Press release

Less than one month left to register to vote

Mid Sussex District Council is urging residents that have not already

responded to the 2010 electoral canvass to do so immediately. There is

now less than one month left before voter registration closes on 23

November 2010.

Mid Sussex District Council and local Town and Parish Council elections will be held on 5

May 2011. There is also the potential for the first national referendum to be held in 35

years to run alongside the election.

Every resident in Mid Sussex must register their details if they wish to vote in the Town,

Parish and District Council elections next year. So far 82% of households have responded,

final reminders have been sent to most of the remaining properties and doorstep

canvassers will visit the rest.

Registering could not be more convenient; residents have the option to confirm their

details by post, phone, online or SMS text message. So far this year, more than 17,000

households have embraced modern confirmation methods by using the phone, internet or

text message. This represents a 23% increase in the total number of registrations using

these methods since the last canvass in 2009.

Tom Clark, Electoral Registration Officer for Mid Sussex said: “We want to help the

residents of Mid Sussex to have their say, maintain their democratic rights and not miss

out on the opportunity to vote. It is important that everyone is aware that the Electoral

Register and Council Tax database are legally separate. Payment of Council Tax does not

automatically entitle people to vote.”

The independent Electoral Commission has a website, www.aboutmyvote.co.uk, packed

with information about registering to vote, who can register and the different ways of

having your say – you can even visit a virtual polling station!

Anyone who has moved house in the previous few weeks and has not received a form for

his or her new property should contact the electoral services office immediately. For more

information about the registration process and voting go to www.midsussex.gov.uk,

contact Electoral Services on 01444 477003 or email elections@midsussex.gov.uk.

Registering to vote only takes a few minutes. Don’t miss out on your chance to make your

voice heard.
