The Undergraduate Teacher Education Program (UTEP) at Harvard University seeks academically strong
and service-oriented students who are interested in public school teaching and committed to preparing for
the challenges of a career in education. This elective program combines coursework at the Graduate
School of Education and fieldwork in Boston or Cambridge public schools. Successful completion of the
program requirements and a passing score on the two-part Massachusetts Test for Educator Licensure
(MTEL) enable graduates to receive a teaching license at the middle or high school level in the
Commonwealth of Massachusetts and the states with which Massachusetts has licensure reciprocity.
Students must also fulfill all other degree requirements for the College.
Admission to UTEP requires an interview and a completed application packet consisting of a personal
statement, current transcript, two letters of recommendation, resume, and plan of study. The two-part
plan of study must explicitly detail how the applicant‟s coursework in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences
will fulfill the relevant subject matter requirements for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Successful
applicants demonstrate: (1) high academic achievement and knowledge in the subject area which the
applicant intends to teach; (2) a genuine commitment to public service and working with young people;
and (3) interpersonal qualities that mark the potential for a successful educator, including but not limited
to good communication skills, a willingness to embrace challenging situations, open mindedness, energy,
and enthusiasm. A committee of representatives from the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and the Graduate
School of Education considers applications at least once a year.

COURSEWORK INFORMATION
Please use the following information to assist you in filling out your Plan of Study:
UTEP coursework must be completed in two consecutive semesters, though the psychology requirement
may be fulfilled out of sequence. Students typically begin UTEP during either the junior or senior year. In
total, UTEP requires four courses (of which the practicum is one) and the pre-practicum, which is not for
credit.
Required UTEP Courses:
1. Teaching Methods (T-212 English, T-213 History/PSPP, T-214 Math, T-215 Science)
2. Educational Foundations (T-202)
3. Psychology Requirement (H-236, H-382, Psych 15)
4. Teaching Practicum (T-302A/B)
Each UTEP semester, students complete required fieldwork and required coursework. The sequence of
coursework depends on the semester in which students start. All students complete a pre-practicum (78
hours of classroom observation) during their first UTEP semester. The pre-practicum is not for credit. All
students complete a practicum (360 hours of teaching) during their second UTEP semester. The practicum
counts as a traditional half course.
See below for sample UTEP study plans** (note that these are not the only possibilities that
exist for fulfilling program requirements):

*Note Regarding the Psychology Course Requirement:
There are options to fulfill the Psychology requirement during both the fall and spring semesters,
leaving students with flexibility as to when they will fulfill that requirement. Note that the
Psychology course may also be taken prior to applying to UTEP or during any non-UTEP
semester. Currently, students wishing to be licensed at both the 5th-8th and the 8th-12th levels must
take one of the psychology courses offered at HGSE.
Notes about Required Coursework:
The Teaching Methods courses (T-212 English, T-213 History/PSPP, T-214 Math, T-215
Science) are only offered in the fall and thus must be taken during a student‟s fall UTEP
semester, whether that is the student‟s first or second semester in the program. Likewise, the
Foundations Course (T-202) is only offered in the spring.
Term-After Option:
In order to make UTEP accessible to as many students as possible, students may choose to start
UTEP during their final semester as a senior and then return to Cambridge to complete UTEP
using the term-after option. Students would still complete the program in back-to-back
semesters. During the term after, students receive special student status at HGSE. Please see the
UTEP website for further information about this option.
**Coursework for the Summer Option differs somewhat from the other UTEP options. Please
see the director for details. Also, those opting for the summer option can apply for summer
housing through Harvard.
