
  smaller files.
• best for compressing photographic images
• if you see a large, colorful image on the Web, it is
  most likely a JPEG file.
Photoshop = .PSD
• Non-compressed image file that can contain
  layers (not a flattened image).
• Supports all color modes
• Image file created by Adobe Photoshop, a
  professional image-editing program
• Lossless
• You need Adobe Photoshop to open a file in this
  format.
Photo Project Format = .PSE
• The standard Photoshop Elements Project file.
• Lossless
• Supports RGB, Bitmap, Grayscale and Indexed
  color modes.
• You need Adobe Photoshop Elements to open
  this file format.
Printable Document Format = .PDF
• captures document text, fonts, images, and even
formatting of documents from a variety of
  applications
• You can e-mail a PDF document to your friend
and it will look the same way on his screen as it
looks on yours, even if he has a Mac and you
  have a PC
• Uses Adobe Acrobat Reader (Free Program) to
  open
Pixar = .PXR
• Used for exchanging files with Pixar image
  computers.
• Used for high-end graphics applications, usually
  three dimensional images and animation.
• Supports RGB and Grayscale color modes
• Can be lossy or lossless depending on how you
  save it.
Portable Network Graphics = .PNG
• designed as an alternative to the GIF format
• Lossless image format
• typically compress about 5% to 25% better than
  GIF files
• Do not support animation like .GIF files do
• Preserves transparency in RGB and Grayscale
  color modes.
Photoshop Raw = .RAW
• Used for transferring images between
applications and computer platforms when other
  formats don’t work.
• a collection of unprocessed data.
▫ This means the file has not been altered,
compressed, or manipulated in any way by the
   computer
Scitex CT = .SCT
• Supports Grayscale or CMYK color modes
• Uncompressed (lossless)
• Used in prepress industries
▫ Prepress: term used in the printing and publishing
industries for the processes and procedures that
occur between the creation of a print layout and
   the final printing
Targa = .TGA
• Raster graphic image
• Supports RGB color mode
• Used for systems using the Truevision Video
  Board now acquired by Avid.
• Used with video games
• Can by Lossy or Lossless
Tagged Image File Format = .TIFF
