During my research I came across two publications that I found particularly
valuable in helping me better understand differing aspects of design. One is an e-
zine, Core 77, the other a print publication called Layers.
Core77 has been in existence for a long time in Web years – 15. It is geared to
informing a global audience of industrial designers ranging from those in training
to successful professionals. The ‘zine has a comprehensive events calendar and
provides numerous services in various ways. On one end there are articles, blogs,
and discussions, focusing on immediate topics. Also, for reference, listings of
design firms and accompanying job listings are provided. An added plus is is the
hosting of quickie design contests which give individuals opportunities to display
portfolios and promote exhibits.
I was particularly also interested in the numerous design festivals that they link to
around the world. The themes varied from toys, cologne, housewares, and more.
My personal favorite, a show at the Museum of Arts and Design, invited artists to
transform discarded, commonplace or valueless objects into extraordinary works
of art. I hope to view that exhibit as that is a genre I often work in. Overall this is a
fine site that engages, informs, and inspires the viewer.

Layers is a great publication that functions as a ‘how-to’ magazine for everything
Adobe. They are a goldmine of tutorials and features that all prove to be an
invaluable resource. For example, after Adobe launched CS4, Layers created
some 50 tutorials online for its readership, addressing all components from the
new Suite. They also run ‘design makeover’ contests, with individuals or design
firms taking up a design challenge. Informative ‘before and after’ shots are
shown. Recent published articles focused on designing specifically for the web,
composing in the viewfinder, and tips and tricks. The magazine is designed
cleanly, without ponderous prose. Text is wrapped economically around graphics.
This is truly a user friendly resource that I will be using for its wealth of
information and its ease in navigating.
