Music From The Elder
What If
Forget everything you've heard, forget the supposed "concept," forget that
this album is even by KISS at all. Just listen, learn and love...
"Music from the Elder" is this: a very cool, unusual, majestic, haunting,
sometimes silly, rarely pretentious, entirely wonderful, and above all
supremely melodic rock album. It doesn't sound like the 1970s or '80s,
and it doesn't really sound like the KISS we all know. It's its own animal,
and after 28 years of bad-rapping -- most shamefully by Misters Simmons
and Stanley, who ought to be far prouder of this, and far more ashamed of
all the hair-metal junk they wasted the rest of the '80s recording -- "The
Elder" deserves a good honest listen.
Despite the stories about producer Bob Ezrin's coke-fueled megalomania,
his work here sounds awesome as usual; the thing rocks massively
("Escape from the Island," "The Oath") and swoons gorgeously
("Odyssey," "A World Without Heroes").
All this plus "Dark Light" (Ace Frehley's best song after "Shock Me" and
"Rocket Ride") and three songs co-written with Lou Reed of all people?
Do yourself a favor: just give this album a damn chance, and learn to
respect your "Elder"! This is one of KISS' best-ever albums -- deal with it!
By the way, Gene and Paul? There's more to life than record $ale$...
