Project Overview
As part of the legacy benefit of hosting two international boxing training camps ahead of the 2012
gam es hosted in London, C ardiff University will create, develop and aim to sustain a student
boxing as part of t he University’s sporting portfolio. The University will work with partners including
local boxing clubs and the Welsh Amateur Boxing Association (WABA) in order that qualified
coaches are recruited to provide expert guidance to the student members. T he students will
prim arily compete in the British University and C olleges Sport (BU CS) f ramework but also have
the opportunity to compete in other WABA or BABA (British Amateur Boxing Association) licensed
events.
The new project and the facility infrast ructure at the University will lead to a sustained
development centre for south east Wales delivering a program for WABA with a view to becoming
a regional t raining centre for both t he students and the boxing clubs and associations.
This is a completely new venture totally inspired by the Olympic Games and in Wales’ ability to
draw in International pre Olympic Games training and preparation. Both the University and WABA
are keen to em bark on a partnership to create a lasting boxing legacy for Wales as a result of this
pre gam es boxing activit y.
