I’ve added layers and layers of skin to my hide after 24 years as a practicing chiropractor. I’ve learned to ignore the ignorant comments I overhear and rarely get into verbal altercations like I once did as a newer doctor. Mostly, I have developed this tolerance due to the fact that I know the truth. I was there in undergrad courses studying the exact same courses as the pre-med and pre-dental students. I was there in chiropractic college using the same texts as my medical school counterparts. I took the same rigorous board exams covering basic sciences that all health care students must take. I was there in chiropractic college being taught pathology my an MD, PhD pathologist, Biochemistry by a PhD http://spinaldecompression.wordpress.com/2010/06/17/chiropractic-vs-medical-competency/ Page 1 of 18 Chiropractic vs Medical Competency « Spinal Decompression for Back Pain 24/08/10 3:30 AM biochemist, Microbiology by an MD, PhD microbiologist and so on. I know that I actually spent more hours in the classroom than my medical counterparts and had practically no time off, while the medical students enjoyed spring breaks and summers off, I was in class. This is what makes chiropractic education shorter in years, but longer in hours. I quickly learned once in practice that my knowledge of musculoskeletal disorders dwarfed what medical physicians knew. I understood that my training had equipped me to be the pre-eminent authority on these types of problems on a par or exceeding the orthopedists I knew. My post-doctorate specialty training in orthopedics, whiplash and brain trauma vaulted me even higher in knowledge and practical application to help patients beyond what my medical contemporaries could muster. What I have forgotten over the last few years is that all my knowledge is fine and well, but there is an information war in the world. Those who woudl like to sell drugs, surgeries or other procedures are keen to get the word out on the internet and other media. They are well financed and well positioned. And like political candidates, it appears they are prone to smear the opposition rather than promote their own attributes. In the UK and in some states and provinces there are those who would oppose chiropractic for their own selfish economic gain in the guise of public safety, who are extolling the dangers of chiropractic and the incompetency of chiropractors. These words and images can be absorbed by the public and turn favorable public opinion that the chiropractic profession has worked so hard to gain. And the ugly specter of chiropractic bigotry has raised its head again, as a patient has recently informed me that his young medical doctor refused to look at x-rays taken in my office because he could not read them, “I can’t read chiropractic x-rays,” he told the patient, “and you wont find a medical radiologist who will either.” He then promptly ordered new “medical” x-rays, thus exposing the patient to further unwarranted radiation and cost. Mind you, the x-ray machine found in a chiropractors office is the same as in a medical facility. The film is the same. The results are the same. There’s no difference between a “chiropractic” x-ray and a “medical” x-ray. There are only x-rays. This would have been understandable from an elder MD, as they were trained in school, to be biased, but a younger MD should be more aware than this. He probably is and rather than believing what he was saying was merely spouting off his bigoted views on chiropractic’s inferiority to medicine. Absurd, but all too common. Therefore, I will from time to time alert the public to the truth, and share the truth of what I know to counteract the acts of these medical charlatans. Understand though that I am fully appreciative of the medical profession at large. I work with medical doctors and cross refer frequently. So please do not think I am painting with a broad brush. Here is an interesting article I found that highlights the difference in chiropractic vs medical competences in musculoskeltal matters. A series of articles reporting on the lack of medical training in musculoskeletal disorders was published between 1998 and 2002 by Kevin B. Freedman, MD [ 7 ], [ 8 ]. It seems that the department chairs of several hospital-based orthopedic residency http://spinaldecompression.wordpress.com/2010/06/17/chiropractic-vs-medical-competency/ Page 2 of 18 Chiropractic vs Medical Competency « Spinal Decompression for Back Pain 24/08/10 3:30 AM programs designed a basic examination on musculoskeletal competency and gave it to their residents. 82 per cent of medical school graduates failed the examination. Four years later the test was simplified and, once again, 78% of the examinees failed to demonstrate basic competency in musculoskeletal medicine. When this test was given to final quarter chiropractic students 70% of them passed the exact same exam! [ 9 ] The differences between these 2 student groups should be noted. The medical students had already graduated from medical school (as MDs) and had completed their rotations through various hospital departments. Finally, they had been accepted into an orthopedic residency program…the pinnacle of medical musculoskeletal specialists. The chiropractic students however were still just students. 80% medical failure versus 70% chiropractic success. Quite astonishing! Incidentally, I found this test and others like it just to satisfy my curiosity and was able to pass them, this after being out of school for 24 years. I often write these posts and comments late at night after serving my patients and spending time with my family. I do my best to convey useful information to people in pain. While I understand the need to proofread, I do not overly concern myself with it. The value of my blog is the fact that people from all over the world have access to a doctor who will help them with their problem and ask for nothing in return. I believe most of my readers are able to overlook the spelling and grammatical errors becasue they are grateful for the content. With that said, I appreciate your comment and will do my best to pay more attention in the future. The adjustments would only help me for a few days and then I was in pain again. The one thing I couldn’t do anymore was to get down on the floor and play with my young grandchildren, or to pick them up without having pain. I had almost given up hope that I would be able to do those things again. After treating with Dr. Marks with the DRX9000 machine and adjustments I am now able to play with my grandchildren on the floor and pick them up with no pain, which gives me so much joy! Thank you Dr. Marks for being the professional expert you are in understanding what treatment I needed to be able to have my life back again!” http://spinaldecompression.wordpress.com/2010/06/17/chiropractic-vs-medical-competency/ Page 9 of 18 Chiropractic vs Medical Competency « Spinal Decompression for Back Pain 24/08/10 3:30 AM Kathy Osborne, Real Estate Agent, Orange, CA “Can this pain-free bliss continue? Bearing five children left me with such sciatic nerve pain, I didn’t know how to function without pain. After my treatment, I have been pain free and enjoying every minute of it. Thank you, thank you, thank you!” Dee Mader, Self-Employed, Orange, CA “Lower back problems started about 3 years ago. I am a very active person competing in Masters Track and Field, golf, and going to the gym 4 days a week. I went to an orthopedic doctor who sent me to a physical therapist. Visited my chiropractor many times as well as acupuncture treatments. While it all helped (slightly), I still had to take Advil and other anti- inflammatories for minor relief. I didn’t want to give up my activities but was strongly considering it until I heard about the DRX 9000 treatment. After completing the program, I am about 75% better. I have started my activities (shot putt, golf) and have no pain in my legs. I’m a happy camper!” Henry Ross, Masters Athlete, Garden Grove, CA “Thank you so much for making my treatments on a daily basis so pleasant. I feel truly blessed to have met all of you. I could feel from the very beginning the good energy in your office. What a wonderful experience. I will gladly recommend you to all I come in contact with. Thanks again.” Connie Pinckard, Retired, Anaheim Hills, CA “Words cannot describe what the Orange Spine & Disc Rehabilitation Center has done for me. I am only 24 years old and was crying at least once a day because of my bulging/herniated discs. All my doctors did was suggest surgery and give me pain pills. After the treatments, I am living a pain-free normal life. I have a smile now instead of tears. I am so grateful that God lead me to Dr. Marks and his wonderful staff. Thank you all!” Michelle Wichlac, 24, Marketing Assistant I suffered with lower back pain for over thirty years. I visited chiropractors regularly and was told I had three herniated discs and arthritis. Several doctors wanted me to have back surgery, but I did not want to take the risk of making my situation even worst. My wife found an advertisement for Orange Spine Center and a new DRX9000 treatment. I was reluctant to believe it would really work, but I was at the point I would try most anything before irreversible surgery. I started the treatment, abided by the Dr. Mark’s instructions and within about six months I was 99% pain free. It is now has been a couple years and I have chosen to have a “maintenance” treatment every 6-7 weeks. I am basically pain free as long as I do not abuse by myself. I highly recommend this state of the art therapy to anyone with back pain. -David Atkinson, Plumbing Contractor, Long Beach, CA I have had lower back-leg-1 foot pain for years. I have tried pain pills, chiropractors, acupuncture, massages and many mattresses. Generally received little or no relief. I have no pain or tolerable pain that I can acupressure away 90+% of the time vs. pretty much constant pain before DRX-9000 treatments. I continue to have the DRX-9000 treatments about every 6wks. I'm back to hiking and doing household chores with little or no pain. Dr Marks and his Staff are great and caring people. Thanks to Dr. Marks and Staff -Debbie Jones, Self-Employed, Placentia, CA Two months ago, I couldn’t sit, stand, walk or even lie down because of severe pain in my right leg from a bulging disc. My condition had been deteriorating for about a year, my activities had become limited, and I was depressed. After trying pain relievers, physical therapy, and traditional chiropractic treatment, nothing worked. In fact, it hurt too much to even do the exercises that my doctor prescribed for my back pain. I wanted to avoid surgery, but I couldn’t imagine continuing to live with this kind of pain. Fortunately, I learned about spinal decompression therapy, and found Dr. Marks. From day one, I was impressed by the warmth and professionalism of Dr. Marks and his staff. They took my recovery personally, always going the extra mile to ensure that my concerns were addressed and that I was improving as much as possible. Initially, my recovery was slow, but after several weeks, the pain started to lessen, and today it’s over 95 % gone. After 25 treatments on the DRX-9000, I can now sit, stand, walk around, and get in and out of bed with almost no pain. I’ve even been able to golf, kayak, and go on bike rides with my wife again! I thank God for Dr. Marks and the DRX-9000. -Chris Easterly, 31, Screen Writer/Author/Educator, Azusa, CA I’ve been having lower back, left hip, and leg pain …I’ve tried 2 different chiropractors and my medical doctor with no results. I was told about the DRX9000 and went for a free exam and consultation and was told I would be a candidate for the DRX9000 so I went for it… I didn’t notice much improvement until the 9th treatment when my pain was much less and by the 10th treatment I have been pain free. I finished my 20th treatment… and look forward to the long term experience. - Earl White, Retired Machinist, Mission Viejo, CA I came to Dr. Marks after I found out about the DRX9000 on-line. I wanted to find someone local where I could try this. At the time my back pain was really bothering me. Everything I did I noticed the pain. I couldn’t do many things, like exercise, lift objects, or anything that active. I would question if I wanted to go to the mall with my wife because the walking would irritate my back pain. After going through the program at Dr. Marks’ office I am back to doing active physical activities and I don’t feel limited in any way except heavy lifting. I did overdo it once since I’ve gotten better and caused myself to feel slight sensations where my pain used to be. But luckily it’s very slight compared to what I once felt. http://spinaldecompression.wordpress.com/2010/06/17/chiropractic-vs-medical-competency/ Page 11 of 18 Chiropractic vs Medical Competency « Spinal Decompression for Back Pain 24/08/10 3:30 AM I appreciate the staff and Dr. Marks himself. Everyone has been very friendly and I actually look forward to my treatments. It’s very relaxing. I recommend this treatment and this office to anyone suffering from sciatica. - Rick Hon, Computer Software Tech, Covina, CA “This procedure was the best thing I could have done for myself and my back. It is safer, less expensive and less painful than if I had had surgery and I am so happy I went through with it. I truly feel it has changed my life and I am pain-free and enjoying every minute. Thank you! -Michelle Kane, 28, Insurance Adjuster, Anaheim, CA “I have lived with back pain for over 7 years as a result of a work-related injury…that resulted in 3 bulged discs, leg pains and severe back pain. Normal chiropractic adjustments only brought short term relief. After my first six week session with Dr. Marks and the DRX9000 I can honestly say that I am experiencing much more relief than I have ever felt. My pain has become almost non-existent and my range of motion in all directions is greatly improved. I am finding it much easier to get out of bed in the morning…my early morning stiffness has improved to almost non-existent. I would recommend this to anyone who feels that they have tried everything and think that they are always going to be in pain. This works! -Kevin Thornton, San Dimas, CA "I have suffered for 30 years with back pain from College Football and Military service related injuries. I have compressed discs at L3, L4, & L5. After completing the DRX 9000 regimen over the last few months, I have seen my pain level reduced by 80%. I would highly recommend Dr. Marks and the DRX9000 to anyone who suffers from low back pain." -Scott E. McDaniel, Real Estate Broker, Yorba Linda, CA “I had a broken back at the age of 16 and a ruptured disc at age 28. I’ve been in pain 24/7 since age 16; I’ve tried everything you can think of over the years. This is the only thing that’s even helped. I would say after 20 visits about 70% of the pain is gone. I never thought this would be possible. I would tell anyone to give this a chance!” -Myron Barker, Contractor, Irvine, CA “Thanks for your kindness and warm friendly smiles. I feel much better, thanks to the DRX9000.” -Don Tassin, Retired, Buena Park, CA “I have suffered with back pain for over 10 years. I have 2 bulged discs at L4, L5 & S1. After finishing the DRX program, about 70% of the pain is gone. That’s amazing! I had tried physical therapy, acupuncture & chiropractic before, but there was no help. I would recommend the DRX9000 to anyone who has back pain, especially Dr. Marks; he is such a caring person.” -Ann Tran, 36, Lab Tech, Anaheim, CA http://spinaldecompression.wordpress.com/2010/06/17/chiropractic-vs-medical-competency/ Page 12 of 18 Chiropractic vs Medical Competency « Spinal Decompression for Back Pain 24/08/10 3:30 AM “I’ve had back pain half my life. I’ve been through medication, chiropractic care and physical therapy in the past. The pain in my right leg got so bad the last 3 years that I had to give up my daily exercise walk. Since completing the DRX9000 treatments I am pain free and looking forward to getting back to my normal routine.” -Carol Patridge, 70, retired, Cypress, CA “I went to several doctors for my lower back and right leg problems. I had terrible pain all the way down my lower back and right leg. After all the treatments that I’ve had from professionals, surgeons, they sent me to get different pictures of my back. I went to see Dr. Marks, I wanted to go through his Disc Rehabilitation Center, but before I did, I prayed to my Lord, Jesus Christ, to help me…He did.” “I’ve gone through the DRX9000 program. I laid on the machine and listened to some great music. The Lord was good to me. Not only has Dr. Marks changed my life, but the office help is excellent. I have now started a new life. I do things that I didn’t know I could do. I thank the Lord for my doctor, Dr. Barry Marks, for what he has done in my life. It is all good. Thank you so much.” -Danny Rodriguez, Retired Civil Engineer, Westminster, CA “The DRX-9000 was my answer to many prayers! I struggled with lower back pain for many years. I felt at times unable to care for my daughter, and little things like sneezing used to cause tremendous pain. After only 5 weeks of treatment – I AM PAIN FREE! Thank you Dr. Barry and Christy and Anna – You are awesome! Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!” - Sandra Wickham, Stay-at-Home Mom, Anaheim, CA "I had a labor accident and by consequence I was diagnosed with a disc herniation in L5. The pain in my back and left leg was so intense that it made me stop walking along with my other normal activities. All of this affected my character making me very irritable. I went to get chiropractic care, but it did not work. They gave me anti-inflammatory and analgesics, as the days passed there was no proof of any improvement. The pain killers helped me just for a few hours and then the pain was in my lower back again. As none of those treatments seem to work, I talked to my doctor and he told me that the only solution was to have back surgery. I had an epidural injection and it only cleared the pain for a couple of days. Then I talked to a friend of mine who told me about the DRX 9000 machine. He had a problem with his back and he said that after some treatments he was pain free. I went to Dr. Marks clinic and after 3 treatments, I noticed that the pain went down. Now, I have finished my treatment and the pain in my lower back and leg is gone. I am doing my normal work and activities again. My experience with the DRX 9000 has been great, and that’s why I will recommend Dr. Marks and his treatments. Thanks Dr. Marks for your time and attention toward me, thanks for being such a nice person. - Mauricio Delgado, Anaheim, CA http://spinaldecompression.wordpress.com/2010/06/17/chiropractic-vs-medical-competency/ Page 13 of 18 Chiropractic vs Medical Competency « Spinal Decompression for Back Pain 24/08/10 3:30 AM More Dr. Barry L.
