Metal Machine Music by Lou Reed
Noisiest Album Ever
Out of print in the U.S., this a mid-priced 1992 reissuefrom RCA Germany
of his hour long experimental album for thelabel, originally released in
1975. Four tracks, all partsof the title cut.
This album has all my respect for several reasons:
1. It takes a lot of guts to release an album of pure feedback, specially
back in the mid 70s.
2. Lester Bangs crab loved it
3. It broke boundries and has been very influential, clearing the way for
many other bands
4. It's the noisiest and most annoying album I've ever heard, so credit to
the man for that. Plenty other guys try to do the same but just end up being
lame. not Lou
Now, I won't discuss wether this is music or not. It might not be, but it's for
real. About a year ago I read Fitzgeralds "The great Gatsby". I flapped the
last page. The book had seemed empty to me, phony. After that I needed
some real emotions. I put on MMM and it did it for me.
I understand very well that many people hate this (I do get a kick out of the
angry 1 star reviews posted here, haha). I myself don't play it that often
and never more than one track. But I'm glad I bought it, if only because it
comes handy if your housemates, like mine, have the habit of putting
REALLY loud dodgy music.
Perhaps 5 stars is going a bit too far, but there are far too many 1 star
ratings, so I'm compensating a little
