Cambridge, United Kingdom – 19 April 2004 – Pico Technology, the PC-based test and
measurement company, has added a four-channel thermocouple converter (the EL041) to its
EnviroMon data logging system. The new converter accepts up to four thermocouples, can record
up to 250,000 readings and is expandable up to 40 channels.

Featuring built-in cold junction compensation (CJC), the EL041 has an effective temperature range
of -270 to 1820 degrees C (using thermocouple types B, E, J, K, N, R, S and T), is accurate to 0.3
per cent +/- 0.5 degrees C and has a resolution of better than 0.2 degrees C. It is intended for use
with the EL005 EnviroMon data logger, a unit which connects directly to a PC’s serial port or via
an adapter to its USB port.

Alan Tong, Pico Technology’s Technical Director, comments, “EnviroMon is an expandable
system and up to 10 mixed converters and alarm units can be networked to form an advanced
monitoring and alarm system. For example, EnviroMon can text a message to the user if and when
any of the temperatures being monitored reaches a critical level, or, using an automatic dialler, the
system can be configured to phone the user and play a pre-recorded message giving details of which
alarm condition has been reached.

Furthermore, EnviroMon can export recorded data to a web site. The data can be posted as graphs
in JPEG format and/or tables in CSV format. Tong continues: “This gives users anywhere in the
world the ability to view the temperatures. This is particularly useful if the users have just received
notification that an alarm condition has been reached.” EnviroMon can also be accessed via Internet
Protocol (IP), enabling users to view the data as it is being recorded – as well as giving them control
over the monitoring system.

Tong concludes: “The addition of the EL041 four-channel thermocouple converter to the
EnviroMon family has enhanced the measuring capabilities of the data logging system. So, in
addition to being able to measure temperature (with resistive sensors), humidity, voltage and
current, the system can now read thermocouple outputs to measure temperatures in the range -270
to 1820 degrees C.”

The EL041 is available immediately, retails for £199.00 (+ VAT) and is supplied with EnviroMon
software free of charge

About Pico Technology
Established in 1991 and based in Cambridgeshire, United Kingdom, Pico Technology is the market
leader in PC oscilloscopes: low-cost alternatives to bench-top and handheld instruments. The
company’s flagship instrument is PicoScope – a combined oscilloscope and spectrum analyser –
available with resolutions of 8, 12 and 16 bits, sampling rates of up to 5GS/s and memory depths of
up to 128k.

In addition, Pico Technology is the market leader in PC oscilloscopes for the automotive industry
and has developed a multi-award winning automotive diagnostic kit (comprising an ADC 212/3 PC
oscilloscope, current clamps, secondary ignition pickup as well as a range of test clips, leads and
probes) which enables automotive technicians to test virtually all electrical/electronic signals on any

The company also designs and manufactures a number of data acquisition solutions including the
PicoLog data loggers (ranging from 1 to 22 channels, and 8 to 24 bits resolution), the EnviroMon
PC-based and standalone data loggers, the education data logger DrDAQ, and a range of dedicated
PC-based temperature and humidity recording products.
