Making Academics and CTE a

Seamless System

“Simplicity is the

ultimate

sophistication”

- Leonardo da Vinci

People are born free…

They are not born wise…

The purpose of schooling in

a democracy is to make free

people wise.

The primary aim of

education is not to

enable students to do

well in school, but to

help them do well in the

lives they lead outside

of school.

We’ve created false proxies for

learning…

• Finishing a course or textbook has come

to mean achievement

• Listening to lecture has come to mean

understanding

• Getting a high score on a standardized

test has come to mean proficiency

Learning should have its roots in..

• Meaning, not just memory

• Engagement, not simply transmission

• Inquiry, not only compliance

• Exploration, not just acquisition

• Personalization, not simply uniformity

• Collaboration, not only competition

• Trust, not fear

• Basic Knowledge/Skills Applied Skills

•Critical Thinking/Problem

• English Language (spoken) Solving

•Oral Communication

• Reading Comprehension

• (in English) •Written Communication

• Writing in English

•Teamwork/Collaboration

• (grammar, spelling, etc.)

• Mathematics •Diversity

•Information Technology

• Science

Application

• Government/Economics •Leadership

•Creativity/Innovation

• Humanities/Arts

•Lifelong Learning/Self

• Foreign Languages Direction

•Professionalism/Work Ethic

• History/Geography

“In times of change, learners

inherit the Earth while the

learned find themselves

beautifully equipped to deal

We can‟t talk our way out

We have a flawed perspective of

always listening to our best

customers… They tell us how

good the system is working for

them!

Report : Measuring Skills

The „Must Have‟ Skill

• It is an emphasis on what students can do

with knowledge, rather than what units of

knowledge they have, that best describes

the essence of 21st century skills.

“Measuring Skills” November 2008 Education Sector

Basic skills are necessary but not

sufficient.

• The commission’s report describes how new technology

and global competition have changed the game for

American workers. Students need a strong foundation of

basic skills, the commission asserts, but that alone is no

longer enough for economic and job security. “It is a

world in which comfort with ideas and abstractions is the

passport to a good job, in which creativity and innovation

are the key to the good life, in which high levels of

education—a very different kind of education than most

of us have had—are going to be the only security there

is.”
