Take me to the data

Data used in this worksheet was extracted from the Community Social Data Strategy (CSDS). CSDS is an initiative of the Canadian

Council on Social Development in partnership with Statistics Canada.

Definitions provided below are from the Census Dictionary:

1. Household Type: Category to which a person living alone or a group of persons occupying the same dwelling belong. There are two

categories: non-family households and family households.

2. Non-family household: consists either of one person living alone or of two or more persons who share a dwelling, but do not constitute

a family (e.g., a couple with or without children).

3. Family households: refers to a household that contains at least one census family, that is, a married couple with or without children, or

a couple living common-law with or without children, or a lone parent living with one or more children (lone-parent family). There are

two subcategories of family households: one-family households and multiple-family households.

4. One-family household: consists of a single family (e.g., a couple with or without children).

5. Multiple-family household: is made up of two or more families occupying the same dwelling.

6. Household Size: is defined as the number of persons occupying a private dwelling.

7. Private Household: Person or group of persons occupying the same dwelling. (Refers to a person or a group of persons (other than

foreign residents) who occupy a private dwelling and do not have a usual place of residence elsewhere in Canada). Persons living in

institutions are excluded.

8. Lone Parents: refers to a mother or a father, with no spouse or common-law partner present, living in a dwelling with one or more

children.

Algorithm:

1. Proportion of household: (Number of Individual type of households / Total household type) * 100

2. Proportion of persons in household: (Number of persons in individual type of household / Persons in total household type) * 100

3. Average number of persons in private households: Number of persons in private households / Total household size

4. Couples with or without children: Married couples with or without children + Common-law couples with or without children

5. Random Rounding: Numbers may slightly vary between worksheets due to random rounding (The process by which figures are

rounded up or down to protect individuals from being identified within a population). All figures are rounded to a multiple of 5 or in

some cases 10. Percentages, which are calculated on rounded figures, do not necessarily add up to 100%.
