Cowboys Stumble; Miners Prevail
Sunday, December 18th, 2005
The Canyon Country Canyon Cowboys threw two, red-zone interceptions, the second
with 1:31 left in the game, as Nevada Union escaped with a 14-7 victory, capturing the
California Division I State Championship last night.
Canyon dominated the first half, out-gaining the Miners 153-66.
But in the second half, trailing 7-0, Nevada Union drove 80-yards in 14-plays, tying the
game on a Chad Mason-to-Josh Noxon, nine-yard scoring strike and a Dante Punteri
conversion kick.
Nevada Union swarmed Canyon QB Austin Civita all evening and on the Cowboy's
next possession, forced him to throw his second of three interceptions, giving the
Miners the ball at the CHS 21. NU failed to score; missing a 33-yard field goal.
Midway through the fourth quarter, Nevada Union took over at their own 28. Three
rushes gained 34-yards, giving them a first-and-ten at the Canyon 38. Mason found
Noxon again, this time on a deep-post. Noxon took it in for the score, giving NU the
lead, 14-7 with 7:28 remaining.
Canyon's next series saw the drive stall at the 50. Punter Phil Malinowski
pinned the Miners at their own six with 5:39 left.
Nevada Union didn't gain a first down and punted only 27-yards to their own 33.
From there, Canyon registered two first downs, placing the ball at the NU 10 with
1:57 to go.
After two-plays gained two-yards, the Cowboys faced a third-and-goal at the eight.
Civita and the Cowboys dreadful night ended when NU's James Brindley snared his
second interception of the evening in the back of the end zone, giving the Miners
the crown.

Warriors Claim Title, 34-19
Saturday, December 17th, 2005
San Jose Valley Christian is the California Division II champion by way of their 34-19
victory last night over Ridgecrest Burroughs before a crowd of 22,000+ at The Home
Depot Center in Carson.
The formula for the Warrior victory was a devastating ground-game, combined with
an alert defense. VC registered 53-rushing attempts in gaining 242-yards, while their
defense frustrated Burro's QB, David LaFromboise, into an uncharacteristic 3-for-19
passing effort.
The defense scored seven-points of their own in the first minute of the game. After
Burrough's Hayo Carpenter caught a pass at the Warrior's 26, VC's AJ Alvarez stripped
him of the ball. The Warrior's Jake Walker picked it up, then, after running six-yards,
lateralled to teammate Mark Castelo who sprinted the rest of the way for a 7-0, Valley
Christian lead.
The teams traded field goals, making it 10-3 early in the second quarter.
VC's Domonique Hunsucker (19-108) capped a 13-play, 80-yard march with a nine-
yard scoring run around left end.
A field goal at the end of the first half by the Warrior's Ben Hansen, made it 20-3,
Valley Christian.
Burroughs opened with possession in the third, but after three-plays, they faced a
fourth-and-two at their own 28. The Burros tried a fake punt, but a mix-up in on the play,
led to a one-yard loss, giving VC the ball at the Burrough's 27.
From there, it took six-plays, finished by another Hunsucker touchdown (one-yard),
raising the lead to 27-3.
Burrough's fought back, but never clicked with their passing game, as Valley Christian
swarmed All-Stater Hayo Carpenter.
Running-back Anthony Williams scored for Burroughs, pulling them to within 34-16
with 9:24 to go in the game.
After a Burro's field goal, Burroughs recovered the onside-kick, giving them the ball
at the VC 46 with 3:52 left, trailing 34-19.
They maneuvered to the Warrior's nine, before Valley Christian's JJ Kulusich
tackled LaFromboise short of a first down with 1:08 remaining.
VC QB Dante Perez, was an unsung hero, connecting on an impressive 7-for-9
passes.

Seraphs Halt Streak at 61
Sunday, December 18th, 2005
Modesto Central Catholic's 61-game winning streak is over. Yet, they achieved a
measure of success by scaring the daylights out of a nationally ranked Saint Bonaventure
team, in yesterday afternoon's Division III championship battle from Carson.
The talent-rich Seraphs jumped out to an early 6-0 lead with an 11-play, 67-yard
march, capped by a two-yard, Matt Evans-to-Kevin Ballard touchdown pass.
On the second play of the second quarter, Central Catholic took the lead when speedy
sophomore Louis Bland broke-loose for a 53-yard touchdown run.
A Jeremy Licea field goal gave SB a 9-7 halftime advantage, then the Seraphs increased
the lead to 16-7 when Michael Williams cashed in from one-yard out, 1:37 into the third
quarter.
CC responded.
The Raider's spent the better part of their streak, drilling hapless Southern Athletic
League foes, including an 84-6 victory in the championship versus Modesto Christian.
Against a superior foe, Central Catholic still was able to conjure-up some magic.
A ten-play, 80-yard drive, capped by Daniel Stall's one-yard touchdown run, pulled
the Raider's to within two at 16-14.
The Seraph's Licea connected for another field goal, pushing the lead to 19-14.
After a fourth quarter punt by SB, the Raiders drove 75-yards, helped by 30-yards
in penalties by the Seraphs. Stall romped in from 20-yards, giving CC a 20-19 edge, with
5:39 left in the game. The Raider's missed the two-pointer.
Saint Bonaventure answered their challenge.
Evans hit four-of-four passes, for 35-yards, while Michael Lee (21-223) gained 30-yards
rushing, including the last three on a scoring burst that gave the Seraphs a 25-20 lead
with 1:18 to go. Evans threw incomplete on the two-pointer.
CC took possession on their 20 with three timeouts and only :78 seconds remaining.
On second-down from their own 23, Stall ripped-off a 40-yard run, placing the ball
at the Seraph's 37 with :54 seconds left..
Three plays later, QB Ruben Ramos scrambled for a first down to the SB 25.
Central Catholic had one timeout and to preserve it, they spiked the ball to stop
the clock with :22 seconds to go.
Ramos threw low on second down, then lofted one toward the back of the end zone
on third down. CC's Chase Deadder got a hand on the ball, but couldn't haul it in.
The final play from the 25 started with :05 seconds remaining. The pass toward a mass
of players, was knocked away by an SB defender, giving the Seraphs the crown, 25-20.
