Fear, misconceptions and tensions remain for all teens in Northern Ireland. Neighborhoods are still highly polarized and there is very limited opportunity for teens to meet with someone of the opposite faith to discuss concerns, fears and tolerance. Friendships between teens of opposing religions are very difficult to initiate and to maintain. Some facts still remain today in 2007:  92% of all public housing is segregated by religion  75% of all private housing is segregated by religion  89% of all marriages in Northern Ireland are same religion marriages  Only 5% of participants in the Ulster Project come from ―integrated schools‖  A girl was attacked and beaten at a bus stop in Belfast on 10/20/07 because she was wearing her school uniform from a Catholic school Key Components to Building a Shared Future by Transforming Relationships Between Teens  Confrontation – Acknowledging the presence of the other religion  Reflection – Understanding the complexity of the other religion  Storytelling – Listening to the stories of the other religion  Hospitality – Welcoming persons of the other religion  Intimacy – Simply ―being‖ with someone of the other religion There is still a great need to promote tolerance and respect for diversity in Northern Ireland. There is a great need to develop a sense of trust between teens of opposite religions in Belfast. The key to reconciliation is based on trust, equality and mutual respect. The Ulster Project promotes these concepts and helps to build a ―shared future‖ for teens in Northern Ireland. Host families and host teens contribute greatly to a sense of tolerance and peace in Northern Ireland. The Ulster Project is an opportunity for teens to develop trust, community and tolerance in a safe and non-threatening environment. The Ulster Project is a KEY to building a ―shared future‖ in Northern Ireland.
