By studying history we prevent ourselves from repeating it. Topics to be covered include: The art of studying history Ancient Greeks and Rome Rise of Democratic ideals Enlightenments & Revolutions The Industrial Revolution Imperialism/ colonialism The Great War Rise of Totalitarianism World Wars II The Cold War to modern times West Hills HS
Attendance: When you miss class, you miss important material, and this will have a negative effect on your grades. Should an absence occur it is the student’s responsibility to determine what make up work needs to be completed. This includes the student’s responsibility to obtain copies of missed notes, handouts, worksheets etc. A student with an excused absence will have two days (including the day of their return) to make up the work and turn it in. Please make sure to write “ABSENT” on your paper when you turn it in. You must be in the room and ready to work when the bell rings. Failure to do so will result in “lock out.” Grading: Your overall grade will be weighted by each 6-week grading period, as follows:

Late Work: Late work is not an option. Excuses do not work. Any assignment not turned in on time will receive a maximum of half credit the following day. (Yes, that is still an “F” but some credit is better than none). After that, no credit will be given.
Internet There will be some components of this course that will be available online, both at home and at school. A web page has been created for this course and is currently under development. It will include updated information about the course, an assignment calendar, and some uploaded class assignments/ lecture material. Evaluations: Tests (50%): Quizzes and tests will be given regularly and at the end of each unit. Evaluation of some units will be through a project. A final examination will be given to all students at the conclusion of the semester Homework/Assignments/Projects (50%): Includes everything but tests and quizzes. Homework, class work, daily journals, and any larger projects. Assignment logs containing all course work will be turned at the end of each unit. It is the student’s responsibility to keep papers for each unit. Classroom Behavior and Conduct: All of you have been in school for the majority of your lives, thus you know what is and what is not appropriate behavior in an educational setting. Yes, class can be “boring” sometimes, but the sooner you learn to deal with it, the sooner you will prepare yourself for LIFE once you graduate. I have one solid rule, RESPECT. This means respect not only for me but also for yourself and your fellow peers. I have however provided some traditional guidelines for your clarification: Bring all required materials to class each day (paper, pens, pencils, notebook, etc) Follow directions Question authority, but raise your hand! Do not talk out of turn. Be attentive and participate. RESPECT NO FOOD / GUM or beverages in the classroom. Bottled water is the ONLY exception ALL OTHER SCHOOL RULES APPLY
Consequences Possible consequences for infractions include but are not limited to: Verbal Warning Individual meeting with me Teacher assigned detention after school Referral to the VPs office Removal from class and loss of credit As your teacher, I reserve the right to enforce the above in any order I see fit. I also reserve the right to implement more than one of these consequences at the same time.
Electronic Devices: My policy is very Simple, “I see it / hear it… I take it.” This is District policy, that includes cell phones, head phones, iPods etc. Your item will then only be returned to your parent/guardian and a referral will also follow. This policy will hold unless I say that listening to music is OK during a class project etc. Academic Dishonesty Academic dishonesty will not be tolerated. “Cheating” will get you fired in the real world or get you in prison. This type of behavior is unethical and will result in an immediate referral, a ZERO on the assignment, and an automatic “U” in citizenship. Your parents will also be contacted.
