Cipriani S up February 2008

A publication of the Cipriani Elementary PTA

Principal Ingredients March 1 is the Dinner/Dance

By Lisa Zachry, Principal here are just some of the great

items up for auction:

“When in doubt, tell the truth.”

Mark Twain • Fire Truck Ride

Our character trait for the month of February is • Tickets to Six Flags

trustworthiness. People who are trustworthy tell the truth • Military Tank Tour

and keep their promises. They have the courage to do the • Weekend in Sonoma

right thing, even if it means getting into trouble or losing See More Inside

an opportunity. Trustworthy people are also loyal - they

stand by their family, friends and country.

You can reinforce our theme at home this month by talking with your child about what it means

to be an honest and trustworthy person and why it is important. Make sure he/she knows that it is

important to you. Remember, you are your child's most important teacher. He or she will learn a

lot about being trustworthy from watching what you do.

This month, we are going to celebrate Take Your Family to School Week from February 11th to

February 14th. Help us kick off the week by joining us at our Monday Morning Meeting at 8:25

on February 11th. Then sign up to visit and help in your child’s class.

Join me in the library for coffee on one of the following mornings:

• K/1 Coffee: Monday, February 11th at 8:45

• 2/3 Coffee: Wednesday, February 13th at 8:30

• 4/5 Coffee: Thursday, February 14th at 8:30

Our PTA meeting will be held on Wednesday, February 13th at 7:00 p.m. Julie Oeser, our speech

and language pathologist, will be on hand to present information about speech articulation in the

early years. We hope you can attend!

Some brief reminders:

• There will be no school on Friday, February 15th. All teachers will be attending a staff

development on writing and mathematics.

• School will be closed the week of February 18th through February 22nd for Mid-Winter

Break.

Updates

Food for Thought

By Karen Werner, PTA President

The PTA, originally known as The National

Congress of Mothers, was founded by Alice

McLellan Birney and Phoebe Apperson Hearst in Washington, DC on February 17,

1897. In honor of this event the National PTA is launching “Take Your Family to

School Week” the week of February 11th. During this week, please join Mrs. Zachry

for morning coffee, come by for a visit or to help in your child’s classroom. We have

also moved the PTA meeting to this week and hope that you’ll join us for a short

business meeting and then a presentation by Mrs. Oeser, our speech/language

specialist. In addition, that night we’ll have many of the classroom auction projects on display

for viewing prior to the auction on March 1st. More information on “Take Your Family to

School Week” will be distributed as the time nears.

On another note, we are starting our search for next year’s board. If you are interested in holding

an office, please let Helen Geimer or Teri Delgadillo know. Being involved in the PTA at

Cipriani has been a fun experience for me, and I’ve made a lot of friends along the way. I hope

we’ll see many new faces next year on the board or as committee heads!

Notes from the Secretary

By Jill Bauer

I have two items for your attention:

• The cold and flu season has definitely arrived at Cipriani! Now is a good time to start

reminding your child(ren) about how important it is to always wash their hands, cover their

mouth when coughing and sneezing, and to keep their hands away from their eyes. Parents,

please keep your child home if they are sick! Sending your child to school when they are

feeling poorly will only result in my having to call you to pick them up.

• Registration for siblings begins on Monday, February 25th. I’m requesting that parents come

in to pick up the forms AFTER 8:45am in the morning (it’s so hectic at the start of the school

day!) This year, I’m asking that if you pick up your forms on Monday, to please plan on

returning them Tuesday AFTER 8:45am as I won’t be in on Monday to process the

registration. Please feel free to call me with any questions.

Welcome to Mrs. Hawkins

Updates

You may have noticed a new teacher at Cipriani School. Jann Hawkins joined our

staff in January and is co-teaching first grade with Mrs. Snelling. Mrs. Hawkins

may be new to our staff, but being the parent of three Cipriani students, she is a

familiar face on campus.

Mrs. Hawkins was born and raised in Alaska, living in communities ranging from

the big city of Anchorage to small Eskimo villages. She met her husband Robb

during her university years. They have three children: Shelby, Holly, and Charlie.

Naturally, Mrs. Hawkins loves to read and in Alaska, she taught the Success for All

reading curriculum in grades K to 6. In her spare time, she loves to sew and enjoys

making quilts. She developed a love of music during her elementary school violin

lessons and played the violin with Anchorage’s City Junior Youth Symphony.

The Hawkins family moved to Belmont in April 2007 and immediately became involved with our

school’s PTA. We are excited to include Jann as a part of our Cipriani Staff!

Gooey, Messy Fun Art in Action

By Nannette Mahar, AiA Site Coordinator

Gooey, squishy clay. Sticky, messy starch. What could be more fun for a kid than getting to roll

up her sleeves and try using some new art materials? In January our second grade classes

experimented by adding starch to paint, then using the thick material to fingerpaint a self-portrait

based on Vincent Van Gogh's work. Our first graders were busy rolling and pounding clay to

make animal creatures. Third through fifth grades, meanwhile, used pastels to create their

masterpieces based on artists Ghirlandaio and Marc.

Look for the works of some of our third grade artists to be on display at the San Carlos Library

through mid-February.

Updates Cipriani Library News

Mrs. King

You may not be aware of the Parent Section in the Cipriani

School library.

Every parent can check out books, videos and DVDs to enjoy at home. The

section covers a wide range of services and subjects that a parent would find key

in helping their children. Here are a couple of the titles we have available:

• Helping Your Child with a Foreign Language by Opal Dunn

• 365 TV-Free Activities by Steve and Ruth Bennett

• Drama of the Gifted Child by Alice Miller

• Mom’s House, Dad’s House by Isolina Ricci

• First to Worst(DVD) by The Merrow Report

I hope this gives you an idea of the books, videos and DVDs we have for the parents of the

students at Cipriani. Every parent may have a Cipriani Library Card. Just come in between 9:15

and 2:15 and I will make you a library card so that you can take a look and check out an item.

What is a CIP BOOK? This is a book that has no due date and can be kept until the student

finishes it. If you have any books on your shelves that are labeled CIP BOOK, and your child has

finished reading it, please return it to the library.

The library wish list:

• Any Children’s periodicals in good condition.

Subscriptions that would be great for the library:

• Dogs for Kids

• Sports Illustrated

• Disney Adventure

Project Wee Care

By Nancy Jung

Brrrr! January sure was cold but thanks to your help, many of San Mateo's

neediest residents now have warm coats and blankets. February's theme is

"men's work clothes". This is Samaritan House's greatest need and largest

shortage! Please give blue jeans, sweaters, tee shirts, sweat suits, etc.

Please have your child bring your donation to school and place in the collection bin in each

classroom. DONATIONS ARE NEEDED BY WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 13! Samaritan

House will pick up the donations by noon on Thursday, February 14 . Thank you for your

support!

Print Cartridge and Cell Phone

Recycling

By Barbara Tallent

Don’t forget to bring in the printer cartridges and cell phones for recycling. The

school earns funds for recycling these items. Our vendor pays a varying amount

for each item, but don’t worry about whether they will take it or not, they recycle

everything we send. www.thinkrecycle.com

Cipriani eScrip Earnings Report

By Jennifer Fisher

Cipriani has raised over $8,600 in net contributions from the eScrip program in the past 12

months, and every cent of that money goes directly to the PTA to support many wonderful

programs for our teachers and children.

Now – imagine for a moment if every participating family asked just ONE friend, neighbor, or

relative to sign up for eScrip and support Cipriani? We could DOUBLE this amount. Think of

what we could do… more field trips, assemblies, books, equipment and supplies! And the best

part is, it is EASY and FREE to sign up. Here’s how:

1. Go to www.escrip.com.

2. Enter Cipriani’s group ID# 140657569

3. Click on “Sign Up” (Be sure to have your grocery loyalty cards, credit card numbers

and debit card numbers handy.)

Please share this information with your family and friends TODAY!

Questions? Please contact Jennifer Fisher at 592-3788 or jendavefisher@comcast.net.

Please support our eSrip merchants:
