Subject: HP 5360A computing counter info sought
Message-ID:
Last weekend, I was given a boatanchor counter package of the
first magnitude that I'd like to find some info on. It's been
running for about five days now and seems solid and on frequency
within a few a few tenths of a cycle at 100 MHz so I guess that
the current NASA calibration sticker is valid after all. :-)
I'm curious as to the time base used. It appears stable as hell
even by todays standards. The vacuum cleaner sounding cooling
fan is a major plus, too! :-)
It's an HP 5360A "Computing Counter" with a serial number of
1136A00768. It's the only 12 digit nixie counter that I've ever
ran into. It looks to be of later 1960's or early 1970's vintage.
I'm guessing that this was a pretty serious counter for it's day.
I'd like to find a manual for it and the plug-ins. The mainframe
contains an HP 5365A Input Module with serial number of 1136A00775
and a 5379A Time Interval Plug-In with a serial number of 1136A00651.
I'd be interested in hearing any information of insight that you
might have on this beast.
thanks in advance,
nolan

it's Novice Gear related!

I did a little further digging, and besides crossing to the ECG/NTE 29 it
can be replaced with the 2N5886 which are about $3 from Dalbani
(1-800-325-2264) but they have a $25 minimum order. The 2N5886 has
thicker (0.060) pins which might be a problem if you have sockets....
but at that current, I would guess they are soldered in.
There are a number of Motorola transistors in that line that are a bit
heftier, but should replace what you have. The MJ11030 is a 90 volt unit
(but the gain might be too high). The 2N6274 is a 100 volt unit. The
2N6275 is a 120 volt unit.

Most of the problems with BAMA have been addressed by the networks
administrator at SBC. The number of simultaneous ftp connections has
been increased to ten and the latest version of the ftp software has
been installed. This should help those of you who have been beating on
an unopening door! No problems have been observed at my location using
IE 5.0, IE 5.5 or Netscape 4.7. IE users should be able to view DjVu

the fact that it is now Spring Break and the use of Napster is at an all
time low on the SBC servers. :-) Do your downloading during the next

Hi,
Hallicrafters didn't seem to help with values of their "proprietary"
components like RF & IF coils, etc., that were made for their own
specific
applications. I checked the SX-101 mk2 & mk3 manuals, they use the same
coil,
but no values. The BFO coils for all the 101's are the same, and I think
also
the SX-100's too. So one from a junker may not be too hard to find. I
had a
101 junker about 3+ yrs ago, it supplied that coil for someone else.
How has it "gone bad?" Mechanically, or electrically?

Well Don, Mike and everybody interested, I wonder if it is available on
VHS tape? Often, obscure films from many years ago are in the public
domain
as a result of the copyright not being renewed or otherwise owned by
anyone. I'm guessing "Everybody's Hobby" is such a film. I haven't
searched for one yet, but I bet there likely is a company who specializes
in selling tape copies of such P.D. films. So, if Turner doesn't actually
own the rights I wonder if they could provide the supplier's name? Or,
more
plausibly, it is simply an old print Turner obtained with a bunch of film
libraries they'd bought over the years and they show it because of its
apparent oddity to modern-day non-ham observers. Anyway, it is something
I'd like to see but have the wrong work/sleep schedule to catch it during
the wee hours as Don recalls of the last showing.

The number 69-206 is probably the inverter manufacturer's part number.
Motorola will custom mark parts on high quantity orders. 8413 is a date
code, 13th week of 1984. I have several 12 and 24 volt inverters that use
the Motorola MJ11032 transistor which is rated at 50 amps, 120V, 300 watt
dissipation (proper heatsinking of course). Hope this helps

In the 1960's timeframe of the ARRL handbook was a electronic T/R
circuit.
Johnson made one for a
while and B&W made a copy of the handbook circuit. Many complained that
it
was a
TVI generator and a dummy load for the receiver.
I have been looking at the circuit and thinking of how to modify it to
give a
bit more amplification for the receiver and better filtering.
Oh yea could even sand state it but all the boatanchors would go belly

Anyone got any comments?

Sounds like an interesting project. I used the Johnson version with a
Ranger/Thunderbolt combination for a VERY short time. My problem was
with the noise generated by the mercury vapor rectifiers in the T-Bolt.
When the amp was off, it worked like a champ with the timed-sequence
keying in the Ranger. I don't remember it as a dummy load for the
SX-100. It seemed to have plenty of gain...certainly unity at least.
I'm sorry I parted with it many years ago. After I put 3B28s in the
T-bolt, it would have probably done OK.

Bill -
I used an electronic T/R switch for several years in the 60's. The one I
used was designed to be mounted inside the transmitter, getting filament
and
plate power for the 6AH6 from the transmitter supply, and tapping off the
PLATE side of the Pi-net through a very small coupling capacitor. The
suggested coupling cap was a piece of coax. It's claim to fame was that
it
had one of those "new-fangled" toroid transformers and was broadbanded,
so
no seperate band switch as in the B&W unit. Also, by putting it inside
the
transmitter and behind the pi-net, the TVI problem was also greatly
reduced.
I lived in a non-cable area at the time and had no problems with TVI.
The unit was very small, about 1.5" square and maybe 2.5" high, with the
tube sitting on top. There was a "hole" in the top of the box, rather
than
a connector,to insert the stripped end of a piece of RG-58 to run to the
station receiver. Sort of like the internal coax connectors in the TR-7.
The disadvantages were that the transmitter pi-net had to be tuned when
you
were just roaming the bands, sort of like a receive antenna tuner. And
of
course the shot noise from the final if it was not biased to cut-off in
standby.
I used mine in my Globe Chief 90, so didn't have to worry about noise
from
mercury vapor rectifiers! :-)
This is all from memory, but I believe this switch was manufactured by a
W3,
maybe W3DM??. I also believe it was written up as a construction project
in
QST, and the toroidal transformer was offered by W3??. I know that at
least
the schematic was in QST. The basic circuit was the same as the Johnson
T/R
switch, i.e., a tube pre-amp in front of the receiver that was biased off
by
RF. I'm pretty sure it was rated for up to a kw, with smaller coupling
caps
as the power went up.
I have a couple of the Johnson T/R switches, and the key to using them is
to
mount them right at the transmitter, (I used he-to-he UHF connectors,)
and
to sure they get plenty of air around them as they _really_ get HOT.
(Although I've never had one fail or show signs of being "overheated".)

I've been using the EF Johnson T-R switch for several years now.
The 6SL7 does provide some receiver gain, but it's still possible for
the transmitter (when connected to the coax connector) to "suck
out" as they used to call it, some of the received signal. Since I
don't do much weak signal/DX work, it's never been a problem for
me.
As to the TVI, yes, the EFJ T-R switch can make it worse if you already
have some TVI. For example, in my 'winter' shack, the ground system
is very close (4') to the transmitters and antenna tuner, so TVI isn't a
big problem. In the 'summer' shack, where the wire to earth ground is
22' long, TVI is a much bigger problem and I can cut it down a bit by
using a relay instead of the EFJ T-R switch.
I keep a muffin fan in top of the EFJ unit, sucking the heat out the top
and it stays nice and cool that way. Of all the things that should have
a rectifier tube replaced with S-S diodes, the EFJ T-R switch is one
for sure. I just haven't gotten around to do that yet, since the fan is
doing
a good job. Without the fan, it gets really hot and it has no fuses
(unless
you add one like I did) so I think it's not terribly safe in stock form.
The T-R functional aspects are good and it allows QSK if you want it.

I couldn't stand it.... I had to look in my QST on CD-ROM for this
T/R switch.
It was described in an article in QST for June 1957, page 24. Author
was Samuel Sabaroff, W3DM. !! Believe me, my memory doesn't do this
sort of thing very often any more ...
The schematic is there, less a description of the "carefully designed
broad-band transformer utilizing a selected core." I must admit there
is no mention of the transformer being of toroidal design, so might
have missed there. Also, the coax to the receiver was specified as
RG-59 rather than 58, probably because 59 had a solid center conductor
that worked better with their "connector" system. Kinda like RG-6A
today... Even has a description of using RG-8 for the coupling
capacitor to the final tank.
There's even an ad on page 173. $11.95 (with tube.) And yes, it IS
a 6AH6.

On the present two wire cord on my HT-32 transmitter the white colored

I'm not understanding the reasoning here. Maybe someone on the list can
explain it to me. I'm wanting to replace this cord with a three wire

I've always assumed the green wire is tied to the chassis directly, the
white wire is considered the neutral and is tied to the wide blade on a
polarized plug, and that the black wire is the positive wire and is the
one
that should be fused. If I follow that reasoning I'll tie the black wire
of
the new cord where the white wire on the old cord was. Not a big deal
but I
hope someone here can explain to me how the standards for wiring have
changed over time regarding two and three wire service cords.

Hi Bob,
I agree with your reasoning and have done it that way on several
radios,
incl the HT-32, that were "backwards". I'm sure there was some
reasoning
behind the original, but don't know, maybe it was different colors back
then.
On your bias supply issue, the original selenium rectifiers often
developed
a high voltage drop. I used silicon in the HT-32. Never heard them
being
blamed for the common power xfmr failures, have heard cautions to pause
in the
stdby position before turning off, to reduce spikes. My HT-32 has a nice
Peter
Dahl xfmr that the previous owner had bought but not installed, after
failure.

I think it is probably just due to the fact that it didn't matter which

Anyway, it's still a current product and as I recall the price direct

Subject: Hamfest report: NEAT boatanchor finds!!
Message-ID:
Hello all,
This is my 'annual report' of my observations of the Mike and Key club
hamfest in Puyallup Washington - probably the biggest ham fair in the
state each year. (To those not from here, that's pronounced Pew-AL-up)
I was actually amazed at the quantity and quality of boatanchor and tube
gear this year! The past few years at both the Mike and Key Club show
as well as the W7DK-radio club of Tacoma event, the number of radio
tables vs the number of computer surplus dealers has dwindled
dramatically.
I can recal a couple hamfairs where it was downright difficult to even
find
radio gear present, there was so much old computer junk.
Not this year! Literally TONS of boatanchors this year! I picked up a
beautiful all-band homebrew 12 tube all-band recever built into the same
cabinet used for SX-28's. Built totally with National components - all
the
coils, caps, knobs, even the tuning dial. Looks like it could have been
built by an engineer. I will have photos at my web site soon.
And the best part is it works perfectly! Even has a 4 stage crystal
filter!
All for only $40!
Also picked up a funny one - it's got to be the absoulute ugliest piece
of
homebrew I have ever seen! It's a hombrew linear with a pair of 813's
and self-contained power supply. It is SOOOOO hideous! It really truly
looks like the guy used a shotgun to make the holes for the parts. All
the
panel markings are made with a Marks-a-Lot marker on the bare aluminum
panel. He even labeled the meter with that big fat pen. Inside is a
HORROR!
The seller said the builder was a silent key - probably died trying to
tune
this
thing! But I had to have it for only $20 - the parts are worth 10 times
that,
and it will be fun to put lots of photos on my site of this beast.
My really neat find of the day is a cool little novice station completely
homebrewed
on aluminum chassis. VERY well built - especially the power supply. The
receiver uses a pair of 76's as a simple regen with audio stage and the
transmitter
uses a single 6L6. I have not tried it out yet, and need to check it
over
first, but
looks like it should all work great I should think. Very nicely built,
and
I got
it for only $20 for all 3 pieces. I will have photos of this outfit on
my
site as
well in a week or so as I get time.
I also bought several boxes and bags of NOS filter caps, coils and coil
forms,
and lots of little odds and ends - much of which cost almost nothing.
As far as stuff seen and not purchased: Seems Ebay pricing has attacked
hamfests
to a large degree - Collins S-line (32S-1, 75S-1, Spkr/Supply all winged)
$2200,
HQ-180 $550, Hallicrafters 6 meter transverter (TC-6?) $400 (!), and so
on.
LOTS of overpriced radios got packed right back where they came from.
But I
did see a really decent (grungy but workable) Heathkit SB-303 and SB-401
pair
for only $125 that didn't sell the whole day. I almost bought the set
several
times, but I just have too much Heath gear as it is, and I didn't feel
like
hauling
another heavy radio 1/4 mile to the car!
All in all, VERY good show with LOTS of boatanchors and parts. I was
very
impressed and pleased with the sellers - lots of folks were very
reasonable
and
will to help folks out, and willing to drop prices to get stuff to move.
Sorry for the long report! Keep an eye in the next week at
www.boatanchors.com -
I hope to have the pix there soon under the 'new stuff' link at the top
of
the
page.

Subject: TV-3 & TV-10 tube testers update
Message-ID:
The data collection continues for the TV-3/TV-10 "knowledge of the
ancients" project...
I just updated my TV3/TV-10 page at:
http://www.acadiacom.net/nlee/tv-3&10.html with the data I
have accumulated so far and what I'm still looking for.
I've laid out the basic design for the TV-3/TV-10 settings data
file. It will be very similar to the ones I've done in the past
for the TV-2, TV-4, TV-7, and I-177 series testers.
I suspect that there is published settings data a lot later
that what I have access to so I'm waiting before I start typing
everything in so I'm still looking for more settings data before
I start on the file. The latest roll chart that I have is May of
1966.
It also appears that all of the TV-3 and TV-10 series models
were different from each other, mechanically and electrically.
When I first started this project, I had zero experience with
the TV-10 series and assumed that there would be minor
differences as there are between the various models of the
TV-2, TV-7, and I-177 series, but it appears that the differences
are much greater than that.
I'm very curious about just how many TV-3 and TV-10 series testers
were built. They're scarce as hell in my neck of the woods and it's
very seldom you see one advertised for sale anywhere across the
nation. There isn't a whole hell of a lot of data known on these
models as far as production numbers. I suspect that the total
production numbers are probably much much lower than the I-177,
TV-2, and TV-7 series.
I'd appreciate hearing from any of you that own TV-3 or TV-10
series testers along with the information that is on the
nomenclature tag. We're attempting to put together a list on
these models with high SN's, etc. for each of the contract numbers.
What I need is the model, manufacturer, who built the meter along
with the info off of the meter face, contract number, and serial
number. Any addition info like date codes off of the internal
components etc. would be a nice plus.
So far, I know of the following contract data for the TV-3 and
TV-10 series. Let's fill in the blanks. :-)

Hello Fellow Anchorites
You Ranger owner/operators, learn from my nail biting experience. Suggest
replacing those bypass caps on the meter connections. If one on 'em
shorts
to ground, they could take your meter. Those ceramics are rated @ 1kv but
all of them are old & they have 700V+ no load voltage on them.
Thats just what happened to me Sat when I powered up my Turbo Ranger ll.
I
mean to say it blew the side out of a ceramic cap to meter can &
vaporized a
meter!??
I am now needing a meter for either a Ranger ll or Valiant ll. Its a
Simpson meter. Meter need not be pretty, just working. I can exchange

But as long as we are on the subject (mine was concerning CX), next

Alternative possibility on the delayed messages: if they were truly

Subject: FS SEVERAL TUBE AUDIO AMPS & PARTS`
Message-ID:
Hi BA Amigos
Am cleaning shop. I used to do a lot of audio restoring. But the
following
are like "rocks" that I will never do anything with. They need a
interested
home.
Have large shaker table tube amp (uses 6- 7027a or 6550s) & has one of
the
largest OP tfs I've seen. Pwr supply supplies 350V regul. & 500v for OP.
Rack mount made by MB Electronics. Z O.P. is right for speaker. Its big &
heavy. I powered it up today. I used 6 6L6G s to test it. It needs some
help
in the driver bd but it works. I sold all the 7027s some yrs ago. Was
going
to make a sub woofer driver with this beast. If interested lets talk. I
plan
on being @ Timonium HF end of month. Some neat things on this big
chassis.
And I have .jpgs.
I also have a pr of theater amps made by RCA. These use 4 6L6G s in PP
Par
driven w / pr of 6C5s. I have the documentation on this pair. They are
model
MI4288L. Are in restorable condition & both have linear Chicago OP tfs.
No
tubes supplied. Will take $150. for the pr. delivered to Timonium. Have
.jpgs.
Have a pr of RCA theater amps mod MI9358A. These are unique rack mount
amps
with tube balance meter in ft panel. Panel has shelf (?? really) w /
tubes
displayed / plugged into shelf. Ft panel / shelf folds down to get to
underside of chassis. You just got to see the pics. Would make a great pr
of
home theater display amps. Chassis on both are in good condition. Both
will
need complete rebuilding / modern circuits & tubes but tfs are good.
$150.
delivered to Timonium.
Have a pr of large linear OP tfs & pwr tf (a stereo set) suitable for
6L6GC
or 6550s. They came off an old Fisher 500C amp / tuner. TFs are clean.
Interested? Lets talk trade or cash.
And one more. Scott stereo Type-130 preamp (gold color) in good
restorable
condition. I restored one of these last year & was amazed at the clean,
linear audio it produced. I was'nt impressed w / what I got for my
efforts
after restoration. So I'm offering the preamp w / a parts Scott 130 to
make
one out of. The pwr tf in the clean one is ng. But the parts rig has a
good
one. I checked it today. And I have a Sams Photo Fax clear copy for
documentation. Asking $100. for the pr delivered to Timonium or shipping
extra. Have .jpg pics.
The Deal: Will trade on Johnson rigs, Rangers, Valiants, Navigators, or
parts thereof, or Collins 20V2 parts (good pwr supply chassis) or cash.

Message-ID:
I have a nice little Johnson Adventurer that desperately needs quite a
bit of the front panel lettering re-done. The problem is, as you know,
the lettering is done in a light green on both the maroon and the grey
parts of the front panel. I could repaint the front panel and use
commercial rub-on stencils except that I don't know of any that can be
obtained in "green." Most are white or black. Any suggestions?
Also, if I were going to repaint the front panel, how could I handle the
green Johnson Viking Adventurer logo in the upper left corner of the
front panel?
Maybe the best answer is for me to just wait and hope that the
Adventurer will be added to the list of rigs that are now being
commercially restored. Oh, well, if you have any ideas or suggestions, I
would love to hear them.
Thanks in advance es 73,

The Balanced Modulator transformer from any Swan tube radio will replace
that in the 260; so, it is not necessary to wait for one to be salvaged
only from a 260.
All the 5.5Mc radios use the same transformer. The early 5.173Mc radios
have
a slightly different inductance; but, will easily tune the 5.5Mc IF

Did anyone else happen to see the Collins external preamp for a 51S1 a
week
or so ago on that auction site? Last time I peeked it was up to $1500+
although I didn't see the winning bid.
Gary's speaker was definitely a bargain compared to what Collins
collectors
would have to pay on that auction site for a KWM-1 speaker.
Even though I didn't need one, my thanks to Gary for offering it to the

and
act like they are doing the list a favor. Phooey on those folks, hurray

The new address for my ham radio and boatanchor pages is now

The previous was

If you have me as a link on any of your pages, I would appreciate you

I had my pages at the same url for 6 years so it is going to take a bit

Hi Gang:
I have decided to further trim the pile a bit......
This is a very nice HG-108 VFO for the popular DX-60 series
transmitter. It is the later color scheme but should work with the DX-
60,
DX-60A and DX-60B models. Cosmetically if is very good - front panel is
excellent and the cabinet is good but would need a bit of touching up if
it
were to be perfect. Electrically it is original with no
modifications. The dial and the band switches are not overly tight but
the
VFO has sat around for many years and the mechanical parts should be
cleaned and lubricated for it to be as smooth as it can be.
There is also an external TR relay in the package with some connecting
cables. This relay derives its' power from the VFO and a power cable has
been attached to the plug in the FVO.
I am asking $85.00 plus UPS for the VFO and antenna relay. If interested
please reply by e-mail.

Message-ID:
Well, you must know I'm desperate or I wouldn't expose my abundant
ignorance so blatantly for all of hamdom to see!
I'm removing the front panel of my Johnson Adventurer and was making
great headway until the last knob (AMPLIFIER TUNING). It's held to the
shaft exactly as all the other knobs are, as far as I can tell. Each
knob has a small slot setscrew which threads into a brass insert in the
knob and then presses against the control shaft.
I removed the setscrew completely with very little trouble. (Didn't
mean to; just kept on unscrewing too long!) So then I assumed the knob
would come off as easily as the others.
WRONG. WRONG. WRONG.
I've used WD-40 and Hoppe's Lubricating Oil in the setscrew hole, let it
set for 30 minutes at a time, have tapped on the knob with a rubber
handled screwdriver until I'm exhausted, but the knob remains frozen to
the shaft.
Is this just one of those "you gotta wait 24 hours" situations, or is
there some way I can get this knob off...short of a hacksaw, that is!
The knob is just like all the others, but it's just not going anywhere.
I've applied quite a bit of force to it but it doesn't budge.
Any ideas? I'm just going to set it aside until you, my saviors (!),
rescue me once more! I guess this is all part of my learning curve, but
it's darn frustrating. Grrrrrr. *grin*

First make sure there are not TWO set screws(!)
I'm sure you already did that, didn't you? I have been folled before!
I don't know what that other product is that you used. I would start off
with some
"penetrating oil."
If you still can't get it loose, I would then see if you can get some
vice grips on the
SHAFT that will hold it firmly so it can't slip and THEN try turning the
knob.
If you still can't move it, you could TRY this
(Your on your own though, and I accept no blame if you bugger up the
knob!)
Take a SECOND set of vice grips and a rubber sheet like y use to turn
difficult jars in a
kitchen. Put the rubber on the inside of the jaws so you don't scratch up
the knob is it
slips. Turn the vice grips onto the knob but only moderately tightly,
using the rubber on
the inside of the jaws. Rock the rotation left and right very very
gentl;y and you may
see it get freed up.
You don't think the last owner WELDED it on there do you?
Nah.............

Congratulations Ron! Two things: I'd suggest that at some point the
setscrew may have slipped, creating a burr on the shaft. Remove that by
careful filing or sanding before reinstalling the knob. You may also
want to ream any roughness out of the knob bushing with an appropriate
drill bit, handheld.
And I'll say it again, the BEST penetrant I've ever used is Kroil, by
Kano Labs. It's only available direct, but worth the trouble.

Take a look at http://www.vacuumtubes.com/manuals.html
his home page says he's suspended business, but still selling manuals.
I haven't done business with him, so no opinion/recommendation, but may
get the
chart book.
I don't know if they're the same, but I can get the settings for those
tubes
from my Hickok 6000 for you if you'd like.

Try taking a look at the many resources listed at:
http://dmoz.org/Recreation/Amateur_Radio/Boatanchors/Manuals/
I have about 26 suppliers listed there (we need to add more!) but these
are ONLY the
ones that have a web page!
There are more suppliers out there. Maybe the AC6V site will list them. I
am not sure.
Another is ni4q at juno.com = Al Bernard, NI4Q - but I don't think he has
test equipment
manuals.

Fellow Hickok owners,
This is THE page for Hickok tube tester owners. Padgett maintains the
best
collection of Hickok info on the web. What he doesn't have on his page
he
posts a link to.
http://www.freivald.org/~padgett/hickok.htm
I've used his 600A calibration FAQ and found out my old Hickok is still
right on the money without any needed work.

Subject: Dial cord pullys needed
Message-ID:
Greetings Gang:
My BC1-J is coming along well now and it is time to start working on the
PA
deck. Missing is the entire mechanism to tune the exciter tank capacitor.
I
have rounded up most of the items that I need with the exception of a
small
pulley for the driving end, (something around 3/4-1 inch or so) and a
larger
one for the driven end (around 1.5 to 2 inches)
1/4" shafts please.
I've got plenty of room to work with so any two unequal pulleys will
work.
What have you got?
Thanks
