Making your decision
Choosing the degree which best suits your interests and ambitions
involves much consideration. What do you want from your
degree? A specific qualification or a degree that offers flexibility of
study pattern.
Before making this important decision you should speak to the
right people and consider the personal and financial implications of
embarking on postgraduate study.
WhO ShOULD I SPEAk WITh?
• If you are looking to progress your career through postgraduate
study you should speak with your employer about any
assistance they can provide. They may be able to offer financial
assistance and/or flexibility in terms of your work pattern.
• If you have a colleague who is in a position you aspire to, speak
to them about their study and career path.
• Speak with one of Macquarie’s Academic Advisers who can give
advice on your proposed pattern of study.

WhAT ARE ThE PERSONAL AND FINANCIAL
CONSIDERATIONS IN MAkING MY DECISION?
• If you have a partner and/or a family it is important to talk about
your plans with them. Postgraduate study involves a high level
of commitment and this may impact your personal life.
• While there is a financial commitment to undertaking
postgraduate study, many avenues offer assistance:

Chemical measurements are essential in many different fields such as
environmental, geology, medicine, biology. Important decisions are often
based on these measurements, for example, whether food is suitable
for consumption, goods can be sold, how a patient should be treated.
In addition, chemical measurements are often mandatory in support
of legislation (related to health care and trade), production processes
and societal problems. At present, the world of chemical measurement
is undergoing major changes on an international scale. International
free trade has meant that initiatives are being taken at the international
level and across measurement sectors to ensure measurement science
(metrology) issues are being applied in a systematic and consistent
manner. For practising analytical chemists, this means training in quality
systems and metrology is essential to ensure that the standard of chemical
measurements is within their international acceptance level.

career opportunities
There is a critical shortage of professionally trained statisticians in Australia.
Major sectors such as medical research and development are unable
to recruit suitable professionals. There are also career opportunities
in both public and private sectors. Key government agencies such as
Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO),
Defence Science Technology Organisation (DSTO) and Australian Bureau
of Statistics (ABS) employ statisticians to inform decisions, do research and
initiate discussion within the community and government. In the corporate
world, financial institutions and insurance companies require statisticians
to perform operation research, manage risk and analyse data for modelling
and forecasting.
