HEART (see page 65 of Health Care Provider CPR)
Approximately 100,000 Beats Per Day

HEART: Composed of muscle (myocardium) organ with 4 chambers

RIGHT SIDE OF HEART (Atrium & Ventricle): receives venous blood from the
body and sends it to the lungs to be oxygenated.

LEFT SIDE OF HEART(Atrium & Ventricle): receives oxygenated blood from
the lungs and sends it to the body.

UPPER CHAMBERS OF THE HEART (Right & Left Atriums) – Receiving
chambers

LOWER CHAMBERS OF THE HEART (Right & Left Ventricles) – Pumping
chambers

    Right Atrium
o Receives blood from body via Vena Cava
o Electrical impulses that stimulate heartbeat originate in
“SinoAtrial (SA) Node” (a special collection of “pacemaker” cells)
o Impulse travels to the “Atrioventricular (AV) Node” where they
branch out via “Parkinje fibers” causing the muscular walls of the
ventricles to contract. This ventricular contraction forces blood to
surge from the heart throughout the body, resulting in the
          characteristic “pulse”.
       o
    RIGHT VENTRICLE
o Receives blood form the Right Atrium through a 1-way valve
o Pumps blood to the lungs through the Pulmonary Artery

    LEFT ATRIUM
o Receives oxygenated blood from the lungs through the Pulmonary
         Vein
o Pumps blood to the Left Ventricle through 1-way valve

    LEFT VENTRICLE
o Pumps blood into the body through the aorta
