On Thursday, April 15, 2010, 26 fourth and fifth graders participated in the Math League Contest.
This is a contest aimed at challenging students’ mathematical reasoning skills. Fourth and fifth graders
from within the school competed against each other as they were expected to answer 30 problems in
30 minutes. The questions on the contest ranged from easy to very difficult, with most questions
involving some type of word problem or an algebraic type of equation.

Hillview’s students showed impressive math skills and understanding on the contest this year. The
average score of the group was about 20, which means that the average students got two-thirds of the
questions correct! The high scorers in fourth grade were Michael Stringer, Kai Robinson, and Sean
Budowsky. In fifth grade, Emily Friedman, Olivia Sayre, and Alyssa Thomson scored high. The top
scorer in fourth grade was Bradley Deamer with an impressive 28 correct, while Daniel Lutz was the
top scorer in fifth grade with an amazing 27 correct. Congratulations to all of the Math League
Contest participants!

Our students once again demonstrated that they have all the right ingredients to cook
up a warm Valentines wish for those in need. This past Valentines Day, Hillview students in
grades K- 5 made creative, thoughtful and inspiring “Valentines for Veterans” for the
veterans at Lyons VA Hospital and East Orange Medical Centers in New Jersey.
Our students’ valentines impressed Congressman Rodney P. Frelinghuysen, who wrote
“(Hillview students) showed care and appreciation for the sacrifices Veterans have made for
us.” Congressman Frelinghuysen had a flag dedicated and flown over the United States
Capitol Building on February 17, 2010, in honor of Hillview School and the students’
participation in “Valentines for Veterans”. The flag and letters from Congressman
Frelinghuysen can be seen in the Hallway next to the Main Office.
A special thank-you to Mrs. Munro who assisted students in making cards in the Media
Center and to Mrs. Livesey’s class, who made some beautifully hand-crafted Valentines. We
are very proud of all of our students and their willingness to help others. This special
contribution made a difference to our veterans.

May 6th we will be having our 3rd annual Arthritis Walk. We
will be walking for those who can’t, and helping to raise
awareness and money for a cure. Don’t forget to bring in your
collection envelopes by the 6th. We are looking forward to
                            another fun filled walk!

Media Musings…

What better way to celebrate National Poetry Month than to have a real, live, famous poet
visit Hillview? Most exciting is the fact that the poet was none other than our 2009 Hillview
Poetry Idol Winner…Doug Florian! Thanks to the generosity of the Hillview Home and School
Association, Mr. Florian spent the day with students and everyone enjoyed hearing his
poetry, seeing his illustrations, learning about elements of poetry and the publishing process.
One student from each class had the chance to eat lunch with Mr. Florian, and he also
autographed books for students. We have many of his poetry books to enjoy in the Media
Center collection. Thank you Home and School for this opportunity!
