Gospel Preaching
Why do we spend half
of our time each Lord’s Day
listening to preaching?
Gospel Preaching
1 Corinthians 1:18-30
“…it pleased God through the foolishness of
the
message preached to save those who
believe…”
Acts 2:42 (NKJV)
Worshipping And they continued
God Through steadfastly in the
Preaching
apostles’ doctrine and
& Hearing
His Word fellowship,
in the breaking of bread,
and in prayers.
Acts 20:7 (NKJV)
Worshipping Now on the first day of the
God Through week, when the disciples
Preaching came together to break bread,
& Hearing Paul… spoke to them and
His Word continued his message until
midnight.
1 Cor. 14:26 (NKJV)
Worshipping How is it then, brethren?
God Through Whenever you come together,
Preaching each of you has a psalm, has a
& Hearing teaching, has a tongue, has a
His Word revelation, has an interpretation.
Let all things be done for
edification.
2 Timothy 3:16-4:5
(3:16) All Scripture is given by inspiration of
God, and is profitable for doctrine, for
reproof, for correction, for instruction in
righteousness,
(17) that the man of God may be complete,
thoroughly equipped for every good work.
(4:1) I charge you therefore before God and
the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the
living and the dead at His appearing and His
kingdom:
(2) PREACH the WORD! Be ready in season
and
2 Timothy 3:16-4:5
out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort,
with all longsuffering and teaching. (3) For
the time will come when they will not endure
sound doctrine, but according to their own
desires, because they have itching ears, they
will heap up for themselves teachers; (4) and
they will turn their ears away from the truth,
and be turned aside to fables. (5) But you be
watchful in all things, endure afflictions, do
the work of an evangelist, fulfill your
ministry.
Gospel Preaching
Biblical preaching proclaims
and
explains the TRUTH of GOD
so that it may deeply affect our
SPIRIT and impel us to
respond in humble praise,
adoration
and obedience.
The task of the sermon
Worshipping each week is not only to
God Through teach sound doctrine,
Preaching but also to help us
& Hearing focus on
His Word
a fresh picture of why
God is the all-satisfying
Treasure of our lives.
His infinite power and glory in creation;
His Word, that upholds the universe and
Worshipping keeps all the atoms & molecules
together;
God Through
His knowledge, that makes the Library of
Preaching Congress look like a matchbox;
& Hearing His wisdom, that has never been and
His Word never will be counseled by men;
His providence, in which not a bird falls
to the ground without his awareness;
His authority over heaven and earth,
without whose permission the devil
can’t make a move;
His triumphs past, present, and future,
over sin and death and hell and Satan;
Worshipping His purity never to sin;
God Through His power to walk on water, cleanse
Preaching lepers, heal the lame, open the eyes of
the blind, cause the deaf to hear, still
& Hearing storms with a word, and raise the dead;
His Word His trustworthiness never to break His
word or let one promise fall to the
ground;
His justice to render all accounts settled,
either in hell or by the blood of Christ;
His patience, to endure the dullness
of our hearts and our arrogance;
Worshipping His endurance, to embrace the
God Through excruciating pain and sorrow of the
cross willingly;
Preaching
His wrath, that will one day cause
& Hearing many to cry out for the rocks and the
His Word mountains to fall on them;
His grace, that justifies the ungodly
through the blood of the Lamb;
His love, that led His Son to die for us
even while we were sinners.
Example
Matt. 13:44 – “The kingdom of heaven is like
Worshipping a treasure hidden in the field, which a man
found and hid; and from joy over it he goes
God Through and sells all that he has, and buys that field.”
Preaching We learn that we must see everything else
& Hearing as worthless compared to the surpassing
value of the kingdom of heaven.
His Word But is there more to learn?
Didn’t Jesus also want us to see that
it was JOY that drove this man?
Hebrews 12:3
Example
Phil. 1:20-21 – “…Christ will be magnified in
Worshipping my body, whether by life or by death. For to
me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain.”
God Through
Preaching Yes, if death were to take away all that
I love in this life, death would still be
& Hearing gain.
His Word
But also…IN THIS LIFE, Christ
brings me a satisfaction so deep
that, no matter the circumstances,
I will MAGNIFY HIM in my body.
This is the task of
Worshipping preaching:
God Through
Preaching To proclaim the Glories
& Hearing of Jesus Christ…
His Word
…as God has
Revealed them.
