Explanatory notes
This unit standard can be used to award credit for the achievement of learning outcomes
consistent with the New Zealand Association of Science Educators (NZASE) Certificate in
Science Syllabus, and is based on objectives from levels 4 and 5 of - Ministry of
Education, Science in the New Zealand Curriculum (Wellington: Learning Media, 1993).

Outcome 1
Describe characteristics of living things.
Evidence requirements
1.1 The description identifies life processes carried out by living things.
Range four of - growth, respiration, feeding, reproduction, sensitivity,
movement, excretion.
1.2 The description identifies units of living things.
Range three of - cells, tissues, organs, organ systems, organisms.
Outcome 2
Describe the function of key organs.
Range any four of - brain, heart, lungs, stomach, intestines, kidneys, liver, skin.
Evidence requirements
2.1 The description identifies organs.
