Cia: Good morning everybody. Our class assembly is about setting and
achieving goals. We all need to have goals in life, but they are not
always easy to achieve.
Samar: Today's assembly will show that it pays to persevere when we
face obstacles and difficulties, even when we feel like giving up.
Savannah: But first, before we continue… Do you even know what the
word ‘goal’ means? And, no, we’re not talking about the football kind of
goal! In the dictionary, the word ‘goal’ is defined as ‘anything aimed at or
wished for’.
Mia: In Year 4, we had to come up with our own personal goals. Some of
our goals were academic, like improving our handwriting, reading more
challenging books or knowing all of our times tables, not just with
accuracy but speed as well.
Daniella: Some of our goals were social as well. For example, some of
us shy girls wish to participate more in class or to join a new club after
school.
Izzy: Wait a second, what about the word ‘persevere’? What does that
mean again? Do any of you guys know?
Popi: I know. I remember having to learn that word for my spellings. To
persevere means to persist in anything undertaken; to maintain a purpose
in spite of difficulty, obstacles, or discouragement. Pretty much, it means
to never give up trying on what you want.
Zahra: Hey, have you guys heard of The Guinness Book of Records? It’s
a book is full of examples of people who set themselves goals and
persevered until they fulfilled their ambitions.
Cordelia: I’ve heard of it! I actually got that book last Christmas. It’s
amazing! For example, I read that the oldest person to climb Mount
Everest is a man called Min Bahadur Sherchan from Nepal. He climbed
Everest on May 25, 2008, at the age of 76 years and 340 days.
Gulfara: Wow, that’s a huge goal! He must have really persevered until
he succeeded!
Cordelia: Just to help you understand these keywords of ‘goal’ and
‘perseverance’ we are going to perform a short play titled ‘Leo the Late
Developer’.
Cia: Leo is a lion cub who is trying to achieve the goals in his life. You
can all help by showing your sympathy when he fails by saying 'Ah' and
encouraging him when he succeeds by clapping. Okay?
Narrator (Izzy): Leo the lion lived with his Mum and Dad. They were very
proud of their only son. Soon the time came for Leo to join the other cubs
at school. He was very excited. But somehow, although he tried very
hard, he just couldn't get things right.
Narrator (Izzy): When the cubs had roaring lessons, this is what
happened.
Lion Cub 1 (Popi): ROAR!
Lion Cub 2 (Zahra): ROAR!
Leo (Cordelia): Meow!
Audience: Ah!
Narrator (Izzy): When the cubs learned to skip:
Lion Cub 1(Popi): (skips perfectly)
Lion Cub 2(Zahra): (skips backwards and does tricks.)
Leo (Cordelia): (gets tangled in the rope.)
Audience: Ah!
Narrator (Izzy): Leo’s parents were beginning to worry.
Dad (Gulfara): I'm worried about Leo.
Mum (Mia): It's alright, he's just a late developer.
Narrator (Izzy): But Leo still struggled. The other cubs learned to read:
Lion Cub 1(Popi): I'm reading Harry Potter
Lion Cub 2 (Zahra): I can look up words in the dictionary.
Leo (Cordelia): (holding a book upside down) OH!
Audience: Ah!
Narrator (Izzy): Soon they were using scissors:
Lion Cub 1(Popi): (cuts a perfect triangle)
Lion Cub 2 (Zahra): (holds up a cut out flower)
Leo (Cordelia): (drops a handful of scraps to the floor) OH!
Audience: Ah!
Dad (Gulfara): I really am worried about Leo!
Mum (Mia): Don't worry, he's just a late developer!
Narrator (Izzy): But even though Leo was finding school difficult he didn't
give up. He was determined. After school each day he would practise,
until one day:
Leo (Cordelia): (skips perfectly) I've done it.
Audience: (claps)
Leo (Cordelia): (reads from a book) I wandered lonely as a cloud
Audience: (claps)
Leo (Cordelia): (cuts with scissors and then opens out a concertina of
people holding hands)
Audience: (claps)
Leo (Cordelia): ROAR!!!!!
Mum (Mia): I told you he was just a late developer!
Samar: In life we all face challenges. Sometimes we need to be like Leo
and keep on trying even when we find our goals difficult to achieve. We
can help each other, by encouraging our friends to keep going when
things are hard and congratulating them when they succeed.
Savannah: Remember … to think about setting and achieving goals. Try
making up some of your own academic and social goals today.
Mia: Remember… to appreciate the achievements of others. Try to be
positive and supportive to all of your friends and family.
Daniella: Remember… to think about persevering when you feel like
giving up. Try to think of this song to help you.
