Letter from the Dear Friends,

Executive Director 1

In the last issue of Thank You Notes, we introduced the Campaign Cabinet - chaired

Surgical Pavilion 2

by Bill Rudisill. These generous volunteers worked to help us achieve the first phase of

SERAC Truck the Foundation's Our Health Our Hospital Our Future Capital Campaign to help build the

Kohl’s Back to School 3 Betty H. Cameron Women's and Children's Hospital. Thanks to the philanthropic spirit

of our donors and the generous efforts of the members of the Campaign Cabinet, we have

10th Annual Pink Ribbon 4

exceeded $5 million towards the $7 million goal and laid the groundwork for the

Pink Ribbon Partners 5 community gifts phase of the campaign.

The Foundation is honored to have the Chair of the Community Gifts Committee,

Founders’ Gala

John Allen, featured on the cover with his wife, Janet (Founders' Gala Committee

Red Dress

Holiday Tributes 7 member) and son, John David. When asked to chair this important phase of the

campaign, John was happy to help. He and Janet decided to support this project, both

with their generosity and their time because as parents of a small child they understand

Year in Review 9 how important it is to have a hospital dedicated to caring for children.

John is joined by Chad Pearson as co-chair of the Community Gifts Committee along

Gifts to the Foundation 10 with other dedicated volunteers, including Jay Taylor, Wanda Copley, David Sims, Steve

Anderson, Teresa Huffmon, Frank Potter and Linwood Gainey - to invite members of our

community to be a part of NHRMC's efforts to transform healthcare in Southeastern North

Carolina. In addition to the Cameron Women's and Children's Hospital, the campaign

also supports the construction of a new Surgical Pavilion (featured on page 2), the

expansion of the Emergency Department, Heart and Vascular Center and outpatient

services, as well as the renovation of the patient tower.

This past year has been an historic year in the life of New Hanover Regional

(celebrating 90 years of caring this past summer) and for the Foundation (Year in Review

is featured on page 9.) We've realized unprecedented growth in both the amount of funds

raised as well as the number of donors who have chosen to support New Hanover

Regional. We are extremely grateful for the individuals, organizations and businesses that

have expressed their support through generous donations of time, treasure and talent and

Requests for removal from this look forward to the opportunity to invite others in the community to be part of our efforts

Innovative Care

for Our Community

The new 100,000 square-foot Surgical Pavilion is part of

New Hanover Regional Medical Center's vision to position the

hospital on the cutting edge of advanced technology and

treatments and secure our place as one of the top hospitals in

the country. The design of the new facility, led by physicians,

nursing and staff is focused on providing patient and family-

centered care with attention to the details that will make our

patients and their loved ones more comfortable and reduce

their anxiety during their surgery.

Starting with a dedicated entrance and parking, the new

facility will also feature 64 pre- and post-operative private

Construction progress on the new pavilion as of November 5, 2007. rooms for patient and family members each furnished with TVs

and comfortable seating areas. Another family-centered

feature will be electronic tracking boards placed throughout the Pavilion to provide family members with on-going updates and

status reports on their loved ones' surgery.

The new Surgical Pavilion has also been designed to accommodate twenty-one 625-square foot operating rooms in addition

to five endoscopy rooms - all featuring the latest advances in surgical and patient care technology. Current operating suites range

between 430-450 square feet. In addition to larger operating rooms, the Pavilion will also feature specialty "pods" so that surgical

teams performing specialized procedures can be scheduled in specific "pods," each with dedicated equipment, instrumentation

and supplies - thus, creating a more efficient environment for physicians and staff to care for patients.

Every aspect of the new Surgical Pavilion will address the needs of our patients and their loved ones as well as physicians and

staff. The new facility is scheduled to open in the spring of 2008.

Foundation Gift Helps NHRMC Trauma Team

Save Lives

The Southeastern Regional Advisory Committee on Trauma

(SERAC) has received a gift of $68,000 from the Foundation to

purchase a specially-outfitted tractor to pull the unit's Mobile Field

Hospital. In the past 5 years the SMAT (State Medical Assistance

Team) program has grown from a single 32' trailer to an assortment

of emergency vehicles including a Mobile Field Hospital, a 50-bed

functional medical facility that includes emergency and trauma care

capabilities. Until now, special arrangements had to be made to rent

a tractor or locate one in the region in order to mobilize the field

hospital. This put the region in jeopardy and unable to respond

quickly in case of emergency. left to right: Foundation Board members Don Adkins, Marlene Sigler, Robert

Busch, Michael Youngblood, Mat White, Dr. William O. McMillan Jr., Pam

hospital would still be sitting stationary between two yellow lines of

the parking lot without the ability to respond to emergency or disaster situations. We are so thankful to the donors of the

Foundation for helping make this purchase possible," said Bernie Medieros on behalf of the entire NHRMC Trauma and SERAC team.

Back to School Safety

Extravaganza Sponsored by

The New Hanover Regional Medical Center Foundation and Trauma

Services teamed up with Kohl's Department Store in Wilmington on

Saturday, August 18th to provide "Back to School" safety information for students K-12 as they prepared for the start of the 2007

school year. Stranger Danger, bike and bus safety, bullying, tobacco and alcohol awareness

and prevention were some of the topics covered by community experts that included the

Wilmington Police Department, Duplin County Health Services, Safe Kids Cape Fear

Coalitions and New Hanover County Schools. Over 500 bike helmets were given to area

children of all ages.

"We are pleased that our partnership with the Kohl's Cares for Kids Program allowed us

to do a second event this year to educate parents, students and teachers on the importance of

back-to-school safety," said Tina Poole, NHRMC Trauma Services Injury Prevent Coordinator.

The Kohl's Cares for Kids program has donated over $20,000 this year to the Medical Center

for children's safety programs which included a water safety event this past summer.

10th Annual Event a Success

The NHRMC Foundation hosted its 10th annual Pink Ribbon breakfast, lunch and dinner event at the Holiday Inn SunSpree

Resort on October 11th. The breakfast featured inspiring presentations from GYN Oncologist, Dr. Walter Gajewski and 13-year

cancer survivor, Susanna Phillips. Author Amy Sedaris was the guest speaker at the luncheon, and dinner guests were awed and

amazed at the mind-reading of Michael C. Anthony. Since the event began over ten years ago, more than $800,000 has been

raised to help provide 4,000 "comfort bags" to area women as they undergo treatment for cancer. Money raised is also used to

provide uninsured women mammography services through the Coastal Care Van, the region's only mobile cancer screening van.

Thanks to the continued support of the community and our sponsors, the event not only provides early diagnosis and comfort to

hundreds of women in our area but it helps raise community awareness of the issue of women and cancer.

The sale of commemorative

boosted the event's fund-

raising efforts.

One of the events speakers, Susanna Phillips, adorned a

pink sweater with an initialed “S”.

Wilmington gyn-oncologist, Dr. Walter Gajewski, inspired

guests at the Pink Ribbon breakfast with a story of the

courage and faith of a cancer patient.

8 Fall 2007 Thank You Notes

A Year in Review

New Hanover Regional Medical Center Foundation ended its fiscal year on September 30, 2007. This was a record-breaking year

for the Foundation in both funds raised and number of new donors joining the Foundation in support of its mission to support New

Hanover Regional Medical Center. We are grateful to the 2,614 donors who made this year possible and allowed the Foundation to

fund over $2,628,837 in capital, program, equipment and education needs of the medical center.

Revenue

Restricted and unrestricted contributions to the NHRMC Foundation totaled $4,924,242, exceeding last year's total by over 250%.

The primary focus of the Foundation this year was support of the Our Health Our Hospital Our Future Capital Campaign and ended

the year with a total $5 million in verbal and written gifts and pledges. Signed pledges to the capital campaign totaled $3,821,225.

The Foundation realized a gain of $524,612 in its realized and unrealized gains on investments.

Expenses

Fundraising expenses totaled $567,746 and include expenses related to the Foundation's special events as well as annual giving,

direct mail and capital campaign expenses. The Foundation achieved a .12¢ cost to raise a dollar at year end. Operating expense

totaled $91,629 and includes donor recognition, professional fees, educational opportunities for Foundation staff and office supplies.

New Hanover Regional Medical Center provides support for some the Foundation's operations including salaries and benefits,

rent and depreciation which totaled $504,664. By reducing administrative expenses, this support allows donor funds to be used for

the purpose for which the gift is intended.

Support to the Medical Center reflects the Foundation's core mission -

to raise philanthropic and community support for New Hanover
