									Chanukah 2010 Kislev - Tevet - Shevat 5771 Volume 40, Issue 2

 Message from Rabbi Randi Musnitsky
On December 22, 2010, my husband, Rabbi Ron Kaplan and I will be
escorting 46 people to Israel for a 10 day adventure. We will range in age
from 11 to 88 years of age. There will be families, multi-generations, singles,
couples, teens and 6 B’nai Mitzvah. There are some who are fulfilling the
dream of a lifetime and others who are traveling reluctantly. There are some
who are anxious, others who are afraid, some who can’t believe that they will
actually get on the plane and still others who are bursting with anticipation.
There are some who are going to please others, some who are pleasing
themselves and some who have no choice. There are those that want the warm
weather and those who hope it will be cool; those who want the museums
and those who want the outdoor adventure; those
 who want to tour and those who want to shop;
and those who want to pray and those who hope

                                                                           Happy
they do not have to attend a service. In short, this
trip is made up of individuals who will be brought
together by the magic and mystery of our people’s
 homeland.
Ron and I have been leading these trips for

                                                                         Chanukah
more than 25 years, taking hundreds and hundreds
of people on pilgrimage to Israel. The travel is never
easy; the group dynamics are usually a challenge
and the work involved hardly makes it a vacation.
Yet we do these trips over and over again because
the transformations of those who join us never
cease to amaze us. Every trip brings the blessings To the entire congregation
of joy and tears, awakening and renewal.
The Land of Israel may start out as a destination,
                                                                       and all the members
but by the conclusion of our visit, we realize that of their families
we have experienced a true homecoming within
the embrace of the hearts and spirits of our Jewish from
 nation.
I am truly honored that members of our
                                                                       The Rabbis, Cantor,
congregation will join me on this journey. I hope Staff, Officers and
that upon our return January 1, 2011, we will
inspire many others to contemplate such a trip. Board of Trustees
I sincerely hope that one of your New Year’s
resolutions will be to vow to make a visit to Israel of
a reality for you and your family.
                                                                        Temple Har Shalom

As I compose my second column for the Shofar, the leaves have not yet
fallen from the oak and maple trees in my backyard. I am thinking about
Chanukah but it is a warm fall day and feels more like Rosh Hashanah or
Sukkot.
My first few months as president have been very rewarding. I miss
several dinners at home but my family knows they can always find me on
Mt. Horeb Road.
This year Har Shalom has enjoyed a few parties, movie night with Rabbi
Fellner as well as Linda Fairstein’s lecture. We continue to provide a world
class education to our children as we improve adult programming. The plans
for our fortieth anniversary are being finalized. We will keep you notified
about these events through the weekly email blasts. The 40th Anniversary
Party will be held at the Temple on Saturday evening March 19, 2011.
The High Holy Day appeal has been successful, but we remain short of my
goal: One hundred percent participation. Voluntary giving is an important
part of temple membership. We are responsible for each other. At Har Shalom we strive to keep our doors open to
all. We expect all members to give beyond their dues obligation. The appeal concludes on December 31st. If you
have not participated yet, please consider a contribution of $250. This is just under ten percent of dues.
Chanukah will give us another opportunity to discuss the mitzvah of tzedakah with our families. Many of us give
multiple gifts to our children during the holiday season. Please make a family gift to Har Shalom on the fourth night
of Hanukkah in lieu of another Gameboy or Wii product. We picked the fourth night to correspond with our 40th
anniversary. The synagogue will use the funds to purchase additional prayer books and provide comfort to those in
need throughout the holidays. During dinner on the fourth night we can all have family discussions regarding our
duty to care and provide for each other.
Throughout the cold winter months we will collect warm clothing, canned goods and other non-perishables for
the local food banks and shelters. If your winter coat is out of style or your child’s coat is too small, please bring it
to Temple Har Shalom. We will make sure it continues to provide warmth.
     Happy Chanukah!

Rabbi Burstein Goes on a “Toxic Tour” of Newark, NJ
In my position at the Union for Reform Judaism, I am working on
a pilot project with other URJ and RAC (Religious Action Center) staff
members called Greening Reform Judaism. The project is a two-year
program that partners congregations from the URJ with GreenFaith,
a non-profit organization based in New Brunswick, NJ, that inspires,
educates and mobilizes people of diverse religious backgrounds for
environmental leadership. I was invited to participate on one of their
Environmental Justice tours in the Ironbound District of Newark, and to
visit the ports of Newark and Elizabeth. The purpose of the trip was to
educate religious and community leaders about the dangers and hazards
of pollution in the area, and how it harms residents and visitors alike.
The dozen or so participants met at a monumental Baptist Church
in Newark. (To be honest it would have been very interesting to just
tour the church, as they provide an incredible amount of services and support to members of their community, from a
food bank to job training.) We took a bus tour through Newark and Elizabeth, passing many sights that I know and
recognize, including the Amtrak station, Newark Airport, and the Jersey Gardens Outlet Mall. After passing those
familiar landmarks, we then visited other nearby sights that I never knew existed.
Here are just two of the sights we saw:
  • Passaic Valley Sewage Authority, which covers 172 acres and is one of the largest wastewater facilities in the
Northeast. This facility serves 380,000 residential units, 360 large apartment buildings, 2025 large commercial
institutions and 380 major industries in their area. They treat about 6.5 million gallons of liquid from sources
outside their sewer service area each week.
  • Diamond Alkali/Shamrock Superfund site, which contains the world’s largest concentration of dioxin, an extremely
toxic chemical which is used in the production of DDT and phenoxy herbicides (which was converted to Agent
Orange in the Vietnam War). They have had to cement the chemicals into the ground that already exist there,
but there are also barrels of dioxin that are still stored adjacent to the Passaic River. After many, long years of
fighting and court cases, there is currently a process to clean up the dioxin in the river.
Also, I learned that there are 10,000 truck trips each day in and out of the Port of Elizabeth, and I learned how
difficult it is to get legislation passed to require the trucks to have clean engines and filters. One study that was done
showed that 175 trucks passed by an elementary school every hour. Imagine what that does to the air quality.
There were a few bright spots on our tour, too. The former Ballantine Brewery is leading an effort to redevelop
and revitalize their 25-acre property as a green manufacturing area and a mixed-use sustainable site. The new
Ironbound Pool and Recreation Center is on the site of a former plastics manufacturing site, even though it took 20
years to clean up the area. Tours are given to various groups on a regular basis so they can learn about the area and
engage in advocacy on all levels.
My friends teased me before I took the tour that they hoped I wouldn’t return glowing (radioactively). That certainly
wasn’t the case, but the tour did inspire me to learn more about the problems and to try to energize the communities of
which I am a part to advocate for those who don’t have the
means to do so. I hope that you will join me. Feel free to

Holy Days of our 40th year; enjoyed Movie Night and a lively discussion about A Serious Man with film critic Rabbi Azriel

Celebration with
Linda Fairstein Lecture
Linda Fairstein was the inaugural speaker for the
Carol Cohen Davis Lectureship on November 18th
as THS kicked off its year-long celebration of its 40th
Anniversary.
Fairstein is currently a bestselling crime novelist and
she spoke about her transition to writer from Chief of
the Sex Crimes Unit of the Manhattan D.A.’s office.
Her lecture was informative and inspiring and was
enjoyed by over 150 congregants and community
members. A reception and book signing followed.
Many thanks to Andy Davis and family (pictured

Religious School News
Chanukah commemorates the victory of the
Maccabees over the Syrian army in 165 BCE and
the subsequent liberation of and rededication of
the Temple in Jerusalem. In celebration, we are
instructed to publicize the miracle. Young children
are taught that the miracle was that the oil lasted
far longer than expected. As we get older, we learn
that the real miracle was that enough righteous
Jews were willing to fight for religious freedom.
It was a military victory of a band of guerillas with a vision, a small group who wanted to preserve the right to be
different, the right not to assimilate into the majority culture. The ultimate miracle was that the weak defeated the
strong, the few achieved over the many. The miracle of the first Chanukah from the opening guerilla strike to the
final flicker of light in the Temple, is that somebody believed, somebody acted, and something holy transpired.
During the months of November and December, the holiday of Chanukah has been and will be the focus of much
of our classroom lessons and activities. The sights, sounds and smells emanating in our hallways and classrooms will
serve to heighten the pride our children feel in their Judaism. Classroom lessons will teach all aspects of the holiday
and special programming will abound for all. Special programming includes:
   A Tuesday, November 16:
An Israeli artist worked with our 5th graders in crafting copper etched chanukiyot.
   A Sunday, November 21:
Our annual Chanukah Gift Shop afforded students an opportunity to inexpensively purchase gifts for family
members. Students in Grades K – 6 visited with their classes.
   A Sunday, December 5:
Kindergarten through third graders will participate in a rotation activity as classes are transformed into a Chanukah
Fair. With passports in hand, students will play draydle
and other holiday games, make latkes, hear stories, sing,
watch a play and light the chanukiyah.
   A Sunday, December 5: B RIDGEWATER

THS Children Celebrate Rosh Hashanah

Tales from the Mountain Top
Most young people leave organized Jewish life
after their Bar/Bat-Mitzvah or Confirmation never to
return – until they bring a small Jewish soul back with
them as they register for an early childhood program.
Our community and our early childhood educators
recognize the enormous opportunity presented to us
by each new Jewish family that entrusts us with their
child. As much as we interact with the child, we also
recognize the powerful potential to (re-)engage the
family in Jewish life and to develop educational and family-oriented initiatives to capitalize on this moment. We can’t
believe the holiday season is upon us already! How quickly the beautiful fall season flew by!
Our hard working parent committee has been busy since September. Harvest Day was a wonderful event.
Children decorated pumpkins, worked on Fall crafts, danced to the DJ and bounced in the Bouncy House. We visited
our sukkot, shared stories with one another and shook the lulav and smelled the etrog. We also paraded around the
sanctuary in celebration of Simchat Torah, flags and all!
In October, Kidstuff Books and gift wrap were sold. Our Back-to-School Night was once again a great success!
We had beautiful pictures in the classrooms for our parents to see. It’s always great seeing your children in action!
We welcomed Swift Farm to our school. All of our classes enjoyed a real farm that visited Mountain Top, animals
and all! We had a pumpkin patch to explore and every child took home a beautiful pumpkin.
Beth Kanengiser planned the first Mom’s Night Out of the year. We had a big turnout. Mark your calendars for
the next Mom’s Night Out, for Mountain Top and THS members, January 13, 2011 at Alfie’s.
The entire Mountain staff attended “Teach the Child, Reach the Family,” the annual early childhood conference
sponsored by the Partnership for Jewish Learning and Life. We enjoyed a morning of workshops and networking
with other Jewish early childhood centers.
In November, the committee organized a bake sale during Special Persons Day. We continue to get wonderful
participation for these very important efforts. Danielle Abrutyn and Danielle Lader and many parent volunteers work
so hard throughout the year. We are grateful for their efforts!
We move into the month of December with many Simchas/Celebrations! Chanukah promises to bring fun-filled
days, as we sing-a-long for our parents and special guests.
Chanukah Tot Shabbat and More – will be held on Friday, December 3rd. It begins at 5:30 p.m. with holiday
activities, songs, stories and crafts with Miss Marcy (Byer), Rabbi Musnitsky and Cantor Berman. The festivities
continue with a Chanukah dinner with all the accoutrements. Families can even stay for 7 p.m. services. Bring your
menorahs.
The children are also learning about tzedakah. Tzedakah, the giving of money or assistance to the needy is
commonly explained as charity, although a more accurate translation is “righteous giving”. As tzedakah is collected and
counted each week, it is accumulated and periodically distributed to worthy causes throughout the school year.
Mountain Top is so lucky to have Cantor Anna Berman help us celebrate Shabbat every Friday morning. Cantor
Anna leads Shabbat music, celebrating the Shabbat child, birthdays, and teaching new songs about the Jewish
holidays we are celebrating.
Marcy Byer continues to facilitate Torah Tots once a
month on Sunday mornings and also plans our Friday
evening Tot Shabbats, celebrating major Jewish holidays
throughout the year.
On behalf of all of us at Mountain Top School for
Young Children, I would like to wish you and your
families a very Happy and Healthy Chanukah!

Director, Mountain Top School for Young Children

Our Community
We are a growing community and as a community, we want to share in each other’s joys and comfort each other
in times of need. Thoughtful family and friends will always inform the Temple when a loved one is seriously ill or
hospitalized. The Rabbis and Cantor make every effort to visit hospitals whenever possible.
A phone call to the Temple office will greatly help us to serve our congregants in times of need as well as on
occasions of joy and celebration. Please feel free to submit such information to The Shofar each month.

Chai and Temple Tributes
There are many ways to mark the special occasions or lifecycle events of friends and family members. Temple Har
Shalom has created tribute cards that can appropriately send a message that will commemorate a wedding, birth,
Bar/Bat Mitzvah, convey thoughts of sympathy, or special wishes or congratulations on a special day or event. The
next time you consider purchasing a commercial greeting card, won’t you consider sending a Temple Har Shalom
tribute card instead? An acknowledgement card will be sent promptly to the recipient of your donation and your
thoughtful gift will be listed in The Shofar.
Chai Tribute donations support the functions of the Caring Committee as they respond to the needs of our
congregants, including presenting a gift to families of newborns, sending care packages to college students, and
attending to the needs of bereaved families. The minimum donation is Chai, $18. General tribute donations help
support our Temple’s general funds and the minimum donation is $7.50. Donations may be sent to the Temple office
or billed to your Temple account. Please contact Office Manager Elissa Degani in the Temple Office at (732) 356-
8777 ext 106 or go to www.templeharshalom.org and click on donations.
