Top Ten Study Tips!
The following is a list of techniques used by parents whose students generally find success
academically. You might be trying some at home already. Feel free to use any of these methods that
work best for you and your child.
1. Make a daily habit of checking the student planner with your child.
2. Know what’s going on. Check for upcoming assignments at…

3. Use email to get information from teachers (it’s faster than telephoning).
4. Instead of asking if homework has been completed, ask to see the work.
5. Make sure television, telephone, video games, and/or loud music are NOT a part of the
study environment.
6. Check in on your child as the evening progresses to make sure work is getting done.
7. Have your child explain the work to you. Even if it’s information you already know, making
kids verbalize the work always leads to greater understanding.
8. Study with your child for tests, quizzes, or other graded evaluations. Students who prepare
on their own rarely do as well as students who study with another person.
9. Encourage study groups at your house. At least you’ll know where your child is, who he/she is
with, and what is going on.
10. Last, but not least, insist on high standards. Work will always be neatly done if your child
knows it’s what you expect.
Generally speaking, kids will be kids, so it’s up to the adults to create expectations that value hard
work, honesty, and responsibility for our actions. It’s not an easy job, but it’s definitely worth the
effort.
