Pilots become very good at estimating values in their heads and using what are called "rules of thumb" in their estimations.
ANY flight that you take is only as good as the planning that goes into it. Aviators work out a flight log for every trip that they take.
They figure the time to checkpoints along the way and also fuel useage to avoid the very embarassing and possibly life ending
event of running ourt of fuel!
