Tynecastle Blank

At Tynecastle yesterday, Banks took the keeper's jersey for the first time in a league match for

United and Webster returned to the centre of the defence. Scott Robertson came in for the

suspended Gomis and up front, Daly and Goodwillie formed the strike force.

Daly had the first chance of the match but just failed to control a Conway free kick. There was a

lot a stake for the home side with a Europa League place still in sight and during a slow first

twenty minutes they had some early chances but did not seriously trouble Banks. United had the

better of the first half with Kenneth and Daly both having decent headed efforts. Then a great

move in the latter stages gave Conway the best chance of the half but the keeper saved and his

second effort was cleared off the line. Webster had the ball in the net from a Conway free kick

but it was ruled out and Goodwillie fired wide as half time approached.

Goodwillie was again just wide early in the second half and Swanson did likewise before a

fantastic Conway delivery gave Shala a chance. The United winger also hit a free kick on target

but the keeper saved and there were chances for Daly, Shala, Myrie-Williams, Kenneth and

Conway. At the other end Banks did well to turn the ball away from Hearts best effort of the

match and another couple of shots were off target. Late in the game both sides went for a winner

but neither side could find the telling ball.

The result ended Hearts slim chance of a Europa League spot. Although it was honours even,

United had the best chances and were perhaps unfortunate not to take all three points.

Give Youth a Chance

United lined up with six changes to the side from last week. Youth centre back Craig Hill made his debut and

Keith Watson was back in the starting eleven. Also in from the start were David Robertson, Kevin Smith,

Damian Casalinuovo and Danny Cadamarteri, although the latter of this group was replaced just ten minutes

into the match by 18 year old Ryan Dow, making his competitive debut.

Rangers had the better of the first half and took a two-goal advantage with a second minute Boyd goal and

Novo scored the second late in the half. The Ibrox side had other chances but failed to find the target other

than a Boyd effort which Pernis held. United had just a couple of first half opportunities

After the break, United improved and deservedly got one back when Dow's corner was met by Casalinuovo

and took a deflection before going in. Several other chances came United's way with Gomis and Casalinuovo

firing over, and good efforts from David Robertson, Scott Robertson and Ryan Dow, United's man of the

match. The youth player turned in a very good performance, providing a constant threat down the left.

Rangers had chances too and Pernis twice saved free kicks comfortably whilst Novo blasted wide and Boyd

fired narrowly past.

After a shaky start, United settled, and finished the stronger side in the latter stages, almost snatching a point.

The Manager gave youth a chance and the young United side gave all they had but the newly crowned league

champions were just too much for them.

Season Ticket Package 10/11

Dundee United have launched their new season ticket package, with prices of just £40 for all

kids under 12 years old.

Early Bird tickets went sale on Monday 26 April, with discounts ranging from 12% to 80% on walk

up gate prices and on average provide free admission for up to five games for adults - almost a

quarter of all SPL home games.

Early Bird prices for kids have been reduced to only £40 for U12s - only £2 per game! This

provides a discount of up to an incredible 80% on the gate price and is the equivalent of getting

15 (out of 19) games completely free of charge.

Early Bird prices offer huge cash savings for all supporters, with adults saving up to £92 a year

compared to the gate price.

. Adult prices start at only £290 (approx £15 per game). This saves £92 (24%) on the gate price.

. Senior Citizen prices from £180 (£9 per game). This saves 12% on the senior citizen gate price

and a massive 53% on the adult price.

. Under 18 prices from £120 (£6 per game). A saving of 41% on the concession gate price and

almost 70% on the equivalent adult price.

. Under 12 prices reduced to £40 (£2 per game). A saving of over 80% on the concession gate

price.

The season ticket package is once again supplemented with a range of incentives and benefits

adding over £200 of savings to each season ticket book.

Following the success of last year's new season ticket budget facility, the facility to budget ahead

for next year (2011/12) has now also been incorporated into the package.

Chairman Stephen Thompson said, "Season ticket income is vital to the Club and our package is

designed to offer a range of prices to provide a structured income stream for the Club and

considerable savings to our regular supporters.

"Following last year's price freeze, we have had to increase prices slightly in most categories, but

this has allowed us to reduce the prices for all kids under 12 years old to the equivalent of just £2

per game. It is important for the future of Dundee United, and indeed football as a whole, that we

encourage these youngsters to attend games on a more regular basis and I'm sure that all Arabs

will support this move. I firmly believe that Dundee United offers its supporters some of the most

competitive and keenly priced season tickets in the SPL and I hope that even more will take

advantage of our offers to support the Terrors in what promises to be yet another exciting season

in 2010/11."

Brochures have been sent out to all those on the Dundee United database and there are four

ways to purchase or renew season tickets.

. In person at the Club Shop, Dundee United Direct, in Tannadice Street.

. By telephone from the ticket office on 01382 833166 (Options 1 & 3)

. By post, using the application form and pre paid envelope included in the season ticket

brochure.

. Online renewals, 24 hours per day, via the website

on http://www.dundeeunitedfc.co.uk/seasontickets.

Non season ticket holders who do not receive a brochure can collect one from the Club Shop, or

order one by telephone on 01382 833166 (Option 0) or by email

on boxoffice@dundeeunitedfc.co.uk

Gate prices are unchanged for next season.

Cup Final CD

Cup final fever hit St John's High School last week as the entire first team squad arrived to

record backing vocals for a new cup final version of 'Love is in the Air'.

Pupils from St John's had already re-recorded Michael Marra's "Hamish the Goalie" as part of

the school's community enterprise project to mark Dundee United's centenary season, and

decided to add the Arab anthem to celebrate the team reaching the Scottish Cup Final.

The players were in fine form as they entered into the spirit of things and certainly something

was in the air as the chorus was belted out, accompanied by lots of quite impressive air guitar

and dance routines!

'Hamish the Goalie' is sung by 6th year pupil Afioe McGuigan-O'Brien with instrumental backing

by pupils and staff and also input from songwriter Michael Marra.

The CD, which includes an interview with the legendary Hamish McAlpine, together with footage

of the recording sessions, goes on sale this Friday afternoon from the ticket office in the Club

Shop, the ArabZONE Kitroom, Groucho's and the Tangerine Trading Posts at Tannadice. The

cost is only £3.99, with all proceeds in aid of St John's community enterprise project and United

for Kids.

Prince Answers Centenary Appeal

The Invergowrie Parish Church Centenary Committee, set up to celebrate the building of the

church in 1909, has accomplished the many targets it set itself in April of last year.

Included in the projects was the establishment of a connection with the Nkronso congregation in

the Apedwa district of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana and £10,000 from the Centenary

Appeal Fund was allocated to this church to assist in a building programme.

With Dundee United FC also celebrating its centenary, it was thought appropriate that Ghanian

international Prince Buaben should be on hand to accept the cheque on behalf of his fellow-

countrymen.

Lorraine Kicks Off Switchover Countdown

Kicking off the countdown,

Dundee United fan Lorraine

Kelly and Jon Daly teamed

up with Digit Al, the

switchover mascot, for an

event today at Tannadice

Park. Jon, who sported a

new strip to mark the

milestone, took time out of

training ahead of the

Scottish Cup Final to help

spread the digital message.

Dundee will become

Scotland's first digital city as

part of the switchover.

Lorraine explained: "Most

sports fans have already

gone digital, but not all

viewers are prepared. With

only three months to go until

switchover, now is the time

to get ready."

Latest research* indicates

that most viewers in the

area are well prepared, with

nine out of ten households

already having made the

switch to digital TV. Those still watching in analogue are now being advised to get ready for

switchover - when Freeview coverage will be boosted to reach virtually all homes - or risk being

left with a blank screen.

Digital UK and the Switchover Help Scheme are stepping up their communications campaigns

across the area. Roadshows will launch across the north of Scotland and a detailed 20-page

guide to switchover is being sent to every household. The guide includes useful tips on retuning

Freeview equipment and how to choose the right regional service in areas where signals overlap.

On-screen captions on analogue channels will resume soon, backed by TV, press and radio

advertising.

The Help Scheme (helpscheme.co.uk) will be writing to eligible older and disabled people,

reminding them of the assistance on offer to convert one TV set to digital, including a choice of

equipment, installation and aftercare. The help is available for those aged 75 and over; or who

are eligible for certain disability benefits; or registered blind or partially sighted; or living in care

homes.

Paul Hughes, Digital UK National Manager for Scotland said: "Most people have already made

the switch to digital, but we know some people may leave it until the last minute, or may need a

little extra advice. We're urging anyone still watching analogue television to make the change

now and to contact the Help Scheme if they're eligible for practical support.

"Anyone who still needs advice on switching can visit the Digital UK website or call our advice

line. We'll also be holding roadshows and advice clinics at the time of switchover."

Viewers can check their switchover date and options for getting digital TV by using the Digital UK

postcode checker at digitaluk.co.uk or by ringing 08456 50 50 50.

Active Nation Initiative

Craig Conway and Scott Robertson, together with Dens Road Primary School pupils, showed

their support at the launch of NHS Tayside's Active Nation initiative by encouraging people to

include physical activity into their everyday lives.

Active Nation is an initiative which aims to motivate Scots to increase their physical activity by

taking at least half an hour of exercise, five times a week. Currently in Scotland only 39% of

adults, 63% of girls and 74% of boys are currently meeting these levels. In Tayside 22% of adults

are clinically obese and more than one in five children is overweight when they start primary

school. NHS Tayside, working with Dundee City Council, aims to engage with both children and

adults to show them that exercise can easily be incorporated into their daily lives to help reverse

the trend of poor health.

Mary Colvin, Health Promotions Programme Manager for NHS Tayside said, "Being active isn't

about running a marathon or turning into someone you're not. It is about adding enough activity

into your daily routine so that you feel the benefits. It doesn't have to be too serious or require

too much effort either. Being active should be fun and be easily incorporated into your day. That

is why it is really important to find activities that you enjoy and want to continue doing."

There are easy ways to fit activity into your day such as:

. Ditching short car trips and walking instead

. Taking the stairs instead of escalators or lifts

. Doing the garden or helping a neighbour by doing their garden

. Walking the dog, or even walking a neighbour's dog

. Vacuuming or doing the housework to your favourite music

. Playing football with your kids in the park

. Dancing around your living room

. Cycling with friends

Central to the Active Nation initiative is setting your own personal activity goal however large or

small. The Active Nation website - www.ouractivenation.co.uk - is an online resource where

people can register their goals, track their progress over time and find out about events in their

area.

Attending the launch of the initiative at Tannadice, Sandy Watson Chairman of NHS Tayside

Board said, "As a health promoting organisation, NHS Tayside aims to improve the health and

wellbeing of adults and children within the Tayside area. This is in line with the Health Equality

strategy which aims to improve the health and reduce health inequalities across Tayside.

"Active Nation is an important initiative to allow us to engage with and motivate people to make

small changes to incorporate activity into their day to day routine."

Sunday Preview

By Baktosch Gillan

Dundee United will bring the curtain

down on an excellent league

campaign with a home match

against Hibernian this Sunday -

knowing that third place in the SPL

is secure.

However, with squad places up for

grabs for the Active Nation Scottish

Cup Final against Ross County the

following Saturday, the players will

have plenty to play for, as they will

be keen to give Manager Peter

Houston a selection headache

ahead of the Hampden showpiece.

Having stopped a run of two

successive defeats to Old Firm

opposition with a 0-0 draw away to

Hearts, the Tangerines will be

looking to build on that result with a

confidence-boosting victory.

Hibs meanwhile, can still finish

fourth and after throwing away a 6-2

lead to draw 6-6 at Motherwell,

Hibees boss John Hughes will be

looking to end a poor run of results with a win at Tannadice as they aim to catch the Well and

guarantee a Europa League spot for next season.

Houstie will no doubt make some changes to starting line-up as some players will need game

time, but he will also want to avoid injuries to key men.

Steve Banks started in the midweek stalemate at Tynecastle, but Dusan Pernis could be in line

for a recall in the United goal.

Andy Webster was substituted at half-time at Hearts as a precaution so he may also return, but

Houstie will be wary of the influential defender's recent injury problems and may not take a

chance on his captain.

Morgaro "Jimmy" Gomis will serve the last of a two-game suspension, which could give Scott

Robertson a chance to gain some match-fitness before the cup final.

Up-front, Jon Daly and David Goodwillie started in midweek, but with Francisco Sandaza out for

the season and Danny Cadamarteri facing a race against time to be fit for the final, Houstie could

look to Damian Casalinuovo and Andis Shala to provide the firepower.

SPL Youth League

Dundee United 3 Kilmarnock 3

Still without the injured

Ross Smith, Gavin Stokes

and Jordan Elfverson,

Stevie Campbell's side

was further depleted with

Craig Hill and Ryan Dow

both on first team duty.

The match had an end of

season feel to it but there

were plenty of goals with

Stuart Armstrong giving

United a first half lead.

After the break, Killie

levelled and then went in

front before Dale Hilson

netted for United and a

late Michael Lee goal

gave the young

Tangerines what looked

like the winner. However,

the visitors went straight

upfield from the kick off to

level the match again.

The SPL Youth League

season is now complete

as far as United are

concerned and they can

look back on a good

campaign with just three

defeats in the league, all

at home whilst remaining

unbeaten on the road. The

youth side have recorded

nine wins but were

something of the draw

specialist of the campaign with ten matches ending even.

The biggest disappointment of the season was most likely the SFA Youth Cup quarter final exit

at home to Celtic but the progress made by the players in the last few months is evident. Four of

the youth side (Craig Hill, Ross Smith, Dale Hilson and Ryan Dow) have made competitive first

team debuts this season and they have all acquitted themselves admirably. Some players from

this youth squad will now move up or move on and others will replace them next season. Over

the coming weeks Stevie will give eNews readers his take on the season past and the next to

come.

that is something I recognise in

Dundee United. Crickey, I'll be

This Week in History

6th - 12th May.....

1963 - Goals from Dennis Gillespie, Eric Brodie and Walter Carlyle gave United an excellent 3-0

win over Celtic at Tannadice as United finished 7th in Division One, the club's highest ever

league position.

1973 - A United Select side took on a Dundee Select team at Tannadice in Dennis Gillespie's

testimonial match, with Bruce and Britton scoring for United in a 2-1 win.

1981 - In only the club's second ever Scottish Cup final, the match against Rangers at Hampden

was heading for a 0-0 draw when Rangers were awarded a penalty. Hamish McAlpine

dramatically saved Rangers midfielder Ian Redford's spot-kick and the tie went to a midweek

replay.

1987 - History was made as United became the first ever Scottish club to compete in the UEFA

Cup final. The first leg at the Ullevi Stadium in Sweden saw goalkeeper Billy Thomson receive a

nasty ear injury, but he played on as a tired United side lost 1-0 with the second leg to be played

at Tannadice.

1996 - In a tense first leg at Firhill, Christian Dailly scored the equaliser for United as they battled

it out with Partick Thistle in the play-off for the Premier League. The game ended 1-1 with the

second leg to play at Tannadice.

2001 - In the second last game of the season, things looked bleak as United went down 2-0 to St

Johnstone at McDiarmid Park and Charlie Miller missed a first half penalty. With relegation

contenders St Mirren winning at Love Street, United battled back with goals from Charlie Miller

and Craig Easton, and Derek Lilley completed a memorable comeback as United won 3-2 and St

Mirren went down.

This feature has been compiled by Bryan Orr and Scott Foran of the Federation of Dundee

United Supporters' Clubs, plus material from Rags to Riches by Mike Watson and the Dundee

United A - Z.
