Thank you for considering sponsoring the 2009 Michigan State ‘01’ Dart Tournament.
This yearly tournament will take place April 17-19 and will crown the state champions in
multiple events. We expect 150 participants over the course of the weekend. While
players will be traveling from around the state to attend, a large number will be from one
of the six major steel tip organizations here in the Metro Detroit area. This year we have a
number of exciting changes intended to grow the tournament.
For starters, this year we are very excited to be adding two youth events. These events
will be free to enter and trophies and other prizes will be awarded. We believe it is
important to both the sport of darts and the local community to provide the kids with
another organized avenue to build friendships and sportsmanship. All dart matches begin
and end in a handshake.
We also have a new venue this year: Airway Lanes on Highland Rd in Waterford. This is
a great move for the tournament in many ways. It is central to all the major dart
organizations on the eastern half of the state: Detroit, Lansing, Flint, Saginaw and Ann
Arbor. Airway has held numerous large scale bowling tournaments and has experience
running top-notch events. Finally, the facilities are top rate. Thirty wall mounted boards
are being installed for this tournament, bringing the total number of boards to nearly forty.
This is also the first year that the Wolverine Dart Association (WDA) and the North
Oakland Darting Association (NODA) have teamed up to present the tournament. By
forming this alliance, we benefit from the combined resources, dedication, energy and
creativity of the two leagues. The combined executive boards of the two leagues have
decades of experience.
Unfortunately, despite all the exciting changes the tournament is undergoing, we still need
to ask assistance from the local communities where these dart players live, work, shop,
and of course throw darts. This tournament is a “pay in/pay out” event; that is the event
payouts are determined by the entry fees paid. In addition to the payouts, we have
expenses such as plaques for the winners and finalists of the adult events, trophies for the
winners and finalists for the youth events, custom dart shirts for the men’s and woman’s
state champions, printing and advertising costs and other supplies.
To help offset these expenses, we are selling board sponsorships. These sponsorships will
provide another way for local businesses to reach out to the darters in their area. Most
people who play organized darts do so for many years. They are loyal to the sport and to
the local businesses that support them.

We believe this three-pronged approach will provide the best exposure your business. The
board sponsorship certificate will be displayed prominently near the assigned board. The
darters will see it every time they throw on that board. The printed program will provide a
mechanism for you to give more information about your business (maybe include a coupon
or map) in something the players will be bringing home. Finally, the websites will provide
a lasting presence as the advertisement will remain posted for one year. In addition, while
we expect approximately 150 darters for the tournament, there are many more darters in
the local leagues who frequent the websites and will see your advertisement over the
course of the year.
Of course we understand that times are tough right now for everyone. As a response, we
have lowered the event entry fees to $10. We expect that the lower fees will entice more
people to come out and participate in the tournament.
We also know that times are tough for local businesses like yours. Please remember, this
is a Michigan Only tournament and many of the participants are local to your area. In the
Metro Detroit area there are over 500 players in the participating in the six major steel tip
dart leagues. If you are unable to purchase a board sponsorship at this time, but would
still like to support the State ‘01’ tournament in a different way, please contact Bill Penn
