Cambodia

Cambodia is not little but big. Big in which it has many cities such as

Kampong Cham, Stroeng Treng, Sisophon, Batdambang, Pouthisat,

Krong Kaoh Kong, Kampong Saom, Kampot, Krancheh, Siemreab,

Kampong Chhnang. In order for this to be a country it has to have a

capitol. The capitol of Cambodia is Phnom Penh. Cambodia is

neighbored by the countries Thailand, Laos and Vietnam. The climate

changes when the different seasons come. Like it can be wet or dry

and the average temperature is 25 degrees Celsius. If you're afraid of

monsoons you wouldn't want to live here because Cambodia usually

has monsoons. Even though they get this kind of weather there are

many tourist attractions. Like there is the Angkor Wat, Banteay

Chhmar, Battambang, Kampong ThomKampot - Sea FoodsKirirom

ResortKratie - Dolphin, Mondulkiri - MinorityPhnom, Penh CityPreah,

VihearRatanakiri - Minority, Sihanoukville - Beach. Lots of good stuff

to see if you ever go on vacation. The area is flat, with many plains

and some mountain ranges in the north and southwest of the country.

There chief exports are rice, rubber, wood, wood products, garments

and rubies! The chief imports, are petroleum products, cigarettes,

gold, construction materials, machinery, motor vehicles, and

pharmaceutical products. Since this is a big country the population is

14 million people!

The people's ethnic background goes back a long ways. The Khmers are one of the

oldest ethnic groups in Cambodia. The Khmers are divide into subgroups. The

Khmer Surin are Khmers that lands once belonged to the Khmer Empire, but are

now a part of Thailand. The Khmer Krum are Khmers that lands also used to belong

to the Khmer Empire, but are now a part of Vietnam. Some historical events that

happened were that in the 600-1500's Khmer civilization formed, 1863 Cambodia

becomes a protectorate of France and part of Indo-China. The French colonial rule

lasted for 90 years. 1941-1945 Cambodia was occupied by the Japanese during

World War II, 1946 France re-imposed it's protectorate, 1953 Cambodia declares

it's independence and becomes the Kingdom of Cambodia, 1965 Head of State

Sihanouk breaks off with the US, 1965 North Vietnam guerrillas establish bases in

Cambodia pursing the campaign against the US backed government in South

Vietnam, 1970 Sihanouk is deposed, 1975 The Khmer Rouge, led by Pol Pot,

occupies Phnom Penh, 1975 Cambodia is re-named Kampuchea, 1976 The country

is re-tilted Democratic Kampuchea, 1977 War breaks out with Vietnam, 1979

January: Vietnamese forces take Phnom Penh, 1979 Pol Pot and Khmer Rouge

troupes flee to the borders with Thailand, 1979 the Peoples Republic of Kampuchea

is established, 1997 the Khmer Rouge put Pol Pot on trial and sentence him to life

imprisonment, 1998 Pol Pot dies.

The languages here is Cambodia/Khmer of course. So that is the language you

want to learn. The money here is Riel. The per capita income is $4,115. And

the religion here is Buddhism. The type of government that Cambodia has is

called Democracy. The education in Cambodia was traditionally offered by

the wats (Buddhist temples) which provided educational population. In 1975

the Khmer Rouge abolished education, systematically destroying teaching

materials, textbooks and schools. Schools and universities were closed and

then were used for other purposes. During this period large numbers of

qualified technicians, researchers, and teachers either fled the country or

died. When the new Cambodian government came to power in 1979 it had

to completely re-build the entire education system. The constitution of

Cambodia states the free compulsory education for nine years guaranteeing

the right to education. The education system in Cambodia still has some

issues such as low morale due to a low salary, lack of teachers, and lack of

suitable teaching materials. Attendance at schools in rural areas are low

because kids are expected to stay home and help with the fields. Cambodia

still has a low percentage of participation, only 1.2% of the population are

enrolled, compared to the average of 20.7% of other countries.

Some General information about Cambodia are(customs, family life,

recreation, etc.) Sadly this country is facing major deforestation

which is a problem for the people living there.
