Study 3 The Choices in the Genealogies
by K. C. Ung
Study 1:
A. A COMARISON OF THE GENEALOGIES
1. Lessons from the Genealogy of the 1st Adam. Gen. 5:1 Cf. Lk. 3:38
2. Lessons from the Genealogy of the Last Adam – in or not in, the Gospels Matt. 1:1 cf. I Cor. 15:45
Study 2:
B. THE CHRIST IN THE GENEALOGIES or Lessons from the Genealogy of the Last Adam (cont)
1. The Genealogy of Jesus in Matthew – Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham. Matt. 1:1
2. The Genealogy of Jesus in Luke – Jesus…being (as was supposed) the son of Joseph. Lk. 3:23
Study 3:
C. THE CHOICES IN THE GENEALOGIES
1. The Choice of the Words.
a. With regard to Mary the Singular Mother of Jesus – of whom Mt. 1:16
i. The Change from “begat” (39 occ.) to “the husband of Mary of whom was born” Mt. 1:2-15 cf. 16
ii. The Consideration of the gender and number – “whom” is feminine and singular. Mt. 1:16
iii. The Clarification: Joseph was not the real father. Mary alone was the real mother.
iv. The Confirmation: Jesus was therefore born of a virgin.
It was Voiced out by Isaiah: Therefore the Lord Himself shall give you a sign; Isa. 7:14
Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call His name Immanuel.
Matthew Validated it as from the Lord Via Isaiah: Mt. 1:22, 23
Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord
by the prophet, saying, Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son,
and they shall call His name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us
v. Thro’ the virgin birth, Christ Circumvented the Curse on Coniah (Jechonias) Mt. 1:11; Jer. 22:28-30
b. With regard to Joseph, the Supposed Father of Jesus. Lk. 3:23
Jesus Himself began to be about thirty years of age, being
(as was supposed = as was thought) the son of Joseph. NRSV, NIV
i. Jesus was the Adopted Son of Joseph to inherit the throne of David via Solomon. Mt. 1:6, 7 See #1a
ii. Jesus Avoided the Curse on Coniah being the Actual Son of David through Nathan. Lk. 3:31
iii. Jesus could Ascend David’s Throne being his Real Son and of Royal Seed through Adoption. Cf. Isa. 9:6, 7
2. The Choice of the Names. Mt. 1:1-15
a. The Peculiarity of the Selections:
Verse Selected Omitted Lesson Ref
a. 2 Isaac Ishmael Faith vs. Flesh Gal. 4:22, 23
b. 2 Jacob Esau B Spiritual vs. Physical Heb. 12:16, 17

b. The Peculiarity of the Sections: Mt. 1:17
So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen (2–7s) generations;
and from David until the carrying away into Babylon are fourteen generations;
and from the carrying away into Babylon unto Christ are fourteen generations.
i. The Gems in Gematria – Matthew’s Genealogy has two natural sections: 1:1-11; 1:12-17.
ii. Both sections have numeric phenomena. Only the first section is dealt with here.
[The following gems are taken from Dr. Ivan Panin’s work. His work has been investigated by the
Nobel Research Foundation of Los Angeles, USA. They reported: “So far as our investigation has
proceeded, we find the evidence overwhelmingly in favour of such a statement.” Panin had claimed the
Bible could not have possibly been written except by inspiration of God Himself.]
The vocabulary to the first section (in the Greek text) has 49 words. 7–7’s
It is a multiple of 7 (7–7s), and the sum of its factors is 7 + 7 = 2 –7’s
Of these 49 words, 28 (4–7’s) begin with a vowel and the remaining 21 with a consonant. 3–7’s
Seven words occur in more than one form (1–7) and 42 in one form only. 7–7’s
Fourteen (2–7’s) occur once; 35 more than once. 5–7’s
The words have 266 letters
The sum of the figures is 14 (2–7’s) and the sum of the factors is 19 +7 +2 = 28 4–7’s
140 of the 266 words are vowels (20–7’s) and 126 are consonants. 18–7’s
[1in 1 million chances of the above happening!]
The numeric value of its vocabulary is 42,364 [E.g. MMIX, MMLXVIII] 6052–7’s
There are 42 nouns in the list. 6–7’s
Thirty-five (5–7’s) are proper names the other 7 are not. 1–7
The number of times these proper nouns occur is exactly 63 9–7’’s
The male names occur 56 (8–7’s) times and the three female names have letters totaling 14. 2–7’s
Only one city is mentioned and it contains seven Greek letters. 1–7
[1 in 600 billion chances of the above happening!]

3. The Choice of the Women:
a. The Mention of Four Women (excluding Mary) in Jesus’ Genealogy,
viz. Tamar (v. 3), Rahab & Ruth (v.5), Bathsheba (v.6)
i. This was Unusual in the Jewish custom of listing only males in genealogies.
ii. This was Ungraceful to the Jews in that all the four women would not be “acceptable” women:
three could be regarded as immoral (Tamar, Rahab, Bathsheba); one, racially unacceptable (Ruth, a
Moabitess.)
iii. But this was the Unity in Jesus for He shall save His people from their sins. Mt. 1:21; Gal. 3:27-28
Cf. For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor
Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ
Jesus.
In a list of Males (unusual) – Four were women (exc. Mary) - "neither male nor female"
In a list of Israelites (Jews) – The Females were Gentiles. - "neither Jew nor Greek"
In a list of leaders and kings – Some were Fettered to sin. - "neither bond nor free."
For He is our peace, who hath made both one,
and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us. Eph. 2:14
b. The Magnanimity of God’s Grace shown through the four Mothers in Jesus’ Genealogy,
i. Tamar, the Resourceful Mother –Perez and Zerah, whose mother was Tamar. Mt. 1:3
Her Tragic Past – She was a childless widow of two husbands. Gen. 38:7-11
Her Temporary Pose as a Prostitute because of a Promise not kept. 38:14-23
Her Triumphant Prospect
Tamar’s Conception – the Misjudgment and the Meted-out punishment. 38:24-26
Divine Condescension:
God’s Gracious Intervention: twins (Pharaz/Perez and Zarah/Zerah) were born to Tamar. 38:29, 30
The Gracious Inclusion in the Genealogies: Perez and Zerah, whose mother was Tamar. Mt. 1:3
Perez Became the most Prominent in the house of Judah, from Boaz to David. Ruth 4:18-22
The Blessing of Perez was the Blessing for Ruth and Boaz: Ruth 4:12, NRSV
Both genealogies of Jesus mentioned Perez. Mt. 1:3; Lk. 3:33
So is Tamar, his Mother - the Posed “Prostitute”- an ancestress of our Lord! Mt. 1:3
Zerah = shining or dawning; bright, scarlet. Gen. 38:30
Zerah was so Named because of the Nature of his birth Gen. 38:28
o Perez (= Break forth) Burst out first and Beat his Brother to it to become the firstborn. Gen 38:29
o Perez therefore became the first-born son whose name was then linked with all the genealogies
of Judah, although Zerah is mentioned along with Perez in the genealogy of Christ. Mt. 1:3
ii. Rahab, the Rescued Mother – Salmon the father of Boaz, whose mother was Rahab Mt. 1:5a, NIV
She Married Salmon and was the Mother of Boaz who married Ruth Mt. 1:5a
Boaz was in the Genealogies in I Chronicles (2:11, 12), Matthew (1:5) and Luke (3:32)
Boaz was a Godly landowner in Bethlehem of Judah Ruth 2:1, 4
Boaz was a Generous benefactor to Ruth. 2:8-19
Boaz was Gracious to fulfil his responsibility as the Kinsman Redeemer. 4:10-12
Rahab, though a Harlot, must have taught her son Honour and Holiness to be what he was!
iii. Ruth, the Redeemed Mother – Boaz the father of Obed, whose mother was Ruth Mt. 1:5b, NIV
She was Bought (Redeemed) by Boaz. Ruth 4:9-12
She was a Becoming wife to Boaz. 4:13a cf. 3:6-11
She was even a Better daughter-in-law than seven sons could be to Naomi. 4:14-16
She Became a mother through the good provision of the Lord. A son Obed was born. 4:13b, 17
The child was well-related to the Lord; Obed = worshipper or servant. 4:17
The child became the ancestor of David and Jesus. 4:17 cf. Mt. 1:5
And the Mother of the child was Ruth!
iv. Bathsheba – the Royal Mother – Solomon, whose mother had been Uriah's wife. Mt. 1:6, NIV
She was Uriah’s Wife forced to be a Widow by David’s intrigue. Later he took her as wife. II Sam.
11:26, 27
She was Uriah’s wife and she was David’s wife. 11:3; 12:24
David was faced with the Lord’s Displeasure and Bathsheba’s new-born child had to Die. 12:13, 14
In time Bathsheba Became a mother to four children. I Chr. 3:5
These were…Shammua, Shobab, Nathan and Solomon. These four were by Bathsheba daughter of Ammiel.
Through Solomon, Jesus was the adopted Legal heir to David’s throne through Joseph. Mt. 1:16
Jacob the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.
Through Nathan, Jesus was the Real Seed of David, as son of Mary and (as was supposed) the son of
Joseph. …the son of Nathan, which was the son of David. Lk. 3:23, 31
Thus, Jesus avoided the curse of Jeconiah (Jer. 23:28-30) on Solomon’s kingly line through
adoption by Joseph to inherit David’s throne, and at the same time He was David’s Seed through
Nathan, the son of David and the ancestor of Mary, to qualify to sit on the throne as David’s real Son.
This was made possible through the Lord’s Virgin Birth!
Bathsheba was an adulterous Wife, through God’s Grace she was Forgiven and she became
a Mother to Forward God’s plan of redemption through Jesus Christ.
Con. The last woman to be mentioned in the Genealogy of Jesus was Mary, the Mother of Jesus.
She was the only “perfect” mother among the four to give birth to a Perfect Son; thus:
This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about: His mother Mary… Mt. 1:18
Yet Simeon…said to Mary, His mother: "This Child is destined to cause the falling and rising of many
in Israel, and to be a sign that will be spoken against, so that the thoughts of many hearts will be
revealed. And a sword will pierce your own soul too." Lk. 2:34, 35
Simeon prepared Mary to be a Mother of Sorrows who would give birth to the Man of Sorrows. Isa. 53:3
