1) AP Geology Info
Lee Jones of the College Board informed us that there has
been a delay in
getting the AP Geology survey on line, but that it will
happen soon. We'll let you know as soon as
we know.
We attended the GSA meeting in Reno to further the AP Geology
cause, and we appreciate your
continued support and interest. PLEASE keep spreading the
word (and forwarding these
messages) and urging your colleagues, chairs, principals,
etc. to log onto our site and support our
efforts. This is going to happen, folks!

2) Role Models needed for Techbridge: Encouraging Girls in
Technology
What do girls imagine when they think of computers and
technology? A career
with exciting possibilities to which they could aspire or one
that is "geeky"
and holds little appeal?
With a grant from the National Science Foundation, the Chabot
Space & Science
Center is developing an innovative program to inspire girls
in technology.
Techbridge is a three-year program that encourage girls to
pursue academic and career options in
technology and will contribute much needed research regarding
gender, culture, and technology.
Techbridge comes at a critical time in girls' development,
supporting the transition from middle
school to high school. Participating schools include Edna
Brewer, Frick, Bret Harte, Montera,
John Swett, Calvin Simmons, Fremont, McClymonds, Oakland
Technical,
and Skyline.
Program elements include:
~ Project-based learning that introduces girls to technology
under conditions
most likely to hold their interests
~ Summer programs at CSSC that offer girls a chance to
follow-up on
technology projects and learn new applications
~ Counseling about career options in technology
~ Role models to give girls a realistic sense of
opportunities in technology
~ Professional development to support teachers, counselors,
role models, and
parents
~ Family events that offer resources and tips for encouraging
girls in
technology
~ Research study of how gender and culture influence girls'
involvement in
technology and how best to serve varied groups of girls and
their families
CSSC's partners in this project include Oakland Unified
School District,
California State University, Hayward, Mills College, Lawrence
Livermore National Laboratory,
Autodesk, Compaq, Microsoft, NEC, and Community Resources for
Science.
Would you like to share your passion and experience working
with technology with girls? We are
looking for role models to visit our before and after-school
programs at middle schools and high
schools in Oakland and to share their personal journeys in
technology with girls. We also need
help in facilitating field trips to work sites and sharing
the opportunities available in the
technology field with teachers, counselors, students, and
families. Community Resources for
Science, an educational nonprofit, will provide training and
resources to help you develop an
interactive lesson that is educational and meaningful to
girls.

3) Women's Appointments Project underway
The National Women's Political Caucus (NWPC) and the National
Council of Women's
Organizations (NCWO), with support from the Barbara Lee
Family Foundation, have organized
the Women's Appointments Project to provide the White House
transition team with names of
capable women to fill posts at all levels and encourage the
appointment of women. This project
has provided recommendations since 1976, and a fact sheet on
the progress on women's
appointments is available at
http://www.womensenews.org/article.cfm?aid=331&mode=today.
Committees include Science, Technology, Transportation,
Aviation, Maritime, NASA, NSF (co-
chaired by Catherine Jay Didion); Environment, Energy,
Interior, Historic Preservation, NRC,
Agriculture; and Health and Human Resources. For a summary
and a link to the project homepage
(to appear later), see
http://www.womensenews.org/article.cfm?aid=332&mode=today.
In addition, a recent publication by the National Academies
identifies obstacles in the appointment
process and makes recommendations which might help attract
more candidates for science and
technology appointments. The publication is available at
http://www4.nationalacademies.org/pd/presappt.nsf with the
findings and recommendations at
http://books.nap.edu/html/presidential_appointments/pres_app_
bklt.pdf.
A listing of federal jobs needing appointees is provided in
the United States
Government Policy and Supporting Positions book (AKA the Plum
Book)available from the
Office of Personnel Management at
http://www.opm.gov/PlumBook/index.htm.

the world.
The scope of the coming event has been significantly expanded
with the
addition of a three-day conference to explore current
developmental, technical, economic and
political issues and opportunities in international mining,
exploration and minerals processing.
Speakers at the three-day conference will include Hugh
Morgan, CEO of WMC Resources, Shaun
Stewart, international and government affairs advisor to Rio
Tinto plc, and Dr Ray Durrheim,

networking and
one-to-one discussions, with private meeting facilities
available for small
groups and individuals.
Optional visits are available to major mines and exploration
areas of
Western Australia, one of the world's most productive mining
and minerals
exporting regions. These include pre and post-conference
tours to Australia's gold mining capital
Kalgoorlie to see the Superpit, one of the world's biggest
open pit mines. Delegates can also visit
the Boddington Gold Mine, a major producer located in an
environmentally sensitive area
