LONDON AREA PADDLESPORT COURSES
1. Attached to this LATM is a full listing of Paddlesport Courses available at Area level during 2010.
These courses provide introductory, improver and advanced paddling skills, coaching and safety courses
for Cadets and Staff.
2. It is anticipated that introductory courses at BCU 1 Star and Paddlepower Passport level should
be accessed at Unit and District level. A number of limited course dates are available on the Area
programme for beginner training; however priority will be given to Units without qualified Paddlesport
staff. For a wider range of local beginner training, Units are encouraged to contact their ‘District
Paddlesport Representative’ if they have one or ASO (Paddlesport) direct. More information can be
found on the Area Website: (http://londonarea.ms-sc.org/Training/Training-Afloat/Paddlesports).
3. Area course details for each activity are shown on the accompanying notes pages. Booking
information is also shown on website: http://londonarea.ms-sc.org/Training/Training-
Afloat/Paddlesports/Course-Information. As a reminder, the cut off point for course applications is
14 days before the course start date for all courses except Coaching courses which have a one month
cut off point. Whilst we always try to fill courses from London Area, places unfilled by the application
deadline will be offered to other SCC Areas. Units are advised to book as soon as possible
to avoid disappointment.
4. All course bookings are to be made using Westminster. Completed Westminster Consent forms
and Course Fee are to be forwarded to ASO (Paddlesport)’s address at RVDBS. Course enquiries can
be made on the following email address: angela@jbennetts.co.uk
5. Unit Training Officers are requested to display the attached course dates and notes on Cadet and
Staff notice boards.

3. Below contains information and pre-requisites on each course.
Flat Water Courses – Improvement & Intermediate
OI Open Canoe Intermediate – This course is aimed at developing basic open canoe skills or for those with
Paddlepower Discover who wish to gain the full BCU 2 star award.
Pre-requisites
Fully enrolled & 13 years or older. Hold the old BCU 1 star open canoe award or
Paddlepower Passport or new BCU 1 star.
O3G Generic BCU 3 Star Open Canoe Skills – This course is aimed at introducing BCU 3 star open canoe
skills, allowing candidates to build on their BCU 2 star personal paddling skills before undertaking further
specialist BCU 3 star training.
Pre-requisites
Fully enrolled & 13 years or older.
Hold the old BCU 2 star open canoe or new
BCU 2 star.
KI Kayak Intermediate - This course is aimed at developing kayaking skills, providing a firm grounding in
flat water paddling, while working towards the Paddlepower Discover or BCU 2 star awards.
Pre-requisites
Fully enrolled & 13 years or older.
Hold the old BCU 1 star kayak award or
Paddlepower Passport or new BCU 1 star.
K3G Generic BCU 3 Star Kayak Skills - This course is aimed at developing generic BCU 3 star kayaking
skills. There are a number of BCU 3 star kayak awards including Sea Kayaking, White Water Kayak,
Surf Kayak and various competition awards. This course provides a skill base to assist with all of the
new BCU 3 star kayak awards and would be a good first step after completion of Paddlepower Discover
or BCU 2 star. The course will cover rolling, rescue skills, edge control, towing and offers students
advice on different BCU 3 star disciplines.
Pre-requisites
Fully enrolled & 13 years or older.
Hold the old BCU 2 star kayak or
Paddlepower Discover or new BCU 2 star.
Please note: It is unlikely to pass a Paddlepower Discover or BCU 2 star with one course. Each time a
student attends a course, progression will be made towards the next level.
Also, all kayak courses include capsizing as part of the training, students should be happy to undertake
this as part of the course. Open Canoe courses may include entry into the water, but will not involve
capsizing the boat.
Safety and Rescue Courses
FSRT Foundation Safety & Rescue Training - The course aims to provide the student with the key safety and
rescue skills required to operate safely in a sheltered water environment and to be able to deal with
common Paddlesport rescue situations. The course is ideal for senior cadets and adults wanting to
progress onto Coaching courses. Warning: this course includes extensive capsizing and swimming,
students must all be comfortable with these activities. A wet suit is necessary to undertake this course.
This award can also be used as part of the bronze Duke of Edinburgh service section.
