METRO SCHOOL LESSON PLAN
NAME: Falls DATE: Week of 8-29-11 TIME: See schedule CONTENT AREA: Science
NCSCOS GRADE LEVEL STANDARD: (From the NC Curriculum Extensions Document; include
the actual numeric grade level)
Essence: Identify physical properties of objects
K.P.2.1 Classify objects by observable physical properties (including size, color, shape, texture, weight
and flexibility).
K.P.2.2 Compare the observable physical properties of different kinds of materials (clay, wood, cloth,
paper, etc) from which objects are made
Extended:
EX.K.P.2.1 Identify objects by their physical properties as “same” or “different.”
EX.K.P.2.2 Sort objects by observable physical
properties (including size, color, shape and texture).
OBJECTIVE: The student will be able to…
Early Symbolic: Demonstrate knowledge of the properties of objects.
Pre-Symbolic: Demonstrate awareness that objects have properties.
LINKS TO PRIOR LEARNING:
Students have worked with objects and materials that can be recycles in tactile lessons. Students interact
with recycling materials on a daily basis through exploring their educational and home environments.
Students assist in recycling in their classrooms and in later grades may be a part of the recycling CBT
program.
MATERIALS/TECHNOLOGIES NEEDED:
Smart board, magazine clippings, various objects that are recycled (plastic bottles, jugs, steel cans,
aluminum cans, mixed paper products,) glue, tactile materials, recycling bin, various books/videos on
recycling.
LESSON PROCEDURES:
Day 1: The teacher will begin with the KWHL smart board lesson plan and an introductory video on
Discovery Ed. (i.e. Recycling, Taking Care of Our Earth, etc.) or a book on Capstone (Recycling, Earth,
etc.) After watching the video, the teacher will discuss recycling and introduce the related materials.
The students will discuss what they already know, what they need to know and how they will find out
(reading books, interacting with educational materials, videos, activities and crafts.) The teacher will
talk about Metro‟s recycling center and the CBT program that the students may want to join in later
years. The class will take a field trip to the center to explore and interact. The teacher can reinforce
what has been discussed and the students can search for the answers to the KWHL questions. After the
students have visited the recycling center, the students will come back together and share what they‟ve
learned.
Day 2: The teacher will begin with a review of recycling and what was covered in the first lesson. The
students will discuss what was learned and questions are left to answer. Then the students will break
into three groups. One group will listen to a related book or video on Capstone or Discovery Ed. One
group will read a related book. One group will explore sorting materials that can be recycled v.
materials that cannot be recycled at this time. After each group has visited each center, the students will
come back together and share what they‟ve learned.
Day 3: The teacher will begin with a review of the two previous lessons. The students will discuss the
KWHL questions and answers they have discovered. Then the students will break into groups for the
craft. Students can choose to „recycle‟ materials into an art project (i.e. create rainsticks, flower pots,
bird feeders, people, etc.) or the students can take magazine clippings and create a collage about
recycling. A third group could sort materials into recycling groups and create a tactile poster about
recycling.
INDEPENDENT PRACTICE (Additional opportunities where you plan to implement the objectives of
this lesson for the students to carry over the skills to other areas…this is to help in planning for
generalization practice)
Students will discuss how different objects and their properties have a personal impact on their lives
(personal recycling, landscapes, jobs, homes, etc.)
SUMMARY/CLOSURE/ASSESSMENT:
Review the topics discussed and assess based on lesson objectives. Data will be collected and reviewed.
