SOL 4.5
Objective: The student will round decimals to the nearest whole number to
estimate the sum and difference of two decimals.
Materials Needed: Interwrite pads
Pre-assessment/Focus/Review: (P)Have students estimate several numbers using
closer to and a little more than. Teacher will make groups for today’s activity
accordingly.
Teacher Input: Teacher will lead the sum and differences activity
Guided and Independent Practice: Students are doing the “Estimating Decimal
Sums and Differences” from enhanced scope and sequence p25. The activity is
pretending that we are at the grocery store with a certain amount of money. We
will estimate and add & subtract to ensure that we have enough money for our
choices. Students will be broken into groups of 2-3 to complete activity. Students
will do the math in their heads and give answers orally.
Summary and/or Assessment: The teacher will look at group activities to check
for the level of understanding.

Objective: The student will estimate whole-number sums and differences and
describe the method of estimation using the terms closer and a little more than.
Materials Needed: Paper and pencils, sales flyers, pencil paper
Pre-assessment/Focus/Review: Review of, estimation, addition & subtraction, and
rounding
Teacher Input: Teacher will introduce the “Estimation Game” from Enhanced
scope & Sequence p3, and then she will monitor and assist as needed. Using a
grocery flyer, students will buy as much as possible without going over. Work will
be done on paper.
Guided and Independent Practice: “Estimation Game”
