New Breed Season Three Episode Twenty-Two – ‘Moving On’ By Blair Robertson NARRATOR (VO) Previously on New Breed… FADE IN: INT. ATRIUM – AVOLON ENTERPRISES – DAY Zev runs across the destroyed white atrium. He skids to a stop as Arcathia appears before him, scowling angrily. ARCATHIA Where are the witches? Tell me! ZEV Go to hell. Bitch. Suddenly, a swirl of red light spirals around her. Her eyes widen as she shakes her head. ARCATHIA (panicking) No! I won’t go back! NOOOO! The gang watch as the red light consumes Arcathia. Her horrified scream echoes across the room as the commandos slow down in shock. Arcathia’s taken away, the light fading. SMASH TO: EXT. REDINGSTON BEACH – EVENING Zev stands alone at the edge of the water, arms folded, opposite the ten Council members standing in a circle within the water. ZEV I thought you’d like to know, your priestess is dead. For good this time. LEVIA The great Arcathia? Dead? SMASH TO: INT. ATRIUM – AVOLON ENTERPRISES – DAY The middle-aged, slick-haired Jeff Nichols steps out of an elevator. He looks around with a smug smile, lifting up a cell phone. We close in on his ageing face. JEFF NICHOLS It’s done. We’ve located the chip-control-unit on the eleventh floor. Finish off the final factory and send the team. We’ll need a good story for this one SMASH TO: INT. DINING ROOM – WALKER RESIDENCE – DAY Jane, Ken and Zev sit opposite Jeff Nichols and Jessica Watts. JANE (angrily) No. Hold on one minute. Since when do the Messengers make propositions? You stop evil! You don’t go around giving ultimatums. If he does what you want, you’ll clean something else up! How dare you- JEFF NICHOLS (loudly) May I remind you of your rank Miss. VanStar! JANE It’s Mrs. VanStar-Rosenberg! And I know my rank. And I know yours. And I know that the purpose of the Messengers is to aid and guide the Defenders of the world. You should be doing what Zev asks of you! Not threatening to not do something if he doesn’t comply with your requests! SMASH TO: INT. BEACH ARCADE – DAY Rick, Lucy, Sammy and Ben sit on tall stools around a table in the café area. LUCY Since I became depressed, my mom’s tried everything to help. She says the only thing left is to start a new life. Get away from this town. RICK You can’t move Lucy. I’ve just managed to accept the fact that we can stay friends. Now I’ll be losing you all together? LUCY Not everything revolves around you Rick. This fresh start could be what I need, so try and support this ok? SMASH TO: EXT. REDINGSTON BEACH – NIGHT Vicki and Zev sit on a rock by the edge of the beach, the woods behind them. They kiss passionately, cradling each other, the full moon shining down romantically. SMASH TO: INT. HALLWAY – KEN’S APARTMENT – DAY Zev, Sammy and Rick manoeuvre through the cardboard boxes. RICK So. We haven’t caught up since the prom. SAMMY Yeah, you never told us what went on with you and Vicki. She left too early the next morning. ZEV (slyly) What happened is between us. It was a pretty magical night. SMASH TO: INT. PATIENT ROOM – REDINGSTON HOSPITAL – MORNING In the familiar white room, Sammy lays in bed with Ashley, Ben, Ken, Rick and Zev standing before her. KEN Jane’s sorry she couldn’t visit. She’s been called to an emergency meeting with the Messengers. (flash cut) We now have a day or so to relax before Graduation. SLAM TO BLACK. ------------------------ Teaser: FADE IN: EXT. REDINGSTON MAIN CEMETERY – NIGHT Like the very first scene of this season, rows upon rows of headstones fill the screen. The moon lights up the short grass, the tall, swaying trees and hedging/shrubs. A gravel path cuts through the cemetery, mini-streetlamps lighting the path up. A tall, wild Venues demon (rotting zombie-skin with tufts of fur dotted about, red glowing eyes, fangs, drool etc) roars loudly as it stumbles across the path. Zev charges into frame, jumping up and spinning through the air, delivering a flying sidekick to the demon’s head. The Venues falls backwards, rolling across the grass and smashing through a headstone. Zev moves towards the Venues as it stands slowly. ZEV You know, this is a great fight. The Venues swings a right paw. Zev catches its arm and kicks up into the demon’s gut. The Venues bends over slightly, snarling loudly. ZEV Recently all my fights have been against hard ass demonic elders. You know, the Council. Also, there are these genetically engineered soldiers- Zev throws the demon’s arm to the side before swinging a left hook punch into the Venues demon’s jaw. He follows it through with a right hook punch. Zev spins around, hook kicking the demon across the jaw. The Venues crashes through another headstone, rolling along the grass as Zev follows slowly. ZEV -who could throw these spiky ball things and use telekinesis. The Venues goes to sit up but Zev snaps his foot out, blasting the Venues demon in the face. It falls back down as Zev pulls open his dark coat, pulling out the sleek and shiny Silver Blade. ZEV Before I kill you, I just wanted you to know that you’re a pretty pleasant demon to fight. The Venues opens its snout to reply but Zev hurls the Blade down into its throat. The Venues’ eyes fade as green blood oozes out of the neck-wound. Zev bends down, ripping out the Blade as the body starts to rot & decompose. Zev wipes the Blade on the grass before turning and walking away. He whistles to himself, tucking the Blade inside his jacket. By the decomposing Venues demon, a swirl of black shadows appears. In her flowing black robes with red hems, gaunt/sunken cheeks, heavy-bags under her beady eyes and thin, wiry blond hair, Levia scowls at Zev as he walks away. In her husky voice; LEVIA You’ll pay for what you’ve done Defender. My Priestess’ death will be avenged and sooner than the Council have planned. Levia smirks slyly to herself before teleporting away with her black shadows. CUT TO: INT. KEN’S CAR – MORNING Ken yawns loudly, behind the wheel, wearing a fresh white shirt & black trousers. He slows down, pulling up near Zev’s house. Zev sits beside him, still in his dark coat & clothes from the night before. ZEV Thanks for the ride. KEN No problem. Remember. You stayed at Rick’s. ZEV Well. You look a little old to be Rick. KEN (sourly) Thanks. Now get out. Zev smirks, opening the door and climbing out. Zev slams the door shut, walking past the hood of the car. KEN (mumbling) Old. Phhhf. CUT TO: EXT. WALKER RESIDENCE – MORNING Zev moves up the drive alongside David’s black Mercedes. His eyes fall past his front yard, the row of hedging on the left and over it to a large, white moving van parked in the neighbour’s drive. He frowns, heading for the porch, his eyes on the van. SUE (OS) I’m glad you’re home honey! Zev whips his head up to the front door. Sue stands by the open door, holding a small wicker basket filled with various muffins, bagels etc. She wears a prim, flowery dress coming down to her knees, her hair neatly straightened to her shoulders and wearing sleek beige high heels. ZEV (in awe) Oh my god. You look like a dream housewife. What happened? SUE I am a dream housewife. We have new neighbours and I thought it’d be nice of us to greet them. First. Before anyone else. DAVID (OS) Competition time huh Sue? David appears in a maroon shirt and black trousers, hands casually in his pockets. SUE Take your hands out of your pockets, smile and be polite, got it? Sue grits her teeth as she smiles, heading down the porch and across the stepping-stones on the yard. Zev sighs, as he and David follow her. CUT TO: EXT. CURTIS RESIDENCE – MORNING Sue strides alongside the removal van, where two overweight guys in sweaty blue uniforms unload a large peach sofa off the back of the van. David and Zev trail behind. Zev stares at the wooden porch, the open green front door and the curtain-less windows. A slim woman in her thirties steps out, with fiery eyes and bouncy blond/gingery hair coming down to her shoulders. She sports a white blouse with dark trousers, smiling happily at the approaching Walker’s. LAURA CURTIS Hi. Laura Curtis, new neighbour. SUE Hi. Sue Walker. Old neighbour. Laura grins, stepping down the porch. The women shake hands as Sue holds out the gift basket. SUE I thought you might like these. I’ve had them ever since a neighbour welcomed me to the street. LAURA What? SUE Just kidding! Laura grins, embarrassed for falling for the lame joke as Sue gestures to David and Zev. SUE My husband, David and my son Zev. ZEV Hi. LAURA Hello Zev. In High School I take it? ZEV Graduating tomorrow. LAURA (impressed) Wow. Congratulations. ZEV Thanks. DAVID So, is there a Mr. Curtis? Someone I can share my booze supply with? LAURA Unfortunately no. I’m a divorced woman David. Why? Are you up for grabs? You wouldn’t mind would you Sue? Laura grins as David laughs. Sue’s smile drops as she clears her throat. SUE (quickly) If you need anything or need any help with getting to know the town, give us a call, ok? LAURA Oh, don’t worry. I will. Thanks for dropping by. Laura nods with a sly smile. Her eyes fall onto Zev. LAURA Bye Zev. Zev turns with Sue and David, following them back down the drive as the removal men move by with the sofa. Laura watches Zev curiously, folding her arms. Zev looks over his shoulder to look back at Laura, but she’s now looking at the removal men. FADE OUT. *CREDITS* THEME TUNE: ‘Smack My Bitch Up’ by The Prodigy. REDINGSTON BEACH – DAY On the sunny, busy beach, a host of people lounge about on towels. Guys & girls play volleyball, kids play in the calm ocean and jet skiers whiz across the ocean’s surface further out. Ben, Ashley, Rick and Lucy lay back relaxingly on large towels. The girls wear bright coloured bikinis whilst the guys wear swimming trunks (shorts if you don’t have the word trunks in America!). RICK This is the life. LUCY Uh huh. ASHLEY We don’t do this enough. BEN I just wish Sammy was here. SAMMY (OS) I am, duh. The others all sit up immediately, looking round to see Sammy in hot pants and a white shirt, brown hair billowing down. She leans onto two crutches. The bulge of bandages under her shirt is visible as Zev steps up by her side in blue shorts & t-shirt. ZEV Hey guys. ASHLEY Hey. What’s with the hobbling band aid storage? SAMMY Oh, haha. That’s not a good one. RICK (sulkily) That was my joke! BEN It’s still lame. Ben jumps up, moving up to Sammy, helping her along. SAMMY Hey, hey, hey. Watch it. I’m able to walk by myself. LUCY See. You guys are just too helpful sometimes. ASHLEY Since when is that a bad thing? SAMMY (to Ben) It’s ok sweetie. I’ll just stand and admire the sun from up here. Rick looks up to Zev. RICK Up for the party after Graduation tomorrow night? ZEV Definitely. ASHLEY You’ll never… actually, you probably will. Guess who’s coming to Graduation Day. A certain blond girl who you had a mystery night with after prom. SAMMY Oh, well now. Maybe she can spill the beans. ZEV No. She won’t. We both decided to keep that night between us. RICK Come on man, that’s so unfair! Can’t you at least tell me? I’m your best friend and I’m also a guy. We share the dirty deeds we do with girls. ZEV There were no dirty deeds and Sammy already tried the best friend card. Sammy sheepishly grins as Rick shoots her a scowl. BEN So. How’d the demon hunting go last night? ZEV Fine. I killed a Venues demon. Nice and simple. No spike balls or telekinesis. Just hand-to-hand. ASHLEY One thing I won’t miss about this town is demons. ZEV (thrown) What? ASHLEY Well, I’ll be touring Europe, remember? ZEV Oh right. SAMMY And she’ll be going to Harvard, remember? Zev coughs loudly, looking shocked as Rick, Ben and Lucy frown. ZEV You will? RICK I second that statement. You will? ASHLEY Uh! I swear you guys never listen! Now I just have to find a way of telling Jamie. SAMMY I’m sure he’ll handle it ok. Ashley nods sadly at Sammy. Zev and Rick exchange glances. ASHLEY I hope so. LUCY Looks like the gang’s going to be two down. Ashley’s leaving for college and I’ll be moving to do my senior year. RICK (slowly) So your mom is going ahead with the move? LUCY I’ll keep in touch. Maybe an email every few months. RICK (solemnly) Ha. Ha. Rick looks visibly hurt, lowering his head as Lucy tries not to acknowledge it. Ashley puts on a smile. ASHLEY Well. We should make the next few days as enjoyable as possible. BEN Here, here. SAMMY We could do Crazy World… well, you guys could. I can stand about and hold bags and coats and stuff. BEN (smirking) Deal. Sammy mock-scowls at Ben as Zev looks out to the ocean. ZEV Well. Whatever we do, let’s make the most of it before everything in our lives change- Zev cuts off with a frown, clutching at his chest. He exhales slowly as the others look at him. LUCY Zev? RICK You ok? SAMMY You look a little red. ZEV (slowly) Just had this really tight feeling in my chest… really tight. BEN Want me to go get you some water? ASHLEY I can go- ZEV (quickly) No. It’s ok. It’s gone now. Odd. Zev shrugs it off as the others turn back to each other to talk. We close in on Zev’s face, slightly concerned. CUT TO: EXT. ROSENBERG RESIDENCE – DAY In an idyllic little street with old-fashioned lamps, trees dotted along the sidewalk and suburban homes with typical driveways and mowed front lawns; Ken’s new, peach coloured two-storey house with a neat yard & white picket fence comes into frame. Ken’s silver car sits in the drive on the right. CUT TO: INT. FRONT ROOM – ROSENBERG RESIDENCE – DAY It’s a rectangular room with white walls, a large bay window that overlooks the front lawn, wooden flooring and Ken’s two brown leather sofas against the right wall. Opposite the sofas, sits the TV. A bookcase and a table end with a vase filled with flowers stand near the TV. The room’s pretty bare. Ken stands by the bay window, looking out at the street he now lives on. Jane appears through the double glass doors at the back of the room, from the kitchen, wearing a summery skirt & top. JANE Hey. Getting used to the new scenery? KEN It’s still shocking. We own a house. A house. Two storeys. Two bathrooms. God, three bedrooms. Jane smirks, moving up behind Ken and wrapping her arms around his waist. She leans her head into his back. He takes hold of her hands by his front. JANE This is where our new life starts. KEN It sure does. So I guess we’ll have to give the Messengers our new number. JANE Definitely. They want to see me again this afternoon in town. I just got off the phone to Tonnon. The Defender in England has been murdered. KEN (frowning) A Defender died? JANE Yeah. About an hour ago. Died in battle against a Dark Being. KEN Oh my god. Paul must be devastated… is he staying on to train whoever the new Defender will be? JANE No. That’s why I’m needed. They want my advice on which Mentor would best be suited for the new Defender. I’m meeting that asshole consultant, Jeff Nichols. KEN Huh. Is he still badgering you about that promotion they offered you? Because you bought Sammy some really nice flowers and didn’t even get the chance to give them to her. JANE It doesn’t matter. I said no. (then) I’m going to call the decorators in a minute, see if we can sort the bedroom out with a new design. KEN (slowly) Ok. Good. You do that. I’ll finish preparing Zev’s summer training. JANE Remember to work him hard. KEN Don’t worry. Learning the full concepts of Maui Tai and advanced weaponry training in three months will be the hardest battle he’s faced yet. JANE Good luck to him. Jane drops her arms and walks off. She turns left and heads through a glass door that sits between the TV & bookcase. CUT TO: INT. ICE CREAM PARLOUR – DAY In a small yet busy parlour, we find a group of kids huddled by the tables to the right, people queuing by the glass counter to the left and others walking to and from the glass doors. Sammy and Nancy sit at a table, tubs of ice cream between them. Sammy looks shocked, holding a spoonful of ice cream inches from her mouth. SAMMY Are you serious? NANCY (sadly) I am. It’s a big decision that I’ve had to consider carefully over the last few weeks. SAMMY I’d have to do some major-ass spell to contact you! You’ll be on another plane of existence! NANCY I know it sucks Sammy, but it’s my destiny to help the Higher Beings and help the innocents of our existence. SAMMY (sighing) You could have told me earlier. People seem to think I can’t handle shocking news. Hello! I sent my father into a coma. How’s that for shocking? Sammy throws her spoon down into her tub as Ashley, Zev, Rick, Ben and Lucy walk in through the glass doors, chatting and laughing. NANCY Sammy, please don’t be- Sammy looks up to the other four with her glum expression. Zev raises an eyebrow. ZEV Is something wrong? SAMMY Oh, you know. We’ve got a new fad. Forget the gang being down by two. Make it three. (to Nancy) If I could reach my crutches, I’d bail on you right about now. Nancy looks down guiltily as the others exchange confused glances. Sammy folds her arms sulkily. FADE OUT. End of Act One. Insert Commercials: Meet the faces of New Breed! DINING ROOM – HOWARD RESIDENCE – EVENING Ashley and Jamie sit opposite each other, in the candle-lit room, at the dining table. Jamie shovels down his home cooking whilst Ashley prods her spaghetti with her fork. She looks up at Jamie nervously. Jamie looks up, frowning. JAMIE What’s up? You usually wolf down my food. ASHLEY I uh… there’s something we… I have to tell you something. Something big. JAMIE Ok. Go for it. Jamie puts his fork down, leaning back and clasping his hands together. ASHLEY I just want you to know that… that I’m making this decision for my future. JAMIE (slowly) Are you… are you breaking up with me or something? Ashley looks down, clearing her throat guiltily. Jamie falters to speak, looking dismayed. ASHLEY I love you Jamie. But I can’t stay in this town. I want to escape. Start a new life at college. JAMIE (slowly) This is about going to college? ASHLEY It’s about moving on with my life. After seeing the horrors of the world… after receiving an offer for Harvard, I’ve realised that if I want to become the woman I dream of, then I’m going to have to take this chance and leave this town. JAMIE What about us? What about our relationship? ASHLEY (quietly) I’ll only be gone for four years. JAMIE (coughing) Only four years? Jesus Christ Ashley! I love you. And I cannot stay away from you for four years if we’re still going to be in this relationship. I need you. ASHLEY It’s why I think it’s better if we end it now. That way, it’ll be a clean break so we can both start a fresh life. Meet new people. New friends- JAMIE (sadly) I don’t want a fresh life Ash. I want you. (then) What if I transfer to the local area. We could get an apartment, still see- ASHLEY (quickly) No. As great as that sounds… I really think it’d be better if you stayed here. Zev could use your help. He needs somebody to keep the police at bay and stuff. Jamie looks at Ashley with watering eyes, his lip trembling. JAMIE I can’t believe you’re saying this. ASHLEY (sniffling) I’m so sorry Jamie. Ashley, keeping a stiff upper lip, stands quickly. Her eyes begin to water as she exits the room through an archway quickly. Jamie stares ahead blankly, a tear running down his stubbly cheek. The front door slams shut in the background as Jamie’s mouth opens, a sob/gasp escaping. CUT TO: INT. DINING ROOM – WALKER RESIDENCE – EVENING The sunset casts an orange glow through the kitchen doorway and onto the dining room floor. Zev stands by the large table, setting out places for dinner. Headlights illuminate the front window as Zev frowns, looking up. He turns for the hall as we hear car doors slamming shut. CUT TO: INT. HALLWAY – WALKER RESIDENCE – EVENING Zev steps up to the front door, pulling it open. Stepping into the doorway is the exceptionally perky, 5’3, seventy-one year old Mary Walker. With puffy styled greyish/blond hair, a young looking face & an extremely healthy figure for her age, she smiles brightly, speaking in her Southern accent. MARY WALKER Well, if it isn’t my darling grandson Zev! Give grandma a hug! ZEV (shocked) Grandma. Hey. Mary grabs Zev into a tight hug, smiling happily as somebody else steps into the doorway. With thick grey hair, a chubby build, an energetic face and wearing a chequered shirt and grey trousers, Arnold Walker smiles at his grandson. ZEV Grandpa? ARNOLD WALKER Hey kiddo. Zev pulls back from Mary. Mary smiles. MARY WALKER I told you Grandpa Arnold would make it. ZEV Uh, told me? SUE (OS) She was talking to us. Zev turns as Sue and David walk into frame, greeting Mary and Arnold. DAVID Dad. It’s been a while. ARNOLD WALKER But now I’m here. So. Where’s this new kid of yours? Is she fat? MARY WALKER Arnold! For your information, Kristen is a beautiful baby. ARNOLD WALKER Phhhf. Beautiful. That covers many different looks now a days. David smirks, wrapping an arm around his dad and taking him into the front room. Sue scowls after Arnold as Mary smirks at them both, shutting the door. MARY WALKER Something sure does smell good. When’s dinner? I’m famished! Mary heads off into the dining room as Zev turns to Sue. ZEV No one else is coming, right? SUE Your Aunt Kathy was supposed to be arriving this afternoon with Kayla. I guess they’ve been held up. Zev groans as Sue smirks at him. She turns, heading after Mary. CUT TO: INT. FRONT ROOM – ROSENBERG RESIDENCE – EVENING Ken sits on the sofa in the darkened room. He holds a can of beer in one hand, watching the TV. A door slams from somewhere. Ken turns to the glass door to the left of the TV as Jane slowly walks in, taking off her dark coat. She smiles weakly at Ken, letting her hair down. KEN What’s wrong? What did they say? JANE (quietly) It’s not good Ken. Jane throws her coat onto the sofa. Ken sits up straight and puts his beer aside as Jane sits down next to him. They face each other, Jane on the edge. JANE You know the promotion I turned down. KEN Yeah? JANE It didn’t matter what I had to say. They’re forcing me to move on Ken. Jane’s eyes start to well with tears as Ken frowns, tiling his head. KEN I… I don’t understand. What are you saying? JANE If I don’t comply with their demand, they’ll have me arrested and prosecuted under their Act of Treason. You can’t just pull out of your contract or ignore their orders without severe consequences. You know that as well as I do. Jane lowers her head, wiping a tear on her cheek as Ken’s shocked eyes look down to the floor. After a few silent seconds, Ken looks up to the tearful Jane. KEN They can’t do this. They can’t. I won’t let them. Jane looks up with bleary eyes at Ken, her bottom lip trembling. JANE What else can we do but comply? It’s like any organisation with power. They will enforce their rules and if they’re broken, they will seek retribution. KEN I will not stand idly by whilst you pack a case and leave your husband and new life behind. They can’t just uproot you from a marriage and- JANE In the board’s eyes, we shouldn’t even be married. Jeff Nichols reported us to the board and they can overrule Ben Tonnon’s blessing of our marriage. The damn consultant feels I’ve become too attached to you and the Defender. He thinks it’s blinding my judgement and I’m supposedly endangering all of us. Jane lets out a deep sob as Ken grits his teeth. KEN That shit… Tonnon won’t stand for this. He’ll fight this and we’ll be fine. Don’t worry, ok? (curiously) Where do they want to send you? JANE (sighing) England. KEN (stunned) England?! What for? Can’t you pick a new Mentor for the new Defender from here? JANE (crying) Oh Ken, it’s not about that. It’s about what happened with Jeff Nichols. Because I spoke out of line. But I don’t want to leave you Ken. I don’t want to leave my home. My life. Jane sobs loudly as Ken quickly wraps his arms around her. She cries heavily into his chest as he lets out a whimper He rubs the back of Jane’s head. KEN We’ll be all right. I won’t let them take you. We pull back as they both cry together, holding one another. CUT TO: EXT. BEN’S PICKUP – NIGHT A large blanket covers the back of the pick-up, with Sammy and Ben lying on top. Ben has his arms behind his head, staring up at the sky as Sammy turns to look at him. SAMMY You know… after tomorrow, everything changes. BEN (softly) I know. SAMMY We ascend. To a new level in our lives. And we’ll ascend together, right? Ben turns to look at Sammy, smiling at her. BEN I’d never dream of doing it alone. SAMMY Me either. BEN We’ll take what’s coming next together. As a team. SAMMY As a couple. Ben nods as they both stare deep into each other’s eyes. BEN I love you so much. SAMMY I know. And I love you more than life itself. Ben leans over, kissing Sammy slowly on the lips. She moves her hands to hold his neck fragilely, kissing him harder. We pan up past a group of trees and up to the starry night sky. A shooting star soars past, gone within a blink of the eye. CUT TO: INT. FRONT ROOM – CURTIS RESIDENCE – NIGHT It’s dark. Nothing except for the basic outline of the windows and the door leading in can be made out. A strand of moonlight filters through the window, lighting up Laura Curtis. She stands silently, unbuttoning a long black coat. She pulls it off, dropping it to the side. This reveals a gun in a holster on her side. She unclips the holster, pulling the gun out and setting it down on the window ledge. She sighs to herself, staring out of the window as she flicks back her blond/gingery hair. She pulls up a cell phone, as we hear it ringing on the other line. MALE VOICE (VO) Operator. LAURA CURTIS Curtis, 5-5-4-8-2. MALE VOICE (VO) Identity confirmed. Please hold for transaction. Laura leans forwards, staring harder out of the window. LAURA’S POV: We stare past the hedging in the garden and over to the side of the Walker’s house… CUT TO: EXT. REDINGSTON – MORNING AERIAL shot of the large town; a few tall buildings near the edge of the coast, shorter buildings clumped up nearby, the suburban homes spread out on the outside, the large hill to the left with the spa halfway up and the intricate roads. The morning sun shines down, reflecting off the calm sea as we… CUT TO: INT. DINING ROOM – WALKER RESIDENCE – MORNING Zev sits at the dining table with a white shirt and faded jeans on. He dabs at a bowl of cereal as David enters the room in his usual shirt/trousers. He notices Zev. DAVID Hey. For someone who’s graduation, you look a little down. ZEV (mopey) Trying to accept the fact that today is my last day of high school. Officially. DAVID Come on champ. Life goes beyond High School. David sits down opposite Zev. Zev looks up. ZEV I know. It’s just that high school has been a huge part of my life. I’ve made so many friends that I’m going to miss. Made some enemies too. But I won’t really miss them. DAVID You’ll stay in touch with your friends. Besides, you have your little gang all going with you to Redingston College. Which is a great college… obviously it’s not a Princeton, you know, the college I went to, but it’s still pretty good. ZEV Dad… I’m not changing my mind. Redingston is for me. And no. Not everyone from my little group is going to Redingston. Lucy’s a year below and she’s moving. Nancy’s uh… she’s moving. And Ashley- DAVID Ashley? As in ex-girlfriend Ashley? ZEV (nodding) She’s going to Harvard. DAVID Wow. Good for her. I always thought she looked Harvardy. Zev lowers his head, his voice trembling. ZEV I’m going to miss her so much. Our time together. Our cinema trips. God, even talking to her at school. She’ll be the second girl I loved to leave town. DAVID (sighing) You’ll meet new girls and new friends at college. Trust me. The transition is hard but it’s not the end of the world. Cheer up champ. I want to see you smiling at Graduation. Zev smirks as David stands and walks off. We close in on Zev as the smirk drops. CUT TO: EXT. WILLINS’ RESIDENCE – MORNING On the narrow, wooden porch, Rick stand in front of the closed door in a green/whiter striped polo shirt and jeans. He fiddles with his hands as the door opens. Lucy steps forwards, hair messy and wearing a dressing robe. LUCY Rick? It’s eight thirty! I’m not even showered yet! RICK Look. I know we’re just friends now, but it doesn’t mean that I don’t love you. LUCY Rick- RICK No. Let me say this. I love you Lucy. And somehow, as hard as it may sound coming from me, I think there’s a part in me that will always love you. And I don’t mean below the waistline. Lucy smirks, folding her arms as Rick stares into her eyes. RICK All I wanted to say was good luck with your life. I hope you move somewhere good, you know, demon free. Meet a nice guy, make some cool friends. LUCY Thank you. I mean that. I’ve waited for you to accept that we’re just friends. I’m proud of you Rick. Rick smiles meekly as Lucy steps forwards, hugging him tightly. Rick closes his eyes, holding Lucy. LUCY And just know that there’ll always be a part of my heart that belongs to you. Rick’s smile grows, embracing the moment. CUT TO: EXT. REDINGSTON HIGH – DAY We pull down over the front of the double-storey school. The early morning sun lights up the shrubs, clean windows and brick walls. Zev and Rick stand before the large brick rectangular- archway. They look through to the courtyard. RICK She’ll be coming to graduation. Looks like I’ve actually matured a little this year. (looking up) It’s hard to believe this’ll be our last day here. ZEV Tell me about it. This place… I’m really going to miss it. RICK Ok… It’s gonna be a huge life change, moving on from school, but miss it? Come on. Only the chess club and geeks will miss school. ZEV (slowly) No… I’ll miss it. I actually liked school. It’s given me more than an education. It’s given me friends, experiences and a dislike for meatloaf. Rick turns to Zev with a frown. RICK You’re seriously going to miss this place, aren’t you? ZEV Yep. Tapping and footsteps come from behind them. They turn as Sammy and Ben step up. Sammy leans on her crutches in a stylish black dress. She wears her hair up in some stylish pile (i.e. mess!) as Ben simply wears a t-shirt and jeans. SAMMY Hey. Like the hair? BEN Say yes! It took her an hour to do. SAMMY Did not! Sammy taps Ben with her crutch on the leg before turning to look up at the school. SAMMY So. This is it huh? Our final day at school. Before our intense summer. I’ll be training at Hogwarts whilst you lot brush up your fighting skills. ZEV Looks like. RICK Come on, the other’s will be waiting. BEN Let’s get this over with. Zev looks down sadly as the four move forwards, under the arch. We stay on the front of the school for a few silent seconds, taking it in. CUT TO: INT. AUDITORIUM – REDINGSTON HIGH – DAY We pan around the large sloping auditorium. With rows upon rows of plastic seats running along the large slope, the stage set up and ready with a microphone booth, several chairs and the red curtains neatly drawn to each side. Sunlight shines through the top windows, the sets of doors leading in from the top closed. Standing in the middle of the stage, looking over the empty seats, is Joyce Walters. Her curly brown hair falls down to her shoulders, her stern face wizened yet energetic. She wears a grey trouser-suit, arms folded. JOYCE WALTERS (quietly) Not long now. CUT TO: INT. CORRIDOR – REDINGSTON HIGH – DAY Along an empty, short, bright corridor with a right turn ahead, a swirl of black shadows appears. Levia materialises from the shadows, in her black-robe, her hood up. The hood’s shadow on her face makes her cheeks look even gaunter as she scowls with burning rage. LEVIA’S POV: We move up to the corner of the wall, peering round. We spot the double doors leading into the library, as laughter comes from the unseen lounge to the right… RICK (OS) And then Zev fell! Straight down into the puddle! ZEV (OS) It wasn’t funny! The people that must be with him think it is, as roars of laughter sound. Back on Levia as a small smirk appears. LEVIA Your time is up Defender. FADE OUT. End of Act Two. Act Three: FADE IN: INT. LOUNGE AREA – REDINGSTON HIGH – DAY With a sofa/bench thing lining the three walls, a pool table in the centre area and the corridor passing by the pool table, which leads to the library; Ben, Rick, Marc Denton (short brown hair, jock-build, on basketball team) and Jayden Simpson (athletic, clean-shaven, short dirty- blond hair, good looks and blue eyes) surround the pool table. As Rick takes a shot, Jayden leans towards Ben. JAYDEN You know… the whole deal with Sammy… BEN (uninterested) What? JAYDEN Well… you know it was Hailey bullshitting right? I mean, I don’t want there to be any hard feelings between us. Ben looks at Jayden, nodding simply. Jayden nods back. JAYDEN And seeing how we’re teammates, we have to work together to beat them. BEN I agree. Rick always gloats whenever he’s winning. RICK (OS) Woo hoo! We’re winning! BEN (sighing) Crap. We pull over to the sofas. Zev sits by Ashley whilst Renee (flowing brown hair, hippyish, good looking), Nancy and Sammy sit a sofa-along. Ashley wears a slinky red dress, her wavy hair flowing freely. RENEE I’m really hoping North Western has a Wicca group. NANCY I know there are a few A-U groups out there. Maybe you’ll find one. RENEE Maybe. Sammy rolls her eyes, sulking still as she shuffles along the sofa towards Zev and Ashley. ZEV How did he take it? ASHLEY (slowly) You really wanna know? Zev nods as Ashley bites her lip. ASHLEY Well, I didn’t stick around to find out. ZEV (frowning) You didn’t? Sammy leans over to listen, nudging Zev along. He scowls at her. ASHLEY It was too upsetting. I just had to get out of there. I can barely make myself break his heart. Let alone watch it happening. ZEV I’m sure after some time, he’ll come to terms with the break up. Believe me, I know how hard it is when a girl breaks up with you. ASHLEY Wow. That’s two guys I’ve destroyed. I must be going for a record or something. ZEV I survived. And so will he. Ashley smiles as Sammy looks at Zev with a genuine ‘aww’ look. Zev looks up slowly, his eyes widening. ZEV Down! He grabs Ashley, pulling her down as a brown spiky ball smashes into the wall. Sammy lets out a yelp. We whip around, to see Marc, Ben, Rick and Jayden all staring at fifteen grey- uniformed super-soldiers. All with blank, vague faces, short-cropped hair, they stand behind Levia. LEVIA Defender. You and I have unfinished business. Zev stands slowly, along with Renee, Nancy, Sammy and Ashley. Jayden, Marc, Ben and Rick glance over to Zev. ZEV Uh… is there anyway we could do this later? See, today’s my graduation and- Levia bares her yellow, chipped teeth, throwing out her left hand. Zev yells as he’s sent flying to the side, crashing through the sidewall and disappearing into another part of the school. As dust and debris falls onto the lounge area, Jayden clenches his pool cue tightly. The super-soldiers all lift their hands to chest-height. LEVIA Kill them all. Levia suddenly swirls out in black shadows as the super-soldiers raise their hands fully. RICK Oh, oh. This looks bad. MARC (thrown) What the hell is going on? Did she just disappear- BEN No time for explanations Marc. If we don’t fight, we’ll die. JAYDEN Then we fight. Sammy hobbles up beside Jayden and Ben. She looks at Jayden as they share eye contact. JAYDEN That day in the park…a woman disappeared like that, didn’t she? Sammy gives a small nod as Nancy steps forwards. She holds one of Renee’s hands, their spare hands facing the soldiers. NANCY/RENEE Vocular! A blast of yellow light flies from their hands, smashing into the soldiers’. They smash back into the corridor wall as Ben flips up his pool cue. He moves forwards as a soldier does the same. Ben spins around, smashing the cue around the soldier’s head. Jayden follows, bringing the pool cue down onto another soldier’s back. Rick and Marc lunge forwards, tackling two soldiers and smashing them into the corridor wall. Sammy throws out one hand, sending several soldiers flying to the side. They yell loudly as Ashley and Renee hang back by the sofas. Nancy leaps into action, hooking a soldier across the jaw and sending him flying to the floor. Nancy raises her right hand, a fireball shooting out into a soldier’s chest. The soldier screams in pain as he bursts into flames. He turns, running from the fight. Jayden watches the burning soldier in shock. A soldier suddenly smashes him across the face with a jump kick. Jayden flies to the floor as Marc leaps at the soldier, yelling with rage. He smashes the soldier across the jaw with several punches. To the side, Ben rams a soldier’s face into the wall. Rick flies past, smashing into a glass cabinet on the wall. He collapses as Ashley lunges past the fallen Jayden and dives down to grab Rick. ASHLEY Hey! You ok? RICK A little woozy… Ashley helps Rick stand. She helps him move towards the sofas as Renee stands up, biting her nails. Ben helps Jayden up, both sharing a brief second of friendship in their eyes. They both turn to three more soldiers, charging them with yells. Nearby, Nancy pulls a soldier off of the fallen Marc. Marc climbs to his feet, grabbing a nearby pool cue from the floor. Nancy smashes a soldier in the gut with a punch before flicking up her left hand, a fireball flying out of her palm and hitting the soldier. He ignites into flames. CUT TO: INT. LIBRARY – REDINGSTON HIGH – DAY Rows upon rows of large bookshelves fill the square space. A centre clearing allows for a group of tables & chairs. To the left, a small set of steps lead down to the main counter (covered by two computers, some scanning equipment and stationary) and the double door exit. Orange flashes and the sounds of smashing and fighting come from outside the doors. A large, gaping hole stands between the counter and the doors, with Zev lying in a small pile of dust and debris. He groans in pain, looking around slowly. ZEV Bitch… Zev climbs to his feet, brushing dust off of himself. He looks back to the hole in the wall as we see Ashley and Renee helping Rick to sit on the sofa. Zev opens his mouth to speak but a whoosh of air sounds. He’s lifted into the air and sent soaring backwards. He crashes down in the centre clearing. Levia glides into frame as Zev once again stands. He turns to face Levia as she growls. LEVIA You will not escape this time. ZEV Wasn’t it you who did the running last time? LEVIA Enough talk. ZEV Couldn’t have said it better myself. So come on over and let me kick your skanky, former human ass. Levia smirks. LEVIA I was once a human. But now, evolution has made me far more advanced than yourself. Levia flicks out her right hand, psychic energy sending Zev crashing over the tables. He hits the floor on the opposite end of the clearing, several table lamps smashing by his side. He winces in pain, several bloody cuts on his hand due to the lamps’ glass shards. He stands quickly. LEVIA And now, vengeance shall come. Forget the Council Defender, they will not act quickly enough. But I shall. As Levia raises her arms with a sick smile, two huge bookcases nearby rise into the air. Zev’s eyes widen. ZEV Oh God. Levia growls as she hurls her arms forwards. The two large bookcases soar through the air, heading for Zev. Zev dives to the floor as the large bookcases soar over him. They both crash into several bookcases behind the clearing. Books fly in all directions as dust shoots up from the destroyed units. Zev turns to face Levia as she moves her hands all over the place. Books soar out from various bookshelves, shooting towards Zev. Zev spins around, hook kicking a thick encyclopaedia to the side. As more books come within striking distance, Zev snaps up his right, kicking away another book. He throws out several punches and chops, swatting away more books. Levia scowls. ZEV It’ll take more than few books and pieces of wood to kill me! LEVIA Duly noted. Levia turns to the main counter, flicking up her hands. The two computers rise along with several pairs of shiny scissors. The alarm stacks by the doors rip out of the ground, sparking violently. Everything soars past Levia and flies at Zev. Zev dives to the side between two bookcases as the computers smash to spot where he’d once stood. The scissors stop in mid air, turning to face the book-corridor Zev lies in. Zev quickly rolls to the side, grabbing a thick book from a bottom shelf, holding it up as two pairs of scissors fly at him. They jam into the book. Zev throws the book aside, scrambling to his feet. As he turns to run along the narrow corridor, the books behind him start to fly off the shelves, the bookcases crumpling inwards to crush him. Zev pushes himself harder as the crumbling corridor gains on him. As Zev dives out of the corridor, the shelves and books all collapse around him. He turns, quite a distance away from the table area where Levia stands. She flicks up her hands, the tables and chairs all rising. Behind Levia, a large, chunky photocopying machine drags itself along. ZEV Oh come on! Give me a break! CUT TO: INT. LOUNGE AREA – REDINGSTON HIGH – DAY Marc lies unconsciously on top of the pool table. Ben and Nancy fight off the soldiers, seven of the soldiers pushing them back. Ashley and Renee watch in fear as Rick stands from the sofa, stumbling slightly. Sammy hobbles up by several soldiers, scowling. She rises up her right hand, a slight breeze blowing through her hair. SAMMY Perimeita, zuni-setaimei! A red blast shoots from Sammy’s hand, slamming into four soldiers’ chests. Smoke suddenly rises from them as Ben and Nancy back off. The soldiers scream in pain as Sammy clicks her fingers. SAMMY Dismentis! Flames erupt over the soldiers, engulfing them in a horrific inferno. A red, warping light surrounds them, before they crumple into piles of ash. The remaining soldiers show an emotion… fear. They back off from Nancy and Ben as Sammy hobbles towards them, swinging her crutch and smashing one in the face. He falls to the floor. SAMMY Unless you want to join your friends, I suggest you leave! The two remaining soldiers exchange glances as the fallen soldier slowly stands. SOLDIER Order does not meet the terms. SAMMY I’ve just made some new terms asshole. Sammy throws out her hand, sending the three soldiers flying backwards. They skid along the floor before hitting the end wall. Nancy and Ben look towards Sammy. SAMMY We have to finish them off. BEN Agreed. Jayden stumbles into frame, blood running down his forehead. He holds up a snapped pool cue. JAYDEN Think this might do? BEN I think it might. Ben takes the cue as one soldier stands. Ben hurls the cue through the air, the sharp end jamming into the soldier’s chest. The soldier yells hitting the wall and falling down. The other two stand as Nancy flicks up her hands, two fireballs shooting out. They smash into the soldiers, igniting them instantly. Ashley, Renee and Rick move up to the others whilst Marc groans from atop the pool table. Jayden looks at Sammy. JAYDEN You have some serious explaining to do. SAMMY Let’s just say the supernatural world exists. Jayden squints his eyes, not really accepting that as Sammy moves past him and over to Ben. Ben smiles, embracing Sammy in a hug. BEN You ok? SAMMY I’m fine. You? Ben nods as Nancy steps up to Ashley, Rick and Renee. RICK What do we do about Marc and Jayden? They know our secret. RENEE Hello? I had no idea you guys knew about demons before today! I mean, I thought you might have known about Nancy, but- ASHLEY We’re gonna have to break this down into real nice simple terms for them. They all turn to look at Jayden as he stares at them with stunned eyes. Sammy and Ben move over. BEN I think Ashley should do the explaining. ASHLEY What? Why? RICK You’re a girl. Just put some sugar, spice and everything nice into the mix. Ashley scowls as Ben and Rick smirk. CUT TO: INT. LIBRARY – REDINGSTON HIGH – DAY Zev moves along a wide, bookcase corridor. He ducks down, a table suddenly flying over his head and smashing into the back wall. Levia remains in the table area, one table floating above her. She flicks her arm, the table hurling towards Zev as he emerges from a bookshelf corridor. He dodges to the side, the table smashing into one of the bookcases. As books collapse around Zev, he breaks into a run, charging Levia. She quickly drops her arms, the photocopying machine smashing down. She throws up her hand but she’s too late as Zev jumps up and double kicks her in the chest. She screams as she flies backwards, smashing into the counter and falling down. Zev moves forwards as Levia looks up. Levia growls as she raises her right hand. Zev yelps as he suddenly stops moving. He frowns as he rises up into the air slowly. ZEV Hey! Put me down! Levia stands slowly, concentrating on holding Zev up. LEVIA I’ve waited for the day I get to slay a defender. Let me say, it’s been a challenge. But it’s been worth it. Levia smiles, raising her left hand. She slowly pulls both her hands in opposite directions, Zev’s arms and legs spreading. He yells in pain as he’s being pulled apart. LUCY (OS) Zev! Levia looks to the double doors to see Lucy marching in, wearing a frilly skirt and black top. She throws out her hands, her brown hair wavering behind her. Levia suddenly flies through the air with a gasp, smashing into a wall. Zev yells as he falls. Lucy throws up her hands, Zev stopping an inch away from the floor. Lucy manoeuvres Zev safely onto his feet. She moves up to him as he breathes a sigh of relief. ZEV Thanks. LUCY The others took care of the soldiers. I said I’d check on you. Zev nods, turning to look towards the sidewall where Levia groans, turning onto her back. LUCY Here. Lucy clicks her fingers, a sharp piece of wood rising up from the destroyed bookcases of the library. The wood soars to Zev. He raises his hand, catching the bit of wood. ZEV Thanks. LUCY Go do your thing. Zev nods, walking cautiously towards the fallen Levia. Levia slowly sits up, leaning back against the wall, thick black blood oozing down her forehead. Zev comes within ten feet. ZEV So. You were right. You’ve evolved from being a human. LEVIA I am eternal defender… I’ll- Zev suddenly hurls the piece of wood at Levia, striking her in the heart. She lets out a shocked gasp, her eyes bulging as the wood juts out from her chest. Zev looks on solemnly. ZEV But you still suffer our weaknesses. Levia’s eyes glaze over as Zev turns away from her. Lucy looks at him solemnly as he walks away. We pan over Levia’s body as her gaunt cheeks suddenly crumple inwards, her skin peeling away and decaying. Her eyes melt down into black gunk, her blond hair wilting and dropping out. Her skeletal frame is soon visible as green demonic ooze drips out of her mouth and nose. CUT TO: INT. LOUNGE AREA – REDINGSTON HIGH – DAY Zev pushes through the double doors, Lucy behind him. Sammy, Rick, Ben and Ashley step up to them. SAMMY Hey. RICK We were about to come on in and help whoop that bitch’s ass. ZEV It’s ok. Lucy got there just in time. SAMMY Sorry we didn’t come as well. We had to deal with Jayden and Marc. ZEV (slowly) They know, don’t they? RICK You know secrets. They never do stay buried for long. BEN So uh, what the hell was going on in there? ASHLEY Yeah. All we could hear was huge crashes and smashing. I would have looked through the hole, but hey, I was busy being paralysed with fear. ZEV Well. Let’s just say that the Council is another member down. SAMMY Levia? You killed her? Zev nods as we see Renee and Nancy standing by Jayden and the groggy Marc. RICK Go Zev. See. The Council aren’t so tough. Zev raises an eyebrow to Rick’s comment as they all slowly walk towards the dusty lounge. ZEV (to Sammy) I think I need you and Nancy to do something for me. SAMMY Sure. What is it? ZEV I’ll tell you on the way to the bathrooms. I think I better clean up. ASHLEY Yeah. With all that dirt and blood on you, people might begin to stare at the ceremony. Rick turns to Lucy, checking her out as the others head onwards. RICK In all the action earlier, I didn’t get a chance to say this. LUCY What? RICK You look amazing. Lucy smiles, nodding in thanks as Rick smiles at her. They both move on. CUT TO: INT. JANE’S OFFICE – JENUELS LAW FIRM – DAY We pan around the square office, unseen for some time now. Jane sits in her black trouser suit behind her desk, face vacant and eyes staring off into space. Sunlight shines through the large window behind her. Her phone suddenly rings. She jumps slightly before grabbing the black receiver. JANE Hello? We pull back over the neatly organised office, passing by several filing cabinets as Jane frowns at the phone call. JANE What? No… I mean yes, I understand… (beat) When? FADE TO: INT. KEN’S CAR – DAY Ken sits parked somewhere, holding his cell phone up. He wears a white shirt with black trousers, frowning at the cell. KEN What do you mean? You can’t be serious Ben… she’s my wife for god’s sake! No, I will not calm down! Wait, no, wait- Ken yells in rage, throwing his cell phone against the dashboard, shattering it instantly. He smashes his fists onto the steering wheel, yelling with rage as the horn sounds. His eyes begin to well with tears as he breaks down with a loud sob. FADE OUT. End of Act Three. Insert Commercials: This October. Own Silent Halloween on special edition, 2-disc DVD set. Act Four: FADE IN: INT. TOILETS – REDINGSTON POLICE DEPARTMENT – DAY With white tiled walls, several stalls, urinals and sinks; Jamie Howard stands opposite the mirrors, washing his hands. He stares at himself in the mirror, his blue eyes dull, his stubble looking longer than usual, his blond hair a real mess. Detective Wayne Johnson (bald headed black guy, white shirt with trousers and gun holster showing) steps up beside Jamie. JOHNSON (deep voice) You look like shit Howard. JAMIE Thanks Johnson. JOHNSON I thought you were going to some ceremony today? JAMIE Yeah… I was. But I had a rough break-up with my girlfriend last night. I don’t think she’d want me there today. JOHNSON You know what. You should go. Never leave something like that on a bad note, you know? JAMIE (frowning) Since when did you care? Johnson turns to face Jamie properly as a uniformed officer passes by, heading for a stall. JOHNSON Since I considered asking for your help. JAMIE My help? With what? JOHNSON I’m looking into a peculiar case at the moment, a certain teenage boy. One that you know and don’t deny it. I’ve seen you with him. JAMIE Not going to deny anything. Just tell me what this is about. JOHNSON (quietly) I’ve got a file thicker than my biceps on this kid. He’s involved with a lot of weird disappearances, sightings and murders. I don’t know why or how. That’s why I’m asking for your help. Jamie gulps, his face draining of colour as he knows whom Johnson means. Johnson leers over him. JOHNSON What do you say? Jamie stares at Johnson silently… CUT TO: INT. CLASSROOM – REDINGSTON HIGH – DAY Inside Ken’s room, with the blinds pulled down over the windows, the rows of desks empty, Ken sits behind his desk. His eyes are red and bleary. He holds a silver framed photo: the wedding photo of himself and Jane smiling happily. A knock comes from the door as Ken looks round to the door. Jeff Nichols (well-built, middle-aged, short brown/grey hair) steps into the room, his face stretched into a fake smile. He wears a dark suit. Ken looks taken aback, taking a large sniffle. JEFF NICHOLS I hear you have an issue with Miss. VanStar’s new position. KEN (trembling) She’s my wife. You won’t take her from me. JEFF NICHOLS (frowning) No? Ken stands, pure anger on his face and voice. KEN What the hell gives you the right to try and ruin our marriage you bastard?! JEFF NICHOLS (seriously) Careful Mr. Rosenberg. You don’t want to make your position with the Messengers untenable, do you? KEN Are you threatening me? JEFF NICHOLS No. I’m simply warning you. Stay out of this or suffer the consequences Mr. Rosenberg. Miss. VanStar is leaving for England and that’s final. When the new Defender there is chosen, they will need a good mentor. And Jane is perfect for the job. Ken clenches his fists as the Jeff turns, walking through the doorway. He turns back, a smug smirk on his face. JEFF NICHOLS Have a nice day. Jeff gives a small laugh. He turns and heads off. Ken grits his teeth in rage. Zev appears in the doorway, frowning. ZEV What was he doing here? Ken turns angrily to his desk, sitting down and leaning onto the desk. Zev walks slowly towards Ken. ZEV Ken? KEN That asshole has forced Jane to accept a new position in England. ZEV What? He can’t force he! She loves you Ken. She married you and hell, she just bought a house with you. I’m sure she’ll be staying right here. Zev smiles but it quickly drops as Ken’s bleary eyes meet with his. ZEV (sadly) Oh god. She’s leaving? KEN (sniffling) They’ll arrest her under treason if she refuses to go. Zev steps up to Ken. He extends his arm, placing his hand onto Ken’s shoulders. ZEV We can fight this. We’ll just talk to them and- KEN There is no fighting this. Ken looks up, a tear running down his cheek. Zev trembles slightly. ZEV Please don’t cry… I can’t watch you break down Ken. You’re the strongest person I know. If you break… it’ll break me. Zev looks away, clearing his throat as Ken wipes away his tear. KEN I know we have this weird father-son bond but can we just forget that for today? Can I just be somebody who’s in need of a good friend? Zev takes his hand back, running it through his hair and nodding. ZEV Sure. But I really can’t watch the people I love cry. It’ll get me started and then- SAMMY (OS) Hey. Zev and Ken both turn. Ken wipes his eyes quickly as Sammy and Nancy step into frame. ZEV Uh… did you find anything out? NANCY There were some chips and programme discs missing. SAMMY We thought the Messenger’s might have them, but they’ve only got deactivated the chips. They’re not removing them until tomorrow. KEN (slowly) What’s uh… what’s going on? Zev, Sammy and Nancy look at Ken. ZEV I sent Nancy and Sammy to Avolon. We were attacked by Levia and a group of super-soldiers. KEN Super-soldiers? I thought- ZEV Exactly. NANCY It looks like the Council took their soldiers’ chips. SAMMY Zev managed to kill Levia though. That’s some good news. Ken smirks to himself, shaking his head as Sammy frowns. KEN I could use some good news. NANCY What’s wrong? Has something happened? SAMMY Is it Jane? Ken clears his throat, trying to hold back the tears as he stands. KEN I better get ready for Graduation. I’ll see you all out there. SAMMY Ken, wait- Ken heads off as Sammy sighs. The girls turn to Zev. SAMMY What the hell is going on? ZEV Turns out the Messenger’s can be a bunch of insensitive assholes. NANCY (taken aback) Zev, how can you say that? The Messengers are your- ZEV What? My superiors? They’re forcing Jane to transfer to England. If she doesn’t go, they’ll use their mumbo jumbo Messenger law to arrest her. SAMMY What? NANCY I didn’t know… Sorry. ZEV Right now, we have to get through Graduation. Then we’ll worry about how to keep Jane from moving. Zev turns, striding for the door as Sammy turns to Nancy. SAMMY You know what. Forget me being mad at you for leaving. We’ve got to make the most of the time we have, right? NANCY (smiling) That’s right. This goes to show. People can just be ousted out of our lives at any moment. SAMMY It’s sad. But true. Now. Let’s go Graduate. This dress is starting to ride me. Nancy laughs as the two of them head for the door, Sammy tugging at the back area of her dress. CUT TO: INT. AUDITORIUM – REDINGSTON HIGH – DAY We pan around the large sloping rows of plastic seats. Parents, relatives and friends of the graduating students fill the seats, whilst several bottom rows are filled with the senior class, all dressed in their blue Graduating robes and those funny square hats. On stage, Joyce Walters stands at the microphone stand. A few rows of teachers sit on foldable chairs on stage, including the old, grey haired, wizened Mrs. Tolken, wearing her usual brown musty suit. We spot a fresher looking Ken, as if he’d never been upset, sitting by the stocky Wayne Smith. We pan over one of the rows of family members, coming across Sue and David. David holds up a digital camera, a smile on his face. Sue holds the baby Kristen in her lap. She’s getting pretty big now as she points ahead, smiling and gurgling. Beside David, sits Mary and Arnold. Mary snatches a packet of jelly babies from Arnold’s hands. MARY WALKER You are on a diet Mister! Remember what the doctor said about your heart? No more candy! ARNOLD WALKER Woman! You’ll be the death of me! Not a bunch of sugary babies! Arnold folds his arms sulkily as Mary scowls at him. We pull down over a couple of rows, spotting the hippy-like Rose Hume, wearing dangly earrings, a bright purple top and flowing skirt. Her brown hair rests neatly on her shoulders as she smiles happily. Beside her, sits Becky Hume, her dark hair tied back into a ponytail. Becky leans into Rose’s arm, smiling happily. ROSE I couldn’t be prouder of my baby. BECKY Me either. After everything’s that happened… we really needed a day like this. Rose smiles, wrapping her arm around Becky. A few seats along, sits Lucy. Beside her, sits Hilary Evans (forties, wavy brown/grey hair, good figure) and Edward Evans (early forties, beer belly, balding brown hair). They were last seen in 1.9, and Edward appears t have overcome the shooting tragedy he suffered. HILARY EVANS I can’t believe our Rick is graduating. So soon. EDWARD Yeah, the kid’s grown up fast. Lucy looks down a few rows, waving at somebody. We pull down to find the senior class. Chatting, laughing and goofing around. Zev, Rick, Sammy, Ben, Ashley, Nancy, Jayden, Marc, Renee, Jerry, Candi and the rest of the class. Rick waves up to Lucy as Joyce’s voice sounds out from various speakers along the walls. JOYCE WALTERS (VO) Good afternoon, senior class of 2006, family and friends. On stage, Joyce beams a rare smile out to the crowd. JOYCE WALTERS Congratulations on what has been an exceptional year. We have seen triumphs in sports and academic achievement. We have suffered loss. We get a shot of Renee, looking down sadly (Mandy). Another shot of the cheerleading squad in their blue robes, along with Ashley, as they lower their heads (Emma). JOYCE WALTERS But out of the sadness and grief, the ones we have lost will live on in our hearts. (then) Today is a day for a happy occasion. You are all ascending to adulthood. Forget the biological stuff. Adulthood starts today. When you go out into the world, whether it is for further education, life experiences or work, you will be entering a new chapter in your lives. We pan over the students/parents as they all look at Joyce quietly, respectfully. JOYCE WALTERS A chapter of maturity, adventure and finding your place in the world. And believe me, it can be tough. But it can also be exciting and sensational. When you collect your certificate and walk out of here, remember to take care of yourselves and to strive for achievement. I have never seen a class suffer so much whilst gaining so much in one year. (beat) I won’t waffle on too much, unless you care for my speech on life journeys. So I’ll skip it and move to my final words to you all. Congratulations to the senior class of 2006. Joyce does a little nod before taking a step back. She and the other teachers all raise their hands, clapping loudly. The students let out cheers and roaring hoots as the families & friends join in with the clapping. AERIAL VIEW of the auditorium as the students all stand, throwing their hats into the air. Loud hoots continue as we… FADE TO: EXT. REDINGSTON BEACH – EVENING As the sun hangs low in the orange-streaked sky, ‘School’s Out’ by Alice Cooper slams out from large speakers set up around the wooden beach bar/hut. Groups of students dance about, holding their drinks and chatting/laughing loudly. By the beach hut, more students sit about at tables and chairs. Zev, Rick, Sammy and Ben sit at a square table. They have a bowl of fries on the table along with their drinks, out of their blue robes. RICK Today was pretty amazing. I might actually miss that place. ZEV Seriously? RICK (grinning) Nah! Zev smirks, turning to look out to the sea. Marc, Jayden and several other jocks all goof around with a football by the sea shore. Marc hurls a can of soda at one guy, hitting him in the back. The guy falls face down as Zev smirks. VICKI (OS) Hey Mr. Graduate. Zev frowns, turning and looking up. Standing between Sammy and Ben is the stunning Vicki Reid. In a slinky red top with jeans, her blond hair hanging down and smiling brightly, Vicki pulls up a seat. SAMMY Hey! We had a heads up. Notice the lack of shock here? VICKI (smirking) Ashley never could keep a secret. So. We’ve all graduated now. How awesome does it feel? BEN Pretty damn awesome. RICK Here’s looking forward to life. VICKI What about you Zev? You look a little… SAMMY Down? It’s been a bit of a day. VICKI Huh. Demons? ZEV That. And other stuff. Lucy and Ashley approach from the bar, a tray of drinks in hand. Rick notices them, dragging over a nearby chair. Ben grabs another. ASHLEY Vicki! Hey! VICKI Hey. Zev wasn’t as surprised as I was expecting. ASHLEY (slowly) Oh… yeah, I kinda spilled. VICKI Figured. SAMMY (frowning) Ash? ASHLEY Yeah? SAMMY Isn’t that Jamie? Ashley whips around. Sure enough, Jamie stands by the bar, twiddling with his thumbs in his shirt/trousers. ASHLEY Oh god. VICKI You’ve already done the break-up? SAMMY You knew? VICKI We talked about it on the phone. BEN Maybe he just needs to say goodbye. If I was ever going to lose the love of my life, I’d want to say goodbye. Sammy and Ben exchange lovey-dovey looks as Ashley sighs. She walks towards Jamie. The others turn to watch. Jamie manages a small smile as Ashley steps up to the bar. ASHLEY Hey. JAMIE Hey. I uh, I saw you at graduation. You looked amazing. ASHLEY (sweetly) Thank you. You should have said hi or something. JAMIE I was going to… but I thought I’d leave it until now. ASHLEY (slowly) I know it was a bit of a bombshell the other night, but- JAMIE It’s ok. I understand. If I were eighteen, I’d want to get on with my life. Just make sure you call me every day, all right? Jamie forces grins as Ashley nods with a smile. ASHLEY Promise. JAMIE Now get back over to your friends. I better get back to work. Oh, and would you tell Zev I have something to talk to him about tomorrow? ASHLEY Oh, ok. Sure. I’ll see you around. Jamie nods with a big fake smile. Ashley turns, walking off as Jamie’s smile drops. He looks heartbroken, his eyes filled with sorrow. He turns away and slowly walks off with his head lowered. CUT TO: INT. KEN’S CAR – NIGHT With the darkness outside, Ken sits behind the wheel, the interior light on. He sighs, leaning back in his seat, rubbing his eyes. Ken holds a new cell phone to his ear. KEN Sorry about having to leave abruptly. But by the sounds of it, you’re having a good time. (beat) Yeah. Congratulations Sammy. Tell Zev and the others the same, ok? Ken lowers his phone with a deep sigh. The passenger door opens as Jane climbs in, closing the door. She turns to Ken as he looks at her with surprise. JANE What? You think I wouldn’t see you out of the window? Please. I’m not blind. KEN I was going to come in… I just needed some time alone. JANE Not to sound horrible Ken, but we’re going to have a lot of that after next week. Please. Let’s just spend the time we have together. It’s going to break my heart to leave you. KEN It’s already broken mine. Jane whimpers slightly, a tear running down her cheek. Ken leans over, wiping the tear away. They exchange sorrowful looks before Ken gently holds her chin. They lean in to one another, their lips meeting whilst tears start to run down both of their faces. CUT TO: EXT. ROSENBERG RESIDENCE – NIGHT We watch through the car’s windshield as Ken and Jane kiss slowly and tearfully. CUT TO: EXT. REDINGSTON BEACH – NIGHT A large fire burns brightly in the centre of the darkened beach. Crickets chirp, the sea gently runs up the shore and the students either sit by the fire, swim in the sea, sit by the beach hut or dance wildly to the rock music bursting out from the nearby speakers. We pull down by a quiet spot of the sandy shore. Sitting down on several blankets, are Zev, Vicki, Rick, Lucy, Sammy, Ben, Ashley and Nancy. They all stare out to the starry sky above the oceanic horizon. VICKI We all have our whole lives ahead of us. LUCY Well… I’ll be there next year. RICK You’re here now. With us. Lucy rolls her eyes, leaning into Rick as he wraps his arms around her. They stare at one another, a hint of love in their eyes. Sammy sits within Ben’s lap whilst Vicki and Zev sit cross-legged beside each other. NANCY So. Who’s up for a last dance before we all collapse? LUCY Me! Lucy grabs Rick, jumping up. RICK Whoa! Ok…. Zev? Coming? ZEV I think I’ll sit this one out. I have to save my energy. You know. For the hardest summer of training ever. SAMMY Me too. I don’t think my stitches would like the body movement. I’ll go to the bar though. I need some more nachos. I don’t think they have them on the higher planes. NANCY You’ll have to pack a case of them to bring with you. BEN I’ll come with. SAMMY Yes you will. Ben helps Sammy stand, handing her the crutches. SAMMY Be back soon. VICKI Later guys. RICK Maui Tai is gonna be tough to learn dude. Come and dance and have fun and stuff! Whoa! Lucy drags Rick away as Nancy, Sammy and Ben also head off, leaving Zev and Vicki alone. They turn to look at each other, childish smirks coming onto their faces. ‘Dancing In The Moonlight’ by Toploader starts to play out from the nearby speakers as various dancing students cheer loudly. ZEV So… will we ever tell them what happened after prom? VICKI I dunno. I kinda like the suspense. ZEV You’re right. It’s more fun to leave them in the dark. Vicki grins, leaning over and kissing Zev softly. Zev moves his hands along Vicki’s jaw line, kissing her passionately. We pull back from the kissing pair. AERIAL SHOT of the beach. By the large burning fire, Lucy, Rick & Nancy dance wildly; Sammy and Ben stand by the bar, chatting and laughing; Jerry Cater and Candi Norway sit on a log by the fire, leaning into one another and sharing a soft, passionate kiss together; Zev and Vicki continue to kiss, the moonlight washing over them. ‘Dancing In The Moonlight’ continues over as we… FADE TO: INT. OFFICE – POLICE DEPARTMENT – NIGHT Jamie sits behind his cluttered desk, shirtsleeves rolled up, a bottle of vodka on top of all the paperwork. He looks pretty rough as he takes a full glass of vodka to his mouth, draining it quickly. He lowers the glass down slowly with tearful eyes. He lifts up a photo of Ashley lying across a bed, a large smile on her bright face. He lets out a loud sob, his eyes closing as he drops the photo onto the desk. FADE TO: INT. KEN’S CAR – NIGHT Ken holds Jane in his arms across the front seats. Yes, still clothed! They both stare out the windshield to the starry sky, their eyes glistening. JANE I’m going to miss this. KEN (croakily) Don’t. Please. Ken holds back his tears as Jane’s face begins to crumble. She lets out a gasp for air as Ken closes his eyes slowly. He kisses the back of Jane’s head as several tears drip down his cheeks and onto her hair. FADE TO: EXT. REDINGSTON BEACH – NIGHT Vicki and Zev continue to kiss, slowly falling back onto the blanket. They pause for breath, staring deep into each other’s eyes. ZEV I love you. VICKI And I love you. ZEV We’ll see each other during the breaks, right? VICKI Duh. Whenever I have a break, I’ll be visiting you. They smile at one another. ‘Dancing In The Moonlight’ fades out as we… FADE OUT. End Credits: Theme: ‘Smack My Bitch Up’ by The Prodigy.
