El Nino Research:
Today you are learning about El Niño. Go to the website below and click on the “El Nino” link on
the side of the page. From there you will have to click on various links.

Go under “Get Info”:
1. In your own words, define what is meant by El Nino.
2. Explain how El Nino’s impact marine life.
3. Using the diagrams under the link “El Nino Picture”, please list the major difference that
you notice between:
a. El Nino vs. Normal
b. La Nina vs. Normal
Now click on the link that reads “El Nino Impacts” and find the link that says “List Impacts of the
US”.
4. Once you have reached this page find the link that says “US Impacts- State by State”.
Find the data for NJ and answer the questions below.
a. How much more/less precipitation falls in NJ during an El Nino year?
b. How does the temperature vary in NJ during an El Nino year?
c. Do the same for the southern most point of Texas.
Now go to google and print out a map of the world (print to cart 5). After you have your
printed out map, please go to the following link. This link provides information about how
certain countries/areas are impacted by El Nino.

Using your printed out map and the information at this site, please label the area on the map and
come up with a way to represent the impact of El Nino. For example, if El Nino affected NJ with
severe storms you would first locate and label NJ on the map and then draw rain clouds near it.
Please do this for 5 different areas .
Finally, use any website you would like and list bullet points comparing/contrasting El Nino with La
Nina.
