 MOSES

Journey’s End
Joshua 1:1 - 5:12
Book of Joshua
 At the opening of the book:

    – Moses is dead

    – Joshua is Israel’s new leader

    – The 40 years of wandering are not yet
      complete
 Israel is camped east
    of the Jordan River

    – In the Plains of Moab
      across from Jericho

    – At Abel-Shittim (Shittim
      or Acacia Grove)
Crossing the Jordan
 God told Joshua that it was time for
Israel to cross the Jordan & take Canaan

 He gave the borders of the land
 Lebanon

Negev
        “From the wilderness and this
Lebanon as far as the great
        river, the River Euphrates, all
the land of the Hittites, and to
        the Great Sea toward the
going down of the sun, shall
        be your territory.” (Joshua 1:4)
Crossing the Jordan
 God promised to be with Joshua
 He encouraged him to be courageous
 God gave only one requirement - be
careful to do everything the law says
     Joshua 1:6-8
Only be strong and very courageous, that
you may observe to do according to all the law
which Moses My servant commanded you; do
not turn from it to the right hand or to the left,
that you may prosper wherever you go. This
Book of the Law shall not depart from your
mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and
night, that you may observe to do according
to all that is written in it. For then you will
make your way prosperous, and then you will
have good success.
Crossing the Jordan
 Joshua prepared to cross the Jordan
    – He had officers inform the people they
      would cross in 3 days
    – He reminded the tribes whose inheritance
was on the east side of their promise
       • Reuben, Gad, & ½ of Manasseh
Two Spies to Jericho
 Joshua sent 2 men to spy out Jericho
 The spies lodged in the house of Rahab
    the harlot
 The Israelite spies were discovered &
    reported to the King
 Rahab hid the spies on her roof
Two Spies to Jericho
 Rahab knew of the things God had
    already accomplished for Israel
    – Land promised to them
    – Crossed Red Sea on dry land
    – Defeated Sihon & Og

 She asked the spies to save her & her
    family from Israel’s attack
Two Spies to Jericho
 Rahab helped the spies escape through
her window using a scarlet cord
 The spies told her to bring her family into
her house & hang the scarlet cord in her
    window
    – No harm would come to those in the house
      of Rahab
Two Spies to Jericho
 The spies fled to the mountains
 After 3 days, they returned to camp &
    gave Joshua a report
    Joshua 2:24

And they said to Joshua, "Truly the LORD
has delivered all the land into our hands, for
indeed all the inhabitants of the country are
fainthearted because of us."
Crossing Jordan
 Joshua rose early & moved the people
    closer to the Jordan
 After 3 days, the commanders went
through the camp preparing the people
    to cross the Jordan River
Crossing Jordan
 The people were given instructions:
    – Follow after the ark of the covenant
    – Stay back 3,000 feet
    – Sanctify yourselves

 Joshua informed the children of Israel
    what was about to occur
    Joshua 3:13
And it shall come to pass, as soon as the
soles of the feet of the priests who bear the
ark of the LORD, the Lord of all the earth,
shall rest in the waters of the Jordan, that
the waters of the Jordan shall be cut off, the
waters that come down from upstream, and
they shall stand as a heap."
Crossing Jordan
 The priests stepped into the waters
    – The waters from the north stopped & piled
up back to a city called Adam
    – The water that was in the river flowed out
      into the Salt Sea

 The people crossed the Jordan on dry
    ground
(Josh 3:15) “…for the Jordan
overflows all its banks during the
whole time of harvest…”

During flood stage, the river
would have most likely ran 10-12
feet deep with a swift current
Memorial Stones
 God told Joshua to choose 12 men
    (1 from each tribe)
 These men were each to go into the
Jordan & take out a rock
 The rocks were to be taken to their camp
& set up as a memorial
Memorial Stones
 In the years to come, the rocks were to
remind Israel of how God had helped
them cross the Jordan on dry ground
 The rocks were set up at Gilgal
 Joshua also set up 12 stones at the spot
where the priests stood in the river with
    the Ark
Joshua Exalted
 God told Joshua before he crossed the
Jordan that He would show the people
    He was with him
 We see God’s word came about once
    Israel was over the Jordan
        Joshua 4:14
On that day the LORD exalted Joshua in the
sight of all Israel; and they feared him, as
they had feared Moses, all the days of his
life.
Events at Gilgal
 The people crossed the Jordan & arrived
at Gilgal on the 10th day of the 1st month
 God told Joshua to circumcise the sons
    of Israel
    – All men who had come out of Egypt had
already been circumcised but those born in
      the wilderness had not
    Time for Passover
 4 days after crossing the Jordan, Passover
was observed - 14th day of 1st month
 It had now been exactly 40 years since the
    first Passover
 On the day after, they ate of the land -
    parched grain & unleavened cakes
 Then the manna ceased
Journey Is Complete
 The children of Israel have now been
delivered from Egypt into the promised
    land
 They have endured a long & difficult
    journey
 God has been with them
 Israel is now camped
    at Gilgal

 The wandering in the Mt. Ebal

    wilderness is now
    complete

 The conquest of
    Canaan is about to
    begin
    Journey In Review
 God delivered Israel while slaves in Egypt
 They crossed the Red Sea on dry land
 God guided them to Mt. Sinai
 At Sinai God spoke a law & made a
    covenant with Israel
 The people promised to remain faithful

 They traveled to Kadesh-barnea & sent 12
    spies into the land
 10 spies brought back a bad report & the
    people lacked faith
 They were forced to wander in the
    wilderness for 40 years
    Journey In Review
 They defeated Sihon & Og - mighty
    Amorite kings
 Israel camped in the plains of Moab
 At Moab Moses died & Israel mourned for
    30 days
 Joshua was appointed the new leader
    Journey In Review
 Joshua then took Israel across the Jordan
 They encamped at Gilgal
 They were circumcised
 They observed the Passover
 They ate of the produce of the land
The remainder of the book of
Joshua tells the story of how God
