Attorney General Eliot Spitzer
The State Capitol
Albany, NY 12224
Dear Attorney General Spitzer,
As I am sure you are well aware, Broadwater Energy, a joint venture of Shell and
Trans-Canada Corporation, has proposed the construction of a LNG Facility
approximately nine miles from Wading River.
While this project appears to offer the benefits of supplying New York City and
New England consumers with more than 75% of this energy source, it also appears to
present numerous issues including environmental, public health, safety and security
concerns. The Broadwater proposal is presently in the pre-filing review stage and
recently announced plans to submit an application to the Federal Energy Regulatory
Commission sometime between now and September 2005.
In light of this information, I respectfully request that you join with local and state
government officials in coming out against this project and take a proactive role in
stopping the ill-conceived plan. Since this project falls under the jurisdiction of the
Federal and State regulators, it is imperative that you step up to protect the 1.4 million
Suffolk County residents and voice a strong opposition to this project.
The time is now to ensure our voices are heard. We must work together to protect
our residents from the potential negative environmental impacts and the substantial
threats to public safety that this project imposes.
I look forward to hearing from you as you join me in saying NO to Broadwater.
Very truly yours,
Michael J Caracciolo
