Students should leave their 6th period class and report directly to the PE/Athletic locker rooms to get dressed for
practice. Students should be fully dressed (shorts, t-shirt, socks, athletic shoes, no jewelry, no artificial nails, hair in
ponytail) and report to the UGMS gym by 4:00 pm each day. Each student should have a ride waiting in the bus lane
at the time practice ends each day – PARENTS – please be on time. On Friday students will be able to leave as soon
as they are finished trying out. Practice and tryouts are closed to all spectators.
Requirements To Tryout:
1. Meet academic eligibility requirements: must have passed 5 out of 6 classes the previous semester (January
2. Pass a physical examination. A certified physician must complete the state-approved physical evaluation form
(Form is included in packet). Please indicate on the Application Form if you already have a current physical on file
at UGMS. For a physical to be considered current, it must have been done within the past year.
3. Athletic Information and Consent Form must be completely filled out and signed by parent/guardian (Form is
included in packet).

Form (in this order) by Wednesday, April 28th to Ms. Mothershed in T-7. Please staple or paper clip all
forms together – Do not fold them.
***One parent/guardian and student should attend the Tryout Information Meeting on Thursday, April 29th at 6:30
pm (meeting in UGMS Commons Area). Uniforms, contracts, practice and game schedules, expectations, etc. will
be discussed. Any questions you may have regarding tryouts or cheerleading can be asked at the meeting.
OTHER IMPORTANT INFORMATION:
On Monday and Tuesday students will learn tryout material. Wednesday is an optional practice day to
review tryout material with the help of instructors and to practice tumbling. Students should only practice
and demonstrate tumbling that they are able to perform without a spotter. Students will go through a mock
tryout on Thursday and will also be given their tryout number and order. On Friday students will tryout in
front of a panel of 2 or 3 judges and be judged on the following: jumps, cheer technique, dance technique,
showmanship/confidence, and tumbling skills. The top 16 scorers who wish to make the
Football/Competition squad will be placed on that squad. The next 16 highest scorers will be placed on the
Tryout Results: The names of students who make either squad will be posted on the UGMS website. The
webpage can be reached by going to the UGMS website, clicking on Athletics, and then clicking on the
Cheerleading pages. The names will be posted as soon as scores have been tallied, which generally takes an
hour after tryouts have ended. The names will NOT be posted at the school.
FOOTBALL/COMPETITION SQUAD: Only students with a standing back-handspring, round-off back-
handspring, and toe-touch back-handspring will be eligible for making the Football/Competition squad.
Upcoming 7th and 8th graders can make the Football/Competition squad. Students making the
Football/Competition squad will not be allowed to participate in other school athletic activities (other than
Track/Field and Volleyball) due to practice and competition schedules. The season will officially begin in
August and finish in November. There will be weekly morning practice (most likely two days a week) during
the Summer Break, in which squad members are required to attend unless a scheduled vacation prevents
them from doing so. The first summer practice is scheduled for Thursday, June 3rd from 9 am – 12 noon.
A mandatory Choreography Camp is scheduled for the week of June 7th – 11th (please plan vacations
accordingly). Squad members will learn the competition routine during this week. The
Football/Competition squad will compete in 4 or 5 GHSA competitions. The squad will also cheer at 7th and
8th grade football games (Home games only) with the Football/Basketball cheerleading squad. The football
game schedule is TBA. Competition dates will be announced in May or June. Full dedication and
commitment is required. Please do not consider trying out for the Football/Competition squad if you are on
an All-star cheerleading team that presents any scheduling conflicts. Estimated cost to participate: $600 -
$700. Cost includes full uniform, hair ribbon, briefs, shoes, warm-up, athletic bag, practice clothes, and
choreography camp. Please read the attached SAMPLE CONTRACT to get an idea of policies and
procedures for the Football/Competition Squad.
FOOTBALL/BASKETBALL CHEERLEADING SQUAD: Any upcoming 7 or 8 grader is eligible for th th
making the Football/Basketball cheerleading squad. There is no tumbling skill requirement for making this
squad. Students making the Football/Basketball squad are not allowed to participate in any other school
athletic activities that occur from August through early February due to practice and game schedules. The
season will officially begin in August and finish in early February. The Football/Basketball squad will cheer at
all 7th and 8th grade HOME football games. The football game schedule is TBA. The Football/Basketball
squad will also cheer at HOME basketball games (both boys and girls, both 7th and 8th grade teams). The
basketball game schedule is TBA. Full dedication and commitment is required – all squad members are
expected to attend all regular season practices and games. Estimated season cost: $600 - $700. Cost includes
full uniform, hair ribbon, socks, briefs, shoes, warm-up, athletic bag, and practice clothes.
Parents/students will have an opportunity to ask questions at the Tryout Information Meeting on April 29th.
If your question(s) needs to be answered prior to the meeting, then please e-mail Coach Mothershed or
Tuesday, May 11th – All cheerleaders must attend uniform and practice clothes sizing. The sizing will begin
directly after school and last no later than 6:00 pm.
Cheerleaders making a team will be required to pay $100.00 on Tuesday, May 11th (at the uniform sizing).
Details will be discussed at the Tryout Information Meeting.

must abide by the rules and regulations set forth by the coach, athletic director, and principal of UGMS.
PLEASE READ THE SAMPLE CHEER CONTRACT FOR RULES/REGULATIONS. We understand that
all forms included in this packet must be completed and turned in by April 28th and failing to do so may result in
not being able to tryout. We understand that all students will be evaluated by qualified judges and agree to abide
by the decision of the judges regarding which students make a cheerleading squad. We understand by the very
nature of the activity that cheerleading and gymnastics carry a risk of physical injury. No matter how careful the
participant and coach are, how many spotters are used, or what landing surface is used, the risk cannot be
eliminated. The risk of injury includes minor to catastrophic injuries such as permanent paralysis or even death
from landing or falls on the back, neck, or head. We understand these risks and will not hold Union Grove
Middle School or any of its personnel/coaches responsible in the case of accident or injury at any time and
during any event.
