1         INTRODUCTION


1.1        Subject, Purpose and Scope
The subject and purpose of this document include the following:
-     To describe the data transfer on the WTB for NJT ALP46 and Comet V.
-     To describe the compliance to and the deviation from UIC 556 [2].
-     To provide input for suppliers who wish to deliver vehicles that will be capable of interoperation with the
      NJT ALP46 and/or the NJT Comet V cab and trailer cars.
-     To provide input for the IEEE 1544 standardization process.

2.1   Redundancy

Implementation on Comet V/ALP46:
On Comet V/ALP46 there is no redundant Gateway. The wiring is redundant and complies with IEC 61375 [1] (see
2.2).
Requirements for interoperability:
The wiring must be redundant and comply with IEC 61375 [1] (see 2.2).
Bombardier does not support vehicles with two or more active Gateways. If Gateway redundancy is wished on a
interoperable vehicle, cold redundancy has to be implemented.
A configuration, in which two non-reduntant Gateways on one vehicle represent one UIC-node is neither supported.


2.2   Wiring
Implementation on Comet V/ALP46:
The wiring of the WTB conforms to NJT DTN cable specification |5|. It is redundant and complies with IEC 61375
[1]. In case of disconnection or disturbance of one line the Gateways are able to switch over to the other.
Note: In order to provide best possible connection and overcome the oxidation or whiskering of the contacts on the
connectors between vehicles, Gateways on the Comet V/ALP46 vehicles have activated the optional fritting mode -
as described in IEC 61375 [1].

Requirements for interoperability:
The wiring on interoperable vehicles must also comply with IEC 61375 [1]. Fritting mode shall be supported as well.
The wiring must also conform to NJT DTN cable specification |5|


2.3   Vehicle orientation
Implementation on Comet V/ALP46:
On vehicle level each Gateway of the WTB distinguishes two directions, named "Direction 1" and "Direction 2". A
vehicle is wired in such a way that Direction 1 of a Gateway corresponds to Direction 1 of its vehicle. The figure
below shows an overhead view of a Comet V or ALP46 vehicle showing Direction 1 (which is also called the A End
for Comet V cars and the F End for ALP46 locomotives) and direction 2 (which is also called B End for both Comet
V and ALP46). The corresponding side directions, left/right and north/south are also shown on the figure.

The wiring and relation between the direction and sides of a Gateway, vehicle and principal direction of travel is
described in IEC 61 375 [1]. The vehicle orientation is implemented according to this.

Requirements for interoperability:
Interoperable vehicles must also comply with orientation requirements in UIC 556 [2] and IEC 61 375 [1].

3     TRAIN INAUGURATION AND START UP


3.1   Conformation to existing norms

Implementation on Comet V/ALP46:
The train inauguration and start up procedures comply with UIC 556 [2] and IEC 61 375 [1].

Requirements for interoperability:
The train inauguration and start up procedures must also comply with UIC 556 [2] and IEC 61 375 [1].


3.2   NADI information / UIC Mapping server

General Information concerning NADI/UIC Mapping server:
The UIC 556 [2] defines the format of the application data exchanged across the WTB in order to ensure
interoperability in international passenger trains consisting of coaches from different manufacturers and/ or railway
operators.
The UIC Mapping Server is an application defined for a UIC-556 compatible train consist. The mapping server
maintains a distributed data base, NADI, which allows all vehicles to access to information related to every other
vehicle in the conisist, including:
mapping between UIC and TCN addresses (The TCN addresses are low-level (link layer) addresses which may
  change dynamically due to a possible change of the TCN master and in general do not reflect the application view
  of the train).
UIC vehicle identification number
two subsets of permanent attributes for trainsets and vehicles (traction vehicle, 1 class coach, has phone for

  passengers, etc.)
dynamic attributes (leading vehicle, last vehicle)
vehicle number for seat reservation

The UIC Mapping Server also allows the following:
controlling the operational mode of the WTB
requesting the property „leading‟
defining groups of vehicles
sending messages to all vehicles or to a group of vehicles
setting the whole composition into stand-by (sleep) mode
inhibiting or allowing train lengthening

Implementation on Comet V/ALP46:
The Comet V/ALP46 vehicles fulfill the requirements for the UIC Mapping Server.

A Bombardier specific application on the Vehicle Control System allows the internal handling of UIC Mapping Server
data for control and visualization (-> see chapter 4.1.4 monitoring).

Requirements for interoperability:
The UIC Mapping Server according to UIC 556 [2] must be implemented.


3.3   Restrictions

Implementation on Comet V/ALP46:
UIC allows a maximum of 22 vehicles on a train consist, however, there are tighter restrictons for Comet V/ ALP46.
The gateway configuration and vehicle control is limited to a maximum of 16 vehicles of which no more than 4 can
be ALP46 locomotives.

Requirements for interoperability:
There can be no more than 16 vehicles on the train consist, no more than four of which can be locomotives of any
type.

4     WTB CONFIGURATON


4.1     Supervision of Nodes / Vehicle Monitoring


4.1.1    Train Consist Level and Data Transfer Supervision

General Information concerning supervision of data transfer:
Every vehicle (node) is able to supervise the data sent by any other vehicle at any time. The data transfer validity is
supervised by check variables and sinktime supervision.
The sink time supervision defines the time period within which a signal on the WTB has to be refreshed. If it is not
refreshed within the time period, the sinktime supervision is triggered. The invalid signal is set to a default value (“0”
for binary and “0000H” for analog values) and the respective check variable is set to “0”. The most likely cause of
this is a power failure on the sender vehicle.

Implementation on Comet V/ALP46:
The Comet V cab and trailer cars and ALP46 locomotives use the check variables as defined by UIC 556 [2] in the
WTB telegrams R1 and R2 (area 41-46) and R3 (area 3 – 8). See the attached telegrams.
In addition check variables for the IEEE-area (see chapter 5.2) have been defined. The IEEE-area is part of what -
according to UIC 556 [2] – is called national reserve area and has no predefined check variables.
The sinktime supervision will be set to 128ms.

Requirements for interoperability:
Interoperable vehicles must also apply the check variables according to Comet V cab and trailer cars and ALP46
locomotives.
The sinktime supervision shall be set to 128ms.


4.1.2    Vehicle Level

Implementation on Comet V/ALP46:
On Comet V/ALP46 locomotives the Gateway and the VCU exchange lifesigns.
 If the lifesign from the Gateway to the VCU freezes, a fault message is generated and indicated to the engineer.
   Export and import of WTB data is stopped.
 If the lifesign from the VCU to the Gateway freezes, export and import of WTB data is stopped. Any other
   Bombardier vehicle in the train consist is informed since the check variables (see chapter 5.2) are set to “0”.
   (In addition diagnostic data of the failing vehicle can not be uploaded via WTB.)

Requirements for interoperability:
A similar implementation is recomended, but there are no restrictions on interoperable vehicles.


4.1.3 Signal Level
See 4.1.1 for information about signal level monitoring.


4.1.4    Monitoring function affecting the inauguration

Implementation on Comet V/ALP46:
As specified by UIC 556 [2], the Comet V/ALP46 uses certain functions to influence the train inauguration. There
are Control Process Variables for the VCU to control:
 Operational mode: As long as the Gateway is activated (battery power on) it is in the “active” mode, no other
    mode is supported.
 Leading Request: The vehicle becomes leading master, if there is not already an UIC master.
 Allow / Inhibit new inauguration: Lengthening of train is inhibited as long as a cab is occupied.

Requirements for interoperability:
Interoperable vehicles must provide the following UIC 556 [2] specified functionality:
 Operational mode: active
 Allow / Inhibit new inauguration: Inhibit is set if a leading vehicle is defined

If an interoperable vehicle has a cab it must be able to become UIC Master and therefor set:
 “Leading Request”


4.1.5    Fault Handling

Implementation on Comet V/ALP46:
The handling of DTN faults is specified in [6].

Requirements for interoperability:
An interoperable vehicle must also handle DTN faults according [6].


4.2     Timing

Implementation on Comet V/ALP46:
According to UIC 556 [2] each vehicle sends its telegrams every 100ms. Implementation on Comet V/ALP46
complies.
Requirements for interoperability:
Interopable vehicles must have the same timing as Comet V/ALP46 which is 100ms.


4.3     Leading / Trailing Vehicles
Implementation on Comet V/ALP46:
IEC 61 375 [1] defines the strength of nodes in the train consist.
On the Gateways of Comet V cab and trailer cars and ALP46 locomotives this is applied as following:
 all vehicles are defined as <weak masters>.
 There are no <strong masters> in any Comet V and ALP46.

Only a vehicle with a drivers cab can become a leading vehicle. Any cab activated after the leader is appointed will
not be able to send traction commands to the WTB.
The UIC numbering is done to the rules described in UIC 556 [2].

Requirements for interoperability:
If any other vehicles should be coupled, they are recommended to be defined as <weakg masters> or <slaves>.


5     WTB PROCESS DATA
The data transmission is separated in two principles defined by the TCN standard, the process data and message
data . UIC defines the processdata in R-telegrams and the message data in E- telegrams). This chapter describes
the R-telegrams.


5.1     R-Telegram principle
Every configured vehicle sends a processdata telegram with 128 Byte length. All telegrams are distributed to all
vehicles and received in their traffic store. The telegrams are marked with a code (R1, R2, R3), identifying the
sender (leading vehicles (R1), trailing traction vehicles (R2) and trailers (R3)). R-telegrams are distributed every
100ms (-> see 4.2 Timing). Exactly one vehicle at the time is sending to all vehicles. Each vehicle processes only
the information which are relevant for it, and ignores the remaining data.

5.1.1 Deviation from Standard
Not all signals defined by UIC 556 [2] are actively used, those signals are retained and reserved for future
extensions. Existing signal definitions will not be changed. Other signals, not defined by the UIC 556 [2] but needed
by IEEE 1544 [4] , are placed in the national reserve area at the end of the extended R-telegram descending from
byte 128. This area is defined by IEEE 1544 [4] for use in North American trains. This area shall be used introducing
new signals, using descending addresses starting at byte 128.
Signals needed for NJT, which are neither defined by UIC 556 [2] nor IEEE 1544 [4] are inserted as national
reserve defined by UIC 556 [2].
Note: The definition of this reserve in byte 105 to 128 as appendix to R3 is IEEE specific and is not defined by UIC
556 [2]. UIC 556 [2] defines this area only as R1 and R2 area.
The reserve area is defined as an R3-area which is sent in R3, R2 and R1 telegrams.
The reserve area also contains four bytes for multiptiplexing purpose.

5.1.2 Multiplex bytes
Four bytes in the area 115-118 are used for not time critical visualization information. Each vehicle sends ist own

5.2.5   Definition of datasets for multiplexing

Remarks:
-  All data will be transmitted after a new UIC inauguration. Additional transmit triggers can be defined for each
   signal (normaly on change). A cyclic refresh is not foreseen yet but can be implemented if needed.
-  Dataset 1..9 (Comet V) and 100..103 (ALP46) are defined here, dataset 10..99 and 104..254 are spare for
   future use.
-  Grouping of data is done that dynamic data (GPS Position, door state) are separated from „nearly static“ data
   like device main states.
-  The signals are transferred in the 32bit R3-area in byte 115-118. All signals are imported as SDF-Direct.
