Planning 10: Gap Year Assignment

Individually or in pairs, create a travel brochure that both describes a country outside of

North America, and outlines a trip itinerary. Use Microsoft Word to put your brochure

together. Be sure to summarize the text in your own words, though you may copy and

paste images (as long as you document the website they are from). Make your brochure

colourful, creative, and interesting by using textboxes, fonts (no more than two), shapes,

images, etc. Step 5 is worth 10 marks, and 6-12 are worth five marks each for a total of

45.

Step 1: Go to the website: http://www.lonelyplanet.com/

Step 2: On the menu bar, click “destinations”.

Step 3: Glide your mouse over the map and select a continent

Step 4: Glide your mouse over the map and select a country.

Step 5: (10 marks) In the left-hand margin click on “Overview”:

 Briefly summarize the information, and be sure to include “when to go” (with

reasons why)

 Include a map (click “show map” tab)

 Summarize each of the following topics in 3-4 sentences each. Be sure to identify

each topic with a boldface title. Weather, Practical information, Work & study, Places,

Getting there & around, History, Tips & articles

Step 6: In the left hand margin, click “Things to See”, briefly summarize 3 of the topics,

identify each with a bold-face headline.

Step 7: View the gallery and copy 3-5 images into your assignment. If you use another

site for images, be sure to document it with the URL and date you accessed it. I.e.

www.anothersite.com (dd/mm/yy)

Step 8: Click “events” and summarize one event in your assignment.

Step 9: Click “Getting there & around. Describe what it says in the “Getting Around”

section. Be sure to include a boldface title for this section.

Step 10: Click “Practical Information” on the left hand menu and the “Money & costs”

tab. Include the “average room prices” and “average meal prices” under the “low”

category, in your table. Be sure to list both the currency of the country and Canadian

dollars (Use this converter http://www.bankofcanada.ca/en/rates/converter.html) You

may have to search other websites for this information.

Step 11: Figure out how many days you could stay in this country, paying the average

“low price” for three meals a day and accommodation, with a budget of $2,500.00 CDN.

Record this information in your project.

Step 12: Go to: http://www.lonelyplanet.com/ and click on “Travel Services>flights” on

the menu bar. Find out how much a return ticket from Vancouver to the capital city of

your chosen country is. Pick dates that fall under the “best times to go” already identified

in your project, and space them out according to maximum number of days your budget

allowed for in step 11.
