Examine the indicator_inventory
(p:\kidYYYY\indicator_inventory.xls) and determine (via
emails or phone conversation) that primary analyst contacts at
DHSS and DSS remain the same. If not ascertain replacements.
These are the two primary agency contacts for data who will in
turn farm the request out to the respective analysts. On
approximately May 15th, YYYY (this is dependent on the
decision that indicators remain constant as determined by the
KCM Advisory Committee), data orders are sent to DSS and
DHSS (see p:\tanna\kidYYYY\Data Orders\.
Some more unique variables: SED, Accredited Childcare,
Licensed Childcare, Unemployment, Immunization, Lead
Poisoning, LEP, as well as population estimates by age and
minority status should be ordered independently.

These are the files used to
produce the maps.
For Mo Senate Districts 4-5 and 8-11 order outcome
measure data by zipcode. Zipcodes are determined
by applying MABLE/Corr useing zcta5 as the
source code and senate district as the target.
Then a two step allocation is applied to “refine the
estimate” for these districts.
At this point all updated graphics should be created,
ie, the left header which indicates the year of the app.
Also, any footer changes made as necessary.
Using uexplore, download the outmasterYYYY and
factmasterYYYY sas files and save as excel files.
These are to be posted in the data download section
of the website.
Composite county ranks need to be calculated and
sent to CMC.

These programs drive the kidscount.sas program located in /pub/websas/ The programs are located in
/pub/data/indctrs/kidscnt/reports_graphs directory. All need to be edited to point to new graphics.
Reports2 and Graphs2 need to be edited to add in the current year for both single year indicators and
moving averages. The kidscount.sas program also needs to be edited to reflect new graphics images.
Caution: Insure that the directory to which the program is sending the data files in kidscount.sas points to
/temp until it goes public at which time it should be changed to /data
Generation of PDF county pages
P:/tanna/kid2004/Pagemaker/template.pmd
Click on the R at the lower left-hand side of
the page and edit the years of the data.
Click back to page 1 and Click Window,
View Plug-ins palette, then select data
source.
The data source consists of a combined factmaster
and outmaster file including the county seat and
county rank. The county seat can be obtained from
the previous year databaseYYYY.csv file. The excel
file must be exported as a csv. In Pagemaker use the
text icon to hi-lite the variables in > and then
click on the variable in the csv file that you want to
appear at this place. Methodically continue thru the
entire page. Make sure all variables have been
assigned a variable from the csv file. If even one is
not selected and assigned, Pagemaker will send a
message that “at least one variable has not been
assigned”, with no indication of which variable it
happens to be.
Next you are ready to merge records. Choose Utilities,
merge records. It will be necessary to divide the documents into
several files as Pagemaker will bomb after approximately 49.
St. Louis City will have to be done separately to delete “County
from the assigned field. Capitalize “City” in the .csv file.
When all of the Pagemaker files have been created, File/Export to
PDF format.
Other items to remember:
Change the date at the bottom of the Pagemaker template to the
current year.
When starting new merges ie, Adair-Reynolds have been created
and the next set of counties is ready to merge, go to File, Document
Setup and change the beginning page to reflect the correct page
number.
Data Validation Process
After outmaster and factmaster have been generated
All data (esp. data arriving in excel files from DSS)
should be spot checked against the original excel
spreadsheets for accuracy. In addition, at least three
different people should check the current years PDF
county pages against the previous years PDFs. Proc
Univariate statistics should also be run against
mocomaster immediately after it is generated.
Convene a luncheon that achieves the task of proofing the
draft county pages. Invite all analysts listed in the
indicator_inventory (these are in the contacts category
KCM).
