NCAA Basketball Tournament

One Chance, Win or Go Home!

There are currently 336 Division 1 Men’s College Basketball Teams in the

USA.

Each March 65 either win 1 of the 31 conference championships or are 1 of 34 teams

selected by an expert group to play in the NCAA (National College Athletic

Association) Tournament.

Unlike the NBA in which you have a possible 7 games to prove you are the

better team, in NCAA you get only 1 game. So your team had better be at there best for

every game in the tournament, if not, you lose, you go home.

Each of the 65 teams is placed in a bracket. (see chart on opposite page) Each

bracket consists of 4 groups of 16, 16, 16, and 17. In each bracket the teams are ranked

from 1 (the best) to 16 (the worst). To balance things in each bracket the best team gets

to play the worst team. (1 vs. 16, 2 vs. 15, 3 vs. 14…etc.) However even though the

experts who create this bracket try to make it so that the best teams will win as

expected, often a lower ranked team will beat a higher ranked team. This is called an

upset. For example if a team ranked 10 (worse) loses against a team ranked 7 (better) it

will be an upset.

Each year thousands of people try to correctly guess the outcome of the

entire 65 team tournament. Choosing or picking the winner of each and every game.

Many private bets (wagers) are made as well as betting online and at large casinos.

If you would like to join my group on yahoo sports and try your best to get as

many correct winners as you can all the way to the finals, please do so. The person who

joins and does the best of all the students in _______________ High School will be

given a Pizza Lunch by me sometime in April.

To join you first must go to this website

(http://tournament.fantasysports.yahoo.com/men). Then you must click ‘join’ a group. Next

you must click ‘Join Private’. After that you must create a Yahoo ID. Finally you

must enter in the group ID Number # (94060) and password (nmsu).

Notes for teachers:
