SPIRITUAL GROWTH MINISTRIES
2011 PROGRAMME
This programme outlines retreats and other events which individuals may find of benefit in their
spiritual journey. However Spiritual Growth Ministries Trust does not give warranty as to the
suitability of a particular event for a particular individual. Each individual considering attending
an event is responsible to make their own judgement as to whether the event will be suitable for
them. Views, teaching or statements at the events are not necessarily those of either Spiritual
Growth Ministries Workgroup or Spiritual Growth Ministries Trust.
SPIRITUAL GROWTH MINISTRIES
Spiritual Growth Ministries is a network of people from diverse Christian traditions and experience
who find depth and meaning through the Christian heritage of contemplative spirituality. The
Spiritual Growth Ministries Trust aims to enable people to develop spiritual resources for their
life and work by deepening their relationship with God in Jesus Christ through spiritual direction,
training, retreats and other experiences of prayer.

2. The Spiritual Directors’ Formation Programme is funded from fees and gifts, and SGM
seeks continued support both in prayer and financial assistance for this work.
3. The Spiritual Growth Ministries Trust has been established in order to secure the future
work of SGM. Financial gifts to the Trust are welcome and should be made to the
Administrator.
4. Friends of SGM contribute annually to our work. Some prefer to make a regular
commitment with an automatic payment to the SGM Bank Account. If you would like to
give in this way, write to the Administrator for details.
5. Update your will to include a bequest to Spiritual Growth Ministries Trust.
6. Be on our Mailing List. Send your name and address to The Administrator.

SGM JOURNAL
The SGM Journal, Refresh, is produced twice a year around a particular theme of
contemplative spirituality. The Journal is available from the Administrator.
No charge is made for the Journal but a donation towards the cost of approximately $5 per copy
posted would be appreciated.
The normal Summer issue of Refresh has been replaced this year by a newsletter from
Workgroup members. This has allowed us space for a good process as we’ve looked for a new
editor for Refresh. We are pleased to welcome Diane Gilliam-Weeks to that role and appreciate
the energy, skills and enthusiasm she brings to it. We look forward to mailing her first issue to
you in November/December 2011 with the 2012 Programme.
FORMATION PROGRAMME FOR SPIRITUAL DIRECTORS
SGM’s two year programme offers comprehensive formation and training in both the theory and
practice of spiritual direction. The course includes

• a week-long residential event in the first year, and
• a residential weekend at the end of the second year
This programme prepares graduates to apply for associate membership of the Association of
Christian Spiritual Directors in Aotearoa New Zealand (ACSD). After completing a further fifty
hours of giving spiritual direction with regular supervision, associate members may then apply
for full membership.
Formation Programme applicants are expected to have
• experience of receiving regular spiritual direction over at least twelve months
• experience of making silent, directed retreats
• a degree of maturity based on life and faith experience

2011 PROGRAMME
SPIRITUAL DIRECTION
Spiritual direction offers quality listening and assistance in hearing God’s voice, reflecting on
the journey and facing into the movements of grace in our lives.
The Association of Christian Spiritual Directors (ACSD) in Aotearoa New Zealand has
members in most parts of the country.
Contact Carole Hunt the SGM Administrator who will be able to help with contacts in your
area. sgm@clear.net.nz (04) 234 1992, or visit the ACSD website www.acsd.org.nz
RETREATS
While the term “retreat” is sometimes loosely used to include conferences, church camps
or business strategy and team-building events, none of those is what we mean by the term!
A retreat is a time set aside to be with God. It is a time to lay aside our agenda and many of
the normal things that fill our lives and our minds, and to focus more completely on God’s
agenda for us. It is a time to hear God’s word of love. It is a time to experience forgiveness and
cleansing. It is a time to hear the Lord’s call and to sort out our priorities. It is a time for healing
and challenge. It’s a time to journey further in “the way”.
E-RETREATS WITH E-MERGING MYSTICS!
1. The art of Inspiration
Prayer through the eyes of Leunig and Lamott
Six consecutive Mondays from the 2nd May
2. The art of Perspiration
Prayer through the eyes of May and Moore
Six consecutive Mondays from the 5th September
If you live in a place where retreats are hard to find or have a busy life that doesn’t currently
enable you to go on retreat then e- retreats may be for you. You will receive a weekly Email
with a short passage from one of the writers as well as a suggestion for how to practice that
reflection during the week. Then there is the option to gather in an online blog or retreatant
group to share your experiences and responses to the reading. These e-retreats are stand-alone
and they will complement each other.
Cost: $35 for each retreat or $60 for both.

Apr 30 SACRED RHYTHMS OF THE DAY - Weekend Retreat (Wheelchair access)
- May 1 For centuries, monastic communities have organised their lives around the Liturgy
of the Hours -regular prayer at set times of the day. For those of us outside the
monastery it can be more difficult to establish and maintain this sense of sacred
rhythm. You are welcome to join us for a time of creative discovery in the
beautiful surroundings of Vaughan Park. Using poetry and the monastic Hours as a
framework, we will find ways to create contemplative spaces in our lives. The
emphasis will be on the ‘presence’ of the hours, rather than traditional texts. There
will be time and space to reflect and write, and to create your own tiny Book of
Hours. Please bring writing materials – pen and paper or journal.

2011 PROGRAMME
Jun 25 INTRODUCTION TO CENTERING PRAYER (Wheelchair access)
Centering Prayer is a form of Meditation in the Christian contemplative tradition
that trains the heart, mind and soul to open to the Life of Spirit. Through silence

and opens us to compassion and inner knowing. This workshop is based on the
teaching of Fr Thomas Keating and Rev Cynthia Bourgeault.
