Progress in English (PIE) End of Key Stage 2 indicators

Using the tables and charts

The four worksheets labelled PIE 7 up to PIE 10 give estimates of the end of Key Stage 2 English levels
based on standardised scores for Progress in English 7 to Progress in English10.
To use the table for a particular pupil, you should find the appropriate score band in the first column
within which the pupil’s score lies. You should then read off the percentages in the adjacent columns
along the same row. The middle four columns give an indication of the likelihood of achieving each KS2
test level. The last column gives an indication of the level the pupil is most likely to obtain, based on the
probabilities of obtaining each level.

The worksheet labelled PIE11 is for Progress in English 11.
The Progress in English teacher guides give estimates of the current English curriculum level based on the raw sc
As Progress in English 11 tests are normally administered within a few months of the national KS2 English tests,
these estimates are a good guide to the eventual outcome.

Setting targets
Targets are more than forecasts, since targets should also include an element of challenge. Your wide
and detailed knowledge of each individual pupil, and your class/school aspirations in relation to the
benchmark tables will contribute to translating these forecasts into challenging yet achievable targets.

Updating the indicators
These indicators are likely to be updated as we gather new information . Therefore please check our
website for any new updates.

Estimates of end of KS2 English levels from Progress in English 11 (2nd Edition) scores

The Progress in English teacher guides give estimates of the current English curriculum level based on the raw scores.
These are sufficient if you are testing within a few months prior to the national KS2 English tests.

You can use these estimates (shown below) as a guide to the end of KS2 English level if you use Progress in English 11
in the spring or summer terms in Year 6 in England & Wales or in Year 7 in Northern Ireland.
If you use Progress in English 11 early in the spring term and you expect to prepare
pupils intensively in the national KS2 English tests then set the next higher indicated level. For example, if you test in January, a pupil
with a raw score of 25 (shortform) normally indicates reading level 4b but with extra preparation it is likely the pupil will achieve level 4a
by the time of the national tests in May.
