Education Resource: Diabetes and PBS Kids (2007)
“Dealing with Diabetes” lesson (preschool through grade 4) is a new addition to the PBS Kids’ Arthur®
Hooray for Health series. The lesson was developed by WGBH (Boston) with experts from Joslin
Diabetes Center and follows an Arthur® episode about healthy eating (Desert Island Dish) and a live-
action segment featuring 11-year-old Corinne who has type 1 diabetes. Corinne talks about her
experiences with glucose monitoring and shows how she uses an insulin pump. "Desert Island Dish" is
shown regularly within the Arthur® broadcast schedule and the live-action segment featuring Corinne can
be seen at pbskidsgo.org/arthur/diabetes.
The 8-page lesson plan is also available from the pbskids.org website. It includes worksheets (English
and Spanish) on snacks and family exercise along with a summary of diabetes information. The guide
suggests inviting the school nurse or a certified diabetes educator as a guest speaker.
