A sands of online votes, South Lyon-

based pop/rock group Avienne

emerged as the winner of the fourth annual

Detroit News Battle of the Bands.

The group, which took first place by more

than 800 votes, has seven members, most of

whom attend South Lyon High School.

Avienne garnered 8,444 votes throughout the

five-week contest.

The other top vote-getters were hard-punk

group Seven Story Fall with 7,602 votes;

pop/punk trio Stolen Liberty with 6,504

votes; and thrash/metal band Sworn Rival

with 2,440 votes.

“(Avienne) had a great network of people

voting for them,” says Steve Tooman, father of

Avienne lead singer Mike Tooman. “They

would hand out flyers at local events. Four of

them were in ‘Annie’ at the end of last month,

and they passed out flyers there.” The proud

dad said two local papers also wrote articles
