Choir Notes by Cora A. Coo

This year marks my 10th Christmas and New Year at Eagle Rock Presbyterian Church. It has been a

decade of Learning for me. God gave me new friends from whom I have learned how to live beyond 90 and continue

enjoying each day- singing, praying, exercising, loving and trusting the Lord. In the case of Doris Thielen, who

sometimes is our only lady in the choir, besides inheriting good genes, she says she cooperates with God, doing her

part to keep healthy by taking care of herself thru’ proper food and exercise. I’m sure the love of family and friends

and filling the mind with beautiful thoughts help a lot too. Doris is an inspiration not only to me but to many others.

Being in her presence is so refreshing! Besides Doris, I remember Helen Sambor who used to be a soprano in our

Chancel choir. She’s about 2 weeks older than Doris- a very healthy woman too! And there’s Lorene Wilson… and

Elmer Lorenz. I think the rest of the folks at ERPC are younger, (or look younger!).

I’ve learned faithfulness and wise use of time from Alex Edwards. He comes to rehearsal by bus, rain or shine. Most of the time, he’s the first

one at church on Wednesday evenings, reading a book by the moonlight while waiting for the rest of the choir to arrive. He has also used his

creativity to write poems and songs. We will try to learn one of his songs for December. From

Carolyn Harris, I’ve learned cheerfulness, living with an adventurous spirit and how to lend a You are invited to

helping hand in time of need. For her, the choir has prayed the most for traveling mercies, as she Cora’s Christmas Concert

is the most-traveled. I’m sure her Mom never dreamed her 3 ½ lb. baby would be a world On

traveler! You inspire me too, Carolyn!

Saturday

Our new lady in the choir, Gigi Koteh, answered a call to ministry when she joined us. December 18, 2010

We certainly recognize your big help. Maraming salamat sa iyong tulong!. (Thank you very At 3:00PM

much for your help!) I admire Gigi’s patience and willingness to use her talents for the Lord. I

didn’t know her name is April and that she’s Rami’s Mom, and Tita Letty’s daughter, until about a year ago, although I’ve known her for quite a

while. When I learned that she has had thyroid surgery more than once and that her voice has gone down from high soprano to alto, I thanked

God for preserving her vocal cords in the surgery.

To Jon Longworth: I will always be grateful for having a piano technician and pianist in residence at our church. Aren’t we blessed to

have Jon with us? He not only sings in our choir, plays piano solos, once a quarter and tunes our pianos as needed. He also is our Worship

Committee chairman and our choir comedian. He always seems to have something to share that cracks us up. He certainly brings cheer

wherever he goes. May your tribe increase!

Benjie Buan has been singing with us since about the time Pastor Kyle became our pastor. What a big boost to our bass section! He

also sings solos, once in a while. If you remember, every time we had a joint service on Reformation Sunday, he leads out in congregational

singing, in the style of that period, showing with his hand the melodic shape of the song. He and his wife, Maritess, with their sons Kevin (in

Bible College), Matthew (V.P. of the Youth Group), and Trevor (our Jr. Deacon) come to the Classic service regularly, for which we are

thankful.

Among the men, Vern Koehn is the only one who has been with the group since I first came here. In spite of his health issues, he has

been a faithful member. He can be a tenor when needed, but most of the time he sings bass these days. Vern leads the choir in the evening

service, and is an active ESL teacher. He also has a ministry with the Koreans, once a week. He is the responsible lay leader of the evening

dinner ministry. He joined the Retreads, upon his retirement from work. I think he sometimes finds himself busier now than before his retirement!

Way to go, Vern! God will supply your needs, as you contribute to supply the needs of the church. I remember with a grateful heart, the time you

used to pick me up for choir practice and take me home later. And thank you to all the folks who join our choir to make it the SERAPHIM CHOIR

when we have joint worship services. Wish those times were more frequent!

If I enumerate all the people who have brought me encouragement, inspiration and helped me through the years, the whole New

Vision newsletter will not be enough to pay my tribute to each one. So, let me just tell you dear church family, that “I thank God upon every

remembrance of you.” (Phil. 1:3) Your smiles, encouraging comments, help in various ways and your faithfulness to God, have enriched my

life in the last ten years. Pastor Kyle, it’s a joy to work with you. You’re a super-organized person, with an eye for beauty! May this rub off on

me. God has brought you to us, in His time and we are thankful. Thank you to our veteran leaders- Bob Knott and Art Edwards, for all your

support. And to the choir’s friends and “admirers”-(Darline, Jenylle, Dona, Joan- to mention a few) You are one of the reasons, we continue

singing even when we are few! Of course, our main reason is GRATITUDE to the LORD and our DESIRE to PRAISE and ADORE our

MASTER MUSICIAN!

By the way, the sound system makes or breaks our music. Thanks to Rami Garcia and Ellery Atienza for your assistance, not only in

singing solos, but in making sure our songs are heard well, and will be heard by our shut-ins.

Surely, there is so much for which to be thankful! I look forward to the time when I can thank my Savior and Lord, in person for all His

gifts to me which includes You, my dear church family and friends! Lastly, Thank you Lord for JESUS, the REASON for the coming

SEASON. A BLESSED CHRISTMAS and HAPPY NEW YEAR to you all! Cora A. Coo, Music Director

“Tis the season to be jolly”

“’Tis the season to be jolly…” Why?

Why do we sing, give presents, celebrate?

What great event do we commemorate?

“’Tis the season to be jolly…” Why?

A time for children, for those with wondering eye—

“What marvelous gifts do we anticipate?

What wondrous person’s coming do we await?

What thrilling portent’s written in the sky?”

The shepherds heard a song; the Wisemen saw

A star. Rach came to Bethlehem and found

God’s promised gift—Incarnate Love.

The knelt and worshipped. We, too, in wondering awe,

Find Bethlehem within each heart God’s love

Has touched, in lives where grace and peace abound.

You may have noticed a lot of “sprucing up” around the church! The

buildings and grounds committee has been busy updating, repairing, and

maintaining the church property this year. We are very grateful for a generous

gift made by the estate of Charline Whittum, which has allowed us to make some

capital repairs and upgrades to the church property. There are MORE upgrades in

store for the coming year. We started in the parking lot area, more as an experiment

to test certain colors and concepts before we begin the upgrade of the front of the

church.

This year we repaired and updated the air conditioning system in the

sanctuary, purchased new awnings at the entrances of Montgomery Hall and the

Sanctuary to create a more welcoming appearance.

Buildings and Grounds Next on our long list of upgrades will be the Sanctuary interior and the

front of the church property. We are planning to repaint and lay new carpet in the

Sanctuary; that will be a big project and we may need to have worship services in

Montgomery Hall for two Sundays. We have LOTS of exciting and new ideas in the

works, so stay tuned and enjoy the ride!

Merry Christmas!

GRADUATIONS! Also coming up in 2011, FOUR of the members of our WESTMINISTER YOUTH FELLOWSHIP will be

graduating from High School! Congratulations Justin Salinas, Matthew Buan, Shayne Laurel, and Rochelle Lesigues!

Also, a good friend of our church, Christina Jensen will be graduating from San Francisco Theological Seminary in San Anselmo CA. The

Youth are planning a ROAD TRIP in May to attend “Pastora” Christina’s Graduation. Congratulations Everyone!

Our Seminarians: Noel Tatlonghari is completing an internship in Pacifica, CA and continuing with Biblical Languages at SFTS,

San Anselmo. Bong Bringas is busy with an internship at San Marino Community Presbyterian Church. Kevin Buan is completing his second

year of Bible College and was the stage manager (and chorus member) of a Christmas musical at Life Pacific College. Kevin also successfully

completed his Hebrew AND Greek requirements this year! Way to Go Kevin!

Every Sunday evening throughout the year, Eagle Rock Presbyterian Church has a full program of

activities for the local community. The programs officially start at 5:30PM with a Casual Vesper Service of Praise

Sunday and the Word followed by a Dinner Ministry to the poor and disadvantaged and the Westminster Youth

Fellowship. The volunteer programs actually begin around 11AM following the 9:45AM classic worship service.

Evening There are two teams that work to make the evening programs function successfully, Elder Vern Koehn

Ministries heads up the “Dinner Team” and Pastor Kyle heads up the “Worship Team” but everyone helps each other out.

Beginning after the 9:45AM Classic Worship, the Dinner Team gets the food donations from Trader Joe’s in

Glendale and after they get back to the church, they begin preparing and cooking the dinner. Every Sunday

night, the Dinner ministry feeds between 60-80 poor and disadvantaged people. Most of these people only have

this one meal of the day. Special thanks to Alex Edwards, Dirk Lowther. Sharon Radick, and Clarence

Hensley who help make the dinner. Students from South Pasadena High School and from our ESL Classes

also come and help set the tables, serve, and clean up.

While the “Dinner Team” is busy, the “Worship Team” is also preparing the Sanctuary for the guests

that arrive from around the community. People start to arrive as early as 4:30pm, just to rest and sit in the

Sanctuary as the musicians prepare for the worship. At around 4:45PM the dinner team takes a break and joins

“Uncle Vern” as he leads the high school students in a hymn sing. The students learn two “Old Tyme Gospel”

songs and present them as part of our worship experience. We affectionately call the group the “Trumpets of

Zion” and everyone has a great time.

Stephen Stewart leads our praise and worship with Rami Garcia and Matthew Buan. Pastor Kyle

teaches the Bible Study. The evening worship is different from the both morning services in that it is more casual

and the scripture study is taught like a class with each week building on the previous week. This past semester

we went through the Gospel of Luke and learned a lot of new and different things. Our Westminster Youth

Fellowship has taken on the Evening Casual Worship as a ministry and help with everything from setting up

the Sanctuary to helping with sound, lighting, ushering, music, and clean up after. Special thanks to the WYF,

Shayne Laurel, president and Matthew Buan, vice president and Trevor Buan, Paul Gamo, Danika Laurel.

There is always room for more volunteers all you have to do is to Show up and we will have a job for you.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
