be returned to the US. One-way cross-border rentals
permitted in certain locations. Rental cars may not be

Suggested Journeys by Rail
The Coast Starlight
Travel along scenic coastline, past breaking surf and
through contrasting towns and cities on this spectacular
journey that stretches from Los Angeles in the
southern part of California, right up to Seattle in the
Pacific Northwest. Passing through Santa Barbara, San
Francisco and Portland to name but a few, the route
passes by the snow-covered peaks of Mount Shasta
and the Cascade Mountain Range, through lush valleys
and along long stretches of Pacific Ocean shoreline. As
the train passes San Luis Obispo, you cross Cuesta
Grade and descend over 1,000 feet in 11 miles.
Continuing on you pass behind the popular resort of
Pismo Beach, famous for its 23 miles of wide beaches.
Catch a dramatic glimpse of the massive sand dunes
through the tall Eucalyptus trees. As part of the Trails &
Rails program (see California Zephyr for further
information) National Park Service guides from the
Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park are
onboard the Coast Starlight between Seattle and
Portland and Klamath Falls and Eugene.
The California Zephyr
Experienced travellers say the California Zephyr is one
of the most beautiful train trips in all of North America.
As you climb through the heart of the Rockies, and
further west through the snow-capped Sierra Nevadas,
you may find it hard to disagree. The Zephyr runs daily
between Chicago and the San Francisco Bay area,
coursing through the plains of Nebraska to Denver,
across the Rockies to Salt Lake City, and then through
Reno and Sacramento into Emeryville (San Francisco).
Scenic highlights along the route include the majestic

This cracking route follows parts of the historic Lewis &
Clark Trail from the ‘windy city’ of Chicago across to
the Pacific Northwest. Amtrak’s Empire Builder provides
the perfect way to experience the rugged splendour of
the American West as it takes you on an exciting
adventure through majestic wilderness, following the
footsteps of early pioneers. From Chicago, you’ll have
magnificent views of the Mississippi before crossing the
North Dakota plains, skirting the Missouri River and
travelling through ‘Big Sky’ country in Montana. From
Spokane, you can choose to continue on to Seattle or
head down the Columbia River Gorge towards
Portland for spectacular views of Mt. Hood and Beacon
Rock. During the spring and summer months, National
Park Service guides from the Klondike Gold Rush
National Historic Park are onboard the Empire Builder
between Seattle and Shelby in Montana as part of the
Trails & Rails program which adds an additional
educational dimension to your journey should you wish.
